Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

Which expenses can a freelancer deduct in Ghana?

Ghana lets the self-employed deduct costs incurred wholly, exclusively and necessarily to earn income. What counts, what does not, with an example.

The short answer

A freelancer in Ghana can deduct business outgoings incurred "wholly, exclusively and necessarily" in producing taxable income: rent on premises used for the work, interest on business borrowing, repairs on business assets (capped at 5% of the pool's written-down value), research and development costs and capital allowances. Private and domestic spending is not deductible, and there is no standard deduction, according to PwC's Ghana summary last reviewed in March 2026.

The test every expense has to pass

Ghana taxes a self-employed person on profit, not on everything that lands in the account. The rule that decides what comes off before tax is short. PwC's Ghana tax summary, last reviewed on 11 March 2026, says that for individuals other than employees, outgoings and expenses are deductible if they are incurred "wholly, exclusively, and necessarily in the production of the income" that is being taxed.

Each of the three words does work. "Wholly" means the full cost relates to the business. "Exclusively" means it was not also for a private purpose. "Necessarily" means the cost was needed to earn the income, not simply convenient. A laptop used only for client work in Accra passes easily; a family holiday that included one client lunch does not.

Two further points from the same summary matter for planning. Expenses of a private or domestic nature are generally not deductible, and Ghana allows no standard deduction. There is no flat allowance you can claim in place of records, so what you can prove is what you can deduct.

Costs the law names as deductible

PwC lists the categories that the Income Tax Act treats as deductible for a business. For a typical Nigerian designer, developer, writer or consultant working from Ghana, they translate like this:

Category in the lawWhat it can cover for a freelancerCondition or limit
Rent on land or buildingsA studio, co-working desk or office used to earn the incomeMust be occupied to earn the income
InterestInterest on a loan used to buy equipment or fund the businessMoney borrowed must be used for income-producing assets or purposes
Repairs and maintenanceFixing a business laptop, camera or vehicleCapped at 5% of the written-down value of the asset pool at year end
Research and developmentTesting, prototyping or developing a productDeductible whether or not capital in nature
Capital allowancesSpreading the cost of equipment over timeRates and pools set by the Act; not on the page we read
Trading stock allowanceMainly for those who sell goodsCalculated in a specified manner

Everyday running costs that pass the "wholly, exclusively and necessarily" test, such as software subscriptions, internet for client work, professional fees to an accountant or a lawyer, and business travel to a client, are deductible under the general rule even though they are not named in the list. Where a cost is partly private, such as a phone line you also use for family calls, keep a sensible business share and the reasoning behind it, and be ready to explain it.

Personal reliefs are separate

Ghana also gives personal reliefs that reduce the income charged to tax. The annual figures PwC lists include relief for a dependent spouse or at least two dependent children (GHS 1,200), for each dependent child's education (GHS 600, up to three), for aged dependants (GHS 1,000 each, up to two) and for professional, technical or vocational training costs (up to GHS 2,000). Social security contributions, qualifying insurance premiums and donations are the only non-business expenses that are deductible. These reliefs depend on residence and eligibility, so confirm them with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) before you rely on them.

What does not come off

  • Private and domestic spending: groceries, your own rent at home, school fees, clothes you wear every day.
  • Tax itself: income tax you pay is not an expense against the same income.
  • Money sent to family in Nigeria: support for relatives is a private outgoing, however regular.
  • The full price of equipment in one go: equipment you keep for years is dealt with through capital allowances rather than as a one-off expense.
  • Costs you cannot evidence: without an invoice, receipt or bank record the cost is hard to defend.

A worked example in cedis

This is an example only, using the resident rates PwC lists for 2026 (0% on the first GHS 5,880, then 5%, 10%, 17.5% and 25% on the next bands). It assumes a resident freelancer under the ordinary rules, not the Modified Taxation Scheme.

Without the expenseWith a GHS 10,000 co-working and software expense
Taxable profitGHS 60,000GHS 50,000
0% on first 5,88000
5% on next 1,3206666
10% on next 1,560156156
17.5% on next 38,0006,6506,650
25% on the rest3,310 (on 13,240)810 (on 3,240)
TaxGHS 10,182GHS 7,682

The GHS 10,000 expense saves GHS 2,500 of tax because every cedi of it would otherwise have been taxed at 25%. That is the practical value of a deduction: it is worth your top rate, not the whole amount.

Records that make deductions stick

  1. Keep every supplier invoice and receipt, in the name you trade under.
  2. Pay business costs from one account so the bank record matches the claim.
  3. Note the business reason on anything that could look private (a taxi, a meal, a flight to Lagos).
  4. Keep an asset list with purchase dates and costs for capital allowances.
  5. File your return on time: PwC says individual returns are due within four months after the end of the basis period, which for a calendar year means by the end of April.

If you also earn from Nigerian clients, see how a self-employed person is taxed in Ghana and how Nigerian withholding tax on your invoices interacts with it.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account keeps naira, dollar, pound and euro income and costs in one place, with each transaction recorded, which makes a year-end expense schedule easier to build. The Finance agent can prepare a categorised list of spending for you to review, and you can generate a verifiable statement through VerifyDoc.ai if an accountant or the GRA asks for evidence.

Questions people ask

Can I deduct my laptop as a freelancer in Ghana?

Yes, but through capital allowances spread over time rather than as a single expense, provided it is used to earn the income. Repairs to it are deductible within the 5% cap.

Is my home rent deductible if I work from home in Accra?

Rent is deductible for premises occupied to earn the income. Your own home is mainly private, so only a business share you can justify is defensible, and the GRA may question it.

Does Ghana have a standard deduction for the self-employed?

No. PwC's 2026 summary says no standard deductions are allowed, so you deduct actual business costs you can evidence.

Can I deduct money I send to my parents in Nigeria?

No. Support for family is a private outgoing. Only social security contributions, qualifying insurance premiums and donations are deductible among non-business expenses.
