Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Converting pounds to dollars before a trip to Nigeria

Carrying dollars to Nigeria means converting twice. When it still makes sense, what it costs, and the cash declaration limits on both sides.

The short answer

Buying dollars in the UK to change into naira in Nigeria means paying a conversion margin twice, once from pounds to dollars and again from dollars to naira. It mainly makes sense for costs actually priced in dollars or as an emergency reserve. For everyday spending, a UK card with low foreign fees or naira paid in from home usually costs less. Declare cash of £10,000 or more leaving the UK, and over $10,000 arriving in Nigeria.

Why people carry dollars

Many readers grew up with the habit: change pounds to dollars in London, then change dollars at a bureau in Lagos. Dollars feel more liquid than pounds, and in the past they were easier to sell. But the habit has a cost, and the rules around foreign currency in Nigeria have changed.

Under the CBN FX Manual that took effect in June 2026, TheCable reported that Nigerian entities must generally price and settle in naira, with some sector exemptions. Shops, restaurants, hotels and transport inside Nigeria should be charging in naira, so dollars in your pocket usually have to be sold for naira before you can spend them.

The double conversion cost

Every conversion has a cost: the gap between the rate you get and the mid-market rate, plus any fee. Converting twice pays that cost twice. Worked example, with made-up margins:

RouteStep 1Step 2Total cost on £1,000
Pounds to dollars to naira3% margin at a UK bureau: £302% margin at a Lagos bureau on the £970 left: about £19.40About £49.40
Pounds straight to naira2% marginNone£20
UK card with no foreign feeCard scheme rate, no fee from the bankNoneClose to the scheme rate, plus any ATM operator fee

The real margins vary by provider, amount and day, so compare the naira you would end up with, not the headline rate. For card costs, see using a Monzo or Starling card in Nigeria and withdrawing naira at a Lagos ATM.

When dollars do make sense

  • A cost actually invoiced in dollars that you will pay in cash, where the seller is permitted to accept it.
  • Paying into your own domiciliary account in Nigeria, to hold rather than spend.
  • A small emergency reserve in case your cards fail, kept separate from your wallet.
  • Onward travel to another country where dollars are the easier currency.

For a reserve, a modest amount is enough. A large stack of cash is a theft risk and a declaration question.

Where to change money in Nigeria, if you do

If you arrive with dollars or pounds, the options are a bank, a licensed bureau de change, or a hotel desk. Each quotes its own buying rate, and the gap between buying and selling rates is the margin you pay. A few habits help:

  • Ask for the total naira you will receive for your exact amount, not the rate alone.
  • Count the notes before you leave the counter, and ask for a receipt.
  • Avoid street changers at the airport or in markets: you have no receipt and no recourse if notes are short or fake.
  • Change only what you need for a few days at a time; leftover naira is costly to change back.
  • Old, torn or marked dollar notes are often refused or bought at a lower rate, so carry clean, recent notes if you carry any.

Selling dollars into your own domiciliary account and then converting through your bank leaves a paper trail, which is useful if you later need to show where money came from.

Cash declaration limits

Leaving the UK

GOV.UK says you must declare cash of £10,000 or more when travelling between Great Britain and a country outside the UK, and that a family or group travelling together must declare if the combined amount is £10,000 or more. Cash includes notes, coins and travellers' cheques. You can declare online up to 72 hours before travel or by phone. For context, US$10,000 was roughly £7,500 at the Bank of England's 22 October 2026 rate. See the UK cash declaration.

Arriving in Nigeria

TheCable's summary of the 2026 FX Manual says you may bring in up to $10,000 in cash without declaration, and amounts above that must be declared on arrival. Declaring is not a tax; failing to declare is the problem. The limits on carrying cash to Nigeria are covered in detail separately.

A sensible travel money mix

  1. A UK debit card with low or no foreign transaction fees as your main way to pay.
  2. A second card from a different bank and network, kept apart from the first.
  3. Naira in a Nigerian account, funded before you fly, for transfers to vendors and family.
  4. A small cash reserve, in dollars or pounds, for emergencies only.

Many vendors in Nigeria take payment by bank transfer, which makes a funded naira account more useful than cash for many purchases.

Checklist before you fly

  1. Add up the costs you expect to pay in dollars, if any, and buy only that amount.
  2. Fund a naira account for the rest, or check your UK card's foreign fees.
  3. Count the total cash your family group is carrying and declare if it reaches £10,000.
  4. Split cash and cards between bags and people.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds GBP and NGN together. Before you travel you can convert pounds straight to naira with Swap, where the rate is shown first and the fee on its own line before you approve, and then pay people in Nigeria by local transfer through Send. That replaces the pounds-to-dollars-to-naira round trip with one conversion. See the multicurrency account.

Questions people ask

Should I take dollars or pounds to Nigeria?

For spending, neither is ideal: prices in Nigeria are generally in naira. Converting pounds to naira once usually costs less than going through dollars.

How much cash can I take from the UK to Nigeria?

There is no UK limit, but you must declare £10,000 or more leaving Great Britain. Nigeria requires declaration above $10,000 on arrival, per reports of the 2026 FX Manual.

Is it cheaper to change money in Lagos or London?

It depends on the day and provider. Compare how much naira you end up with on each route.

Can I pay in dollars in Nigeria?

Under the 2026 FX Manual, Nigerian businesses must generally price and settle in naira, with some sector exemptions.
