2018OjirehPrime Card

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

How do freelancers in Ghana pay income tax to GRA?

Registering with GRA, provisional tax through the year, the four-month return deadline, VAT for service providers and keeping cedi records.

The short answer

A freelancer taxable in Ghana registers with the Ghana Revenue Authority, pays any provisional tax GRA sets through the year, and files a return within four months after the end of the basis period, which for the calendar year means by 30 April. Since 1 January 2026, Ghana's VAT Act 2025 also requires service providers to register for VAT whatever their turnover, so check that too.

Are you taxable in Ghana?

Whether Ghana taxes your freelance income depends first on whether you are resident in Ghana for tax purposes, under Ghana's Income Tax Act. If you live and work in Accra for most of the year, you should expect to be. Our guide to tax residence in Ghana sets out the test. This page covers what happens once you are in the system. It is information, not tax advice; for your own position, speak to GRA or a Ghanaian tax practitioner.

Step 1: register with GRA

You need a taxpayer identification with GRA before you can file or pay. For non-citizens living in Ghana this is linked to the Ghana Card; our guide on the Ghana Card PIN as your TIN covers how that works for foreigners, and registering as a freelancer with GRA walks through the registration.

Step 2: the tax year and the return

Tax year
The calendar year; PwC's summary of Ghana's rules says a tax year other than the calendar year is not permitted.
Return deadline
Within four months after the end of your basis period. For the calendar year, that is by 30 April of the next year.
What the return does
Works out your actual tax for the year, after the instalments you have already paid.

Step 3: provisional tax during the year

Ghana collects income tax through the year rather than all at the end. PwC's summary of Ghana's tax administration describes provisional tax as payable in four equal instalments at the end of each quarter (March, June, September and December), and says these payments are not the final liability. That description sits in PwC's corporate section, and the individual section we read does not repeat it, so confirm with GRA how instalments apply to you as a self-employed person and check the notice or schedule it gives you for your own amounts and dates.

The same PwC page says that where tax is not paid by the due date, a penalty is calculated at 125% of the statutory rate, compounded monthly on the amount outstanding. Paying instalments on time is cheaper than catching up.

Worked example

Quarter endInstalment
31 MarchGH¢3,000
30 JuneGH¢3,000
30 SeptemberGH¢3,000
31 DecemberGH¢3,000
Paid in the yearGH¢12,000

If your final return by 30 April shows tax of GH¢13,500, you pay the GH¢1,500 balance. If it shows GH¢11,000, you have overpaid by GH¢1,000 and should ask GRA how it will be credited or refunded.

VAT: the 2026 change that catches freelancers

Ghana's Value Added Tax Act, 2025 (Act 1151) took effect on 1 January 2026, replacing the 2013 Act. According to EY's summary, the registration threshold of GH¢750,000 applies to suppliers of goods, while for services 'there is no revenue threshold', and registration is due within 30 days of starting the taxable activity. Crowe Ghana puts it as: 'All service providers are required to register for VAT, irrespective of turnover.' Crowe also reports a penalty for failing to register of three times the VAT payable from the date registration was required.

The standard VAT rate is 15%, with NHIL and GETFund levies at 2.5% each, and the COVID-19 levy was abolished. Whether your work for clients abroad is taxable or zero-rated is a separate question, covered in do I charge Ghana VAT to a client in Nigeria.

Records to keep

  • Every invoice, with the date, client, currency and amount
  • The cedi value of each foreign-currency or naira receipt, and the rate you used
  • Bank and mobile money statements showing what was received
  • Receipts for business costs such as data, equipment and workspace
  • Copies of GRA instalment payments and returns
  • Any Nigerian withholding tax receipts from clients

Income paid in naira or dollars still has to be reported in cedis. Pick a consistent rate method, note it, and use it all year.

Where Pryme fits

If Nigerian clients pay you, a Pryme Business Account keeps naira and dollar receipts in their own currencies with statements for each, which helps when you prepare cedi records. Its Finance agent can prepare reminders for instalment dates; nothing is filed or paid without your approval.

Do self-employed people in Ghana pay tax quarterly?

PwC describes provisional tax as four equal quarterly instalments. Confirm with GRA how the schedule applies to you.

Do freelancers in Ghana need to register for VAT?

Since 1 January 2026, reports of the VAT Act 2025 say service providers must register whatever their turnover. Check with GRA how this applies to you.

What is the penalty for paying Ghana tax late?

PwC's summary describes a penalty at 125% of the statutory rate, compounded monthly, on tax unpaid after the due date.
