Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

How much cash can I carry from the UK to Nigeria?

No cap applies to cash carried from the UK to Nigeria, but both countries have declaration thresholds. What each one is, and how to declare at both ends.

The short answer

Neither the UK nor Nigeria sets a maximum on cash you can carry, but both require a declaration above a threshold. The UK requires you to declare £10,000 or more before you leave for a country outside the UK; Nigeria requires cash and negotiable instruments above US$10,000 (or its equivalent) to be declared to the Nigeria Customs Service on arrival. Because the Nigerian threshold is set in dollars, it is reached at a lower pound amount.

Two thresholds, one journey

Leaving the UKArriving in Nigeria
Threshold£10,000 or more (GOV.UK)Above US$10,000 or equivalent (Nigeria Customs Service, as reported; MLPPA 2022)
What countsNotes and coins, bearer bonds, travellers' cheques, signed cheques not made out to a named personForeign currency, negotiable instruments and, per Customs, precious metals
When to declareBefore you go; online or by phone, from 72 hours before travelAt the airport on arrival, to Customs
If you do notCash can be seized; penalty up to £5,000 to get it backCash may be seized or confiscated, with possible prosecution

The dollar threshold matters. At the Bank of England's spot rate on 22 October 2026, US$10,000 was roughly £7,500. The rate moves, so check it on the day: a traveller with £8,000 could be under the UK threshold and over the Nigerian one.

The UK side

GOV.UK says you must declare cash of £10,000 or more when travelling between Great Britain and a country outside the UK. A family or group travelling together must declare if they carry £10,000 or more between them, even if no one person does. You can declare online or by phone on 0300 322 9434, no earlier than 72 hours before travel, and you will receive a reference number. You will be asked about the people travelling, the journey, the amount and type of cash, where it came from and what it is for. The full UK rules are in our guide to declaring cash when leaving the UK.

The Nigerian side

In July 2025, officers of the Nigeria Customs Service at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, as reported by Peoples Gazette, told airport stakeholders that foreign currency, precious metals and negotiable instruments above US$10,000 must be declared at arrival or departure "without exception", that amounts below are exempt, and that undeclared funds may be seized and the matter referred for prosecution. Mondaq's summary of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 records the same US$10,000 declaration requirement for cash and bearer negotiable instruments carried in or out.

Declaring is not a tax and does not mean you will lose the money. It records that you brought it in lawfully. Keep the declaration; a Nigerian bank may ask for it if you deposit the cash. Our Nigeria library covers carrying cash out of Nigeria for the return journey.

Steps if you are carrying a large sum

  1. Add up all cash in the party, in pounds and any other currency, on the day of travel.
  2. If it is £10,000 or more, declare it to UK customs before you leave and save the reference.
  3. If it is above US$10,000 equivalent, declare it to Nigeria Customs on arrival.
  4. Carry evidence of where the money came from: a UK bank withdrawal slip, a statement, a sale receipt.
  5. Keep the cash in hand luggage. Splitting it between travellers does not help: the UK rule counts a family or group's combined total.

Common situations

Spending money for a two-week visit
Usually well under both thresholds. Carry some cash for arrival and use a card or a naira account for the rest.
Cash gifts for a wedding or burial
Add up what everyone in the party carries. If the group total reaches £10,000, declare to UK customs; if it is above US$10,000 equivalent, declare in Nigeria too.
Money for building work or land
A large sum is better sent by bank or regulated provider, which leaves a record the seller, the builder and your UK bank can rely on.
Cash given to you by others to carry
You are responsible for declaring it and explaining where it came from. Ask for written details of whose money it is and what it is for, or decline.

Is cash the right way to move the money?

Cash is exposed to theft and loss, and naira-only payout rules make it less useful than it looks. Since 1 May 2026, under the CBN circular summarised by Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie, transfer operators pay recipients in Nigeria in naira only. If you plan to change pounds in Nigeria, you will pay a bureau's spread anyway. For most purposes a regulated transfer is safer and leaves a clearer record. For holiday spending, a modest amount of cash plus a card is usually enough.

Where Pryme fits

Instead of carrying a large sum, you can hold GBP and NGN in a Pryme account, Swap to naira when you choose (rate and fee shown before you approve) and send to family or pay bills in Nigeria. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank; outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners. See how accounts are secured.

Questions people ask

How much cash can I take to Nigeria from the UK?

There is no maximum, but declare £10,000 or more to UK customs before leaving, and above US$10,000 equivalent to Nigeria Customs on arrival.

Do I declare pounds in Nigeria?

Yes, if the pounds are worth more than US$10,000. The threshold is in dollars, so convert at the day's rate.

What happens if I do not declare cash at Lagos airport?

Customs officers said in July 2025 that undeclared funds above the threshold may be seized or confiscated and referred for prosecution.

Can my wife and I each carry £9,000 without declaring?

No for the UK: a family or group must declare if the combined total is £10,000 or more. Together you would also be above the Nigerian threshold.
