Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Does your BVN carry your credit history?

Your BVN is an identity number, not a score. Credit bureaus hold your history and use identifiers like the BVN to match it. What that means for you.

The short answer

No. The Bank Verification Number is an identity record operated for the banking industry; NIBSS describes it as giving account holders a unique identity that can be verified across Nigerian banks, and it says nothing about storing loans. Your credit history sits with licensed credit bureaus, which receive loan data from lenders and use identifiers such as your BVN to match those records to you.

What the BVN is

The Bank Verification Number is an identity number issued when you enrol your biometrics with a bank. According to NIBSS, the project was launched on 14 February 2014 by the Central Bank of Nigeria with the Bankers' Committee, and it gives bank account owners "a unique identity that can be verified across the Nigerian banking industry". Its job is to tie every account you hold, at every bank, to one verified person.

The BVN record holds your identity and enrolment details. It is not a ledger of what you borrowed or repaid, and no credit score is attached to it.

Where your credit history lives

Credit history in Nigeria is held by credit bureaus licensed by the CBN under the Credit Reporting Act 2017. The bureaus most Nigerians deal with are CRC Credit Bureau, FirstCentral Credit Bureau and CreditRegistry. Each keeps its own database built from what lenders and other credit information providers submit.

The Act also mentions the CBN's Credit Reporting Management System (CRMS) as a provider of data to bureaus; CRC's FAQ says CRMS data is submitted to CRC and reflected in its reports.

Your right of accessThrough your bankOne free report a year from each bureau under section 9(6)(a)

When a lender reports a facility, it sends your identifying details with it. Bureaus use those details, the BVN among them, to attach the facility to the right person. This is why the common belief that "my BVN has been blacklisted" has some truth in practice: the BVN is the thread that lets a bank in Kano find the default you left with an app in Lagos. The number itself is not marked; the bureau's file that is matched to it holds the history.

A few consequences follow:

  • Opening a new bank account does not give you a clean slate. The new account carries the same BVN.
  • A mismatch can split or merge files. If a lender submitted a wrong date of birth or misspelt name, your history may be split across two files, or a stranger's loan may land on yours. Both are errors you can dispute.
  • Each bureau may hold different data. A lender may report to one bureau and not another, so check more than one.

Why every lender asks for your BVN

Loan apps, banks and even some employers ask for your BVN at the start. For lenders there are two reasons. The first is identity: confirming that the person applying is a real, verified bank customer. The second is the credit check: section 12(f) of the Credit Reporting Act 2017 requires most lenders to obtain a report from at least one bureau before granting credit, and the BVN helps the bureau return the right file.

Giving your BVN to a lender you have chosen is normal. What you should not give is your PIN, password or one-time code. Check that a loan app is registered with the FCCPC before you hand over any identity data; see how to check a loan app. The Act also says consent to pull your report is valid only for the specific transaction it was given for, so a lender should not keep re-checking you on the strength of one application.

What the BVN does not do

  • It does not store a credit score.
  • It does not stop you opening accounts because of a default; lenders decide on credit, not the BVN system.
  • It does not let a lender see your history without a bureau check. Under section 12 of the Act, a lender pulls a report from a bureau with your consent.
  • It does not move debts from one person to another. A guarantee or a joint loan is a contract; see being a guarantor.

Steps: check what is linked to you

  1. Request your free annual report from CRC, FirstCentral and CreditRegistry. See the free report rule.
  2. Check the personal details section first: name spellings, date of birth, phone numbers and addresses. These drive the matching.
  3. Check every facility. Anything you do not recognise may be identity misuse; follow the steps for a loan you never took.
  4. Dispute any error in writing within 15 working days of receiving the report, as section 9(6)(b) requires.

Where Pryme fits

Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, the lender, uses credit bureaus and are integrated with all licensed credit bureaus in Nigeria, so a Loan on Spaces you take and repay becomes part of your bureau history. Account security uses an authenticator app and a transaction PIN; see how Pryme protects your account and Loans on Spaces.

Questions people ask

Can my BVN be blacklisted for an unpaid loan?

The BVN number is not marked. A lender can report the unpaid loan to credit bureaus, which link it to you using identifiers such as your BVN, so other lenders checking a bureau will see it.

Can I check my credit history with my BVN?

Bureaus use your BVN to find your file. You request the report from the bureau itself, for example through CRC's or FirstCentral's website, and you are entitled to one free report a year from each.

Will a new bank account clear my credit record?

No. The new account uses the same BVN, and your bureau files stay as they are.

Does my BVN show my credit score?

No. The BVN is an identity record. A score, where one exists, is produced by a credit bureau from your report.
