Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

How can a Ghana freelancer save for retirement?

Ghana's three tiers explained for a self-employed Nigerian: SSNIT's first tier, the voluntary third tier, and keeping a Nigerian RSA going.

The short answer

A self-employed Nigerian in Ghana has three broad options: ask SSNIT whether you can join its basic scheme as a self-employed contributor, pay into a voluntary third-tier (Tier 3) provident fund or personal pension, or keep contributing to a Nigerian Retirement Savings Account. SSNIT describes Tier 3 as voluntary and fully funded by members, while its basic pension needs at least 180 months of contributions.

Employees in Ghana have pension contributions deducted for them. Freelancers do not, so unless you act, nothing is saved. For a Nigerian living and working for yourself in Ghana, there is a second question: whether to build retirement savings in Ghana, in Nigeria or both. This guide sets out how Ghana's system is structured, according to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), what we could and could not confirm about self-employed and foreign members, and how a Nigerian pension account can carry on. It is information, not financial advice.

Ghana's three tiers

SSNIT's explainer of the three-tier scheme (published December 2015) describes the structure this way:

TierWhat it isWho runs it
First tierBasic national social security scheme paying a monthly pensionSSNIT
Second tierOccupational scheme paying a lump sumPrivately managed second-tier fund managers
Third tierVoluntary, fully funded by members: provident funds and personal pension schemesPrivate providers

For employees, SSNIT's page gives mandatory contributions of 18.5% of pay, split 13.5% to the first tier and 5% to the second tier. It says the minimum contribution period for a first-tier pension is 180 months (15 years) and the entry age for new members is 15 to 45. These figures date from 2015; check SSNIT for any later change.

Can a self-employed Nigerian join SSNIT?

SSNIT's explainer covers public and private sector workers. It does not say how self-employed people register or what they pay, and it says nothing about non-Ghanaians. Before you plan around the first tier, ask SSNIT three questions: whether a self-employed foreign national can register voluntarily, what contribution rate and minimum apply, and what happens to contributions if you leave Ghana before reaching 180 months. The last point matters most. If you might return to Nigeria in ten years, a scheme that needs 15 years of contributions for a pension may not suit you.

The third tier: voluntary pensions and provident funds

Tier 3 is the part of the system built for voluntary saving. SSNIT's page describes it as voluntary and fully funded by members, delivered through provident funds and personal pension schemes managed privately. In practice you choose a provider, decide how much to pay and how often, and your money is invested for you. Before choosing, ask each provider:

  • Whether it is licensed by the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), and check the answer with the NPRA
  • Whether non-Ghanaians can open an account and what ID is needed (a Ghana Card or passport and permit)
  • The fees, shown as a percentage a year and any fixed charges
  • When you can withdraw, and what happens if you leave Ghana
  • Whether contributions can be paid monthly by mobile money or bank transfer
  • How often you receive statements

Tax treatment of Tier 3 contributions for the self-employed is a question for the Ghana Revenue Authority or a tax adviser; we did not confirm it. See tax for self-employed freelancers in Ghana.

Keeping a Nigerian pension going

If you worked in Nigeria, you probably have a Retirement Savings Account (RSA) with a Pension Fund Administrator. FCMB Pensions' note on cross-border arrangements, written for Nigerians working abroad, describes one model: contributions in foreign currency are sent through a bank into the PFA's custodian domiciliary account, converted to naira at the official rate on receipt and credited to the RSA, with the contributor bearing any exchange shortfall or charges. It lists supporting documents including evidence of employment, a pay advice, your passport data page and your host country work permit. The note dates from an earlier version of the pension law, so ask your own PFA for its current process. For more, see your Nigerian RSA while living in Ghana and contributing to micro pension from Ghana.

Putting a plan together: example

Example only. You earn GHS 8,000 a month on average and decide to save 10% for retirement. You could split GHS 800 as GHS 500 into a Tier 3 personal pension in Ghana and the cedi equivalent of GHS 300 into your Nigerian RSA or other naira savings. Over a year that is GHS 6,000 in Ghana and GHS 3,600 sent to Nigeria, before any returns or charges. The split is a choice about where you expect to retire and which currency you will spend in, not a rule.

  1. Decide where you are likely to retire.
  2. Ask SSNIT about voluntary self-employed membership and the 180-month rule.
  3. Compare at least two Tier 3 providers on fees and withdrawal terms.
  4. Ask your PFA how to keep contributing from Ghana.
  5. Set a fixed monthly amount and automate it.

Where Pryme fits

If part of your plan is saving in naira at home, Pryme's Savings Boxes are for naira held in Nigeria, and you can move cedi earnings home through Send with the rate and the fee shown before you approve. A Personal Assistant can prepare a monthly reminder to make your contributions (Personal Assistant).

Questions people ask

Can a foreigner contribute to SSNIT as self-employed?

SSNIT's three-tier explainer does not cover self-employed or foreign members. Ask SSNIT directly whether you can register voluntarily and at what rate.

What is Tier 3 pension in Ghana?

SSNIT describes it as the voluntary, fully funded third tier, made up of provident funds and personal pension schemes run by private providers.

How many years must I contribute to get a SSNIT pension?

SSNIT's page gives a minimum of 180 months, which is 15 years.

Can I keep paying into my Nigerian RSA from Ghana?

Some PFAs accept foreign-currency contributions converted to naira. FCMB Pensions describes one process; ask your own PFA for its rules.
