Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Credit card annual fees: when a newcomer should pay one

When an annual-fee card makes sense on a thin US credit file, the federal cap on first-year fees, and how a fee can push up your utilisation.

The short answer

For most newcomers with a thin US credit file, an annual fee is worth paying only when it is the only reasonable card you can get, or when the rewards you will actually use clearly exceed it. Federal rules cap the fees you are required to pay in a card's first year at 25% of the starting credit limit, but even a capped fee eats into a small limit and raises your utilisation.

A first US credit card is a tool for building a record, not a source of rewards. That changes how you judge an annual fee. On a $300 limit, a fee is a large share of the card; on a $10,000 limit it is a small one. This guide sets out the rules and a way to decide.

What the law says about fees on new cards

Regulation Z, the federal rule on card credit, limits fees in the first year. Under 12 CFR 1026.52(a), the total fees you are required to pay during the first year after the account opens "must not exceed 25 percent of the credit limit" in effect when it opens. Late payment fees, over-the-limit fees and returned-payment fees are excluded from that cap, and so are fees you choose to incur.

The account counts as opened on the first day you can use it, if that is later than the official opening date. Issuers must also consider your ability to make the minimum payments before opening the account, using your income or assets and current obligations (12 CFR 1026.51).

Worked example of the cap

Example only: a secured card with a $200 limit can charge you no more than $50 in required fees during the first year (25% of $200). A $400 limit allows up to $100. The cap tells you the most you could be charged, not that the fee is good value.

The hidden cost: utilisation

Annual fees are usually billed to the card. The CFPB advises keeping balances to no more than 30% of your limit. Example only: a $75 fee on a $300 limit is 25% utilisation before you buy anything; add $50 of groceries and you are over 40%. On a small limit, a fee can make it harder to show the low-use pattern that helps a new file; see credit utilisation on a $500 limit.

When paying a fee can make sense

  • It is the only card you can get. If you have been declined for no-fee secured cards and a card from a mainstream issuer charges a small fee, a year of on-time payments may be worth it. Check first; the CFPB notes that secured cards set the line with a deposit, often about $50 to $300, and many have no annual fee.
  • The rewards you will actually use exceed the fee. Example only: a card charging $95 that pays 2% more on $600 a month of groceries returns $144 a year (2% × $7,200), so it covers the fee. If you spend $200 a month in that category, it returns $48 and loses money.
  • Travel benefits you will use. If you fly to Nigeria every year, check whether checked-bag, lounge or travel insurance benefits are on your route and whether the card charges a foreign transaction fee.
  • The card graduates. Some secured cards move you to an unsecured card and return your deposit; the CFPB lists this as something to ask about.

Trips home and foreign transaction fees

Many newcomers judge a card by how it behaves in Nigeria. Some cards, with or without an annual fee, add a foreign transaction fee to purchases made abroad or in another currency. Check the pricing table for that line before assuming a travel card is worth its fee, and check whether the benefits you want apply on flights to Lagos or Abuja. Card acceptance in Nigeria is uneven, so a fee paid for travel perks may buy less than it would on other routes; see using a US card in Nigeria.

When it usually does not

  • You are building a file from nothing and a no-fee secured card or credit-builder loan is available.
  • You expect to carry a balance. Interest will usually cost more than any reward, and the fee adds to it.
  • The fee is charged monthly rather than yearly, which can be harder to spot. Add twelve months together.
  • The rewards depend on spending you would not otherwise do.

What to check first

  1. Find the annual fee and any monthly fee in the pricing table before you apply.
  2. Work out the first-year cap: 25% of the limit you are given.
  3. Ask whether the issuer reports to all three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion).
  4. Ask whether the fee is waived for the first year and what it will be in year two.
  5. Plan to review the card after 12 months: downgrade to a no-fee version if one exists, rather than closing your oldest account.

For which cards newcomers tend to start with, see secured cards for new immigrants, and for what changes after half a year, a credit card after six months.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is not a card issuer in the US. If part of your spending is in naira for family at home, a Pryme Personal Account holds USD and NGN with local details for each; see multicurrency. Any fee is shown in the app before you approve.

Questions people ask

Is an annual fee credit card bad for a new credit file?

Not by itself; the fee does not appear in your score. It matters because it is billed to the card and uses up part of a small limit, and because the money may be better spent elsewhere.

How much can a card charge in fees in the first year?

Under 12 CFR 1026.52(a), required fees in the first year cannot exceed 25% of the opening credit limit, excluding late, over-limit and returned-payment fees.

Should I close a card with an annual fee after a year?

Ask the issuer for a no-fee version first. Closing your oldest card can shorten your history and reduce your total available credit.

Do secured cards have annual fees?

Some do and many do not. Compare the pricing tables; the CFPB suggests asking whether the card reports to the bureaus and whether it graduates to an unsecured card.
