Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Withdrawing naira at a Lagos ATM with a UK card: the costs

Three layers of cost when you take naira from a Lagos ATM with a UK card: your bank's fee, the exchange rate and the ATM owner's charge.

The short answer

A naira withdrawal in Lagos with a UK card can carry three costs: your UK bank's foreign fee (for example 2.99% at Barclays, nothing at Starling, or 3% at Monzo once the allowance is used), the card scheme's exchange rate, and a charge from the Nigerian ATM owner, which the CBN lets acquirers set on a cost-recovery basis. Small per-withdrawal amounts multiply the ATM charge.

The three layers

  1. Your UK bank's fee, if any, for a foreign-currency withdrawal.
  2. The exchange rate used to turn the naira into pounds: Visa's or Mastercard's, depending on your card.
  3. The ATM owner's charge, set by the Nigerian bank that runs the machine.

Layer one: what your UK bank charges

CardFee on cash abroadLimit stated
Barclays debit2.99% non-sterling fee; no separate cash fee listedNot on the page
Monzo (standard)Free up to £200 per 30 days outside the EEA, then 3%Allowance by plan
StarlingNo Starling fee£300 a day

Sources: each bank's own page, checked October 2026. Other UK banks set their own fees; check your tariff in the app.

Layer two: the exchange rate

The naira you take out is converted to pounds at the card scheme's rate. Barclays says it uses Visa's rate on the day Visa processes the transaction; Monzo and Starling use Mastercard's rate. If the ATM offers to convert into pounds for you, decline: Starling advises choosing the local currency, because the ATM's own conversion often costs more.

Layer three: the Nigerian ATM's charge

Domestic ATM fees in Nigeria are fixed by the CBN. Its circular of 10 February 2025 sets them for Nigerian cards, but says withdrawals on international cards are charged on a cost-recovery basis by the acquirer, the bank that owns the ATM. There is no fixed figure: the machine should show the charge before you confirm.

ATMs also limit how much comes out at once. Access Bank's ATM page, for example, lists a maximum of ₦20,000 per transaction for cards from other banks and ₦40,000 for its own; it does not say how foreign cards are treated. If the cap is low, a modest sum takes several withdrawals, and each may carry the operator charge.

A worked example

Example only: you need ₦100,000 and the ATM pays out ₦20,000 at a time, so you make five withdrawals. Suppose the naira converts to £60 in total at the scheme rate.

CardUK bank feePlus
Barclays2.99% of £60 = £1.79Five ATM operator charges
Monzo, allowance unused£0Five ATM operator charges
Monzo, allowance used up3% of £60 = £1.80Five ATM operator charges
Starling£0Five ATM operator charges

The operator charge per withdrawal is shown on screen, so check it on the first one. Where one machine charges and another nearby does not, the cheaper machine wins for all five.

Do the CBN cash limits apply to you?

From 1 January 2026 the CBN set cash withdrawal limits of ₦500,000 a week for individuals across all channels, with ATM withdrawals capped at ₦100,000 a day within that (Channels TV report of the CBN circular). Those limits are written for accounts held in Nigeria. If you also have a Nigerian account and card, its withdrawals count against them. See CBN cash withdrawal limits.

Safety at the machine

Cost is not the only consideration. A UK card retained by a Nigerian ATM cannot simply be collected at the counter: Access Bank's ATM page tells holders of cards from other banks to contact their issuer, which for you means a replacement posted from the UK. A few habits reduce the risk:

  • Use machines in daylight, inside a bank hall or a busy mall where staff are nearby.
  • Cover the keypad when you enter your PIN, and decline help from strangers.
  • Freeze the card in your app the moment it is retained or lost.
  • Do not keep all your cards in one wallet; carry one, leave the other at your accommodation.

Ways to spend less

  • Use a card with no foreign fee for cash, and stay within its allowance.
  • Use ATMs inside bank branches or malls, which are safer and easier if the card is retained.
  • Take out larger amounts less often, within the machine's limits, to pay fewer operator fees.
  • Pay by naira transfer where possible; many vendors prefer it.

If an ATM fails to dispense but your UK account is debited, report it to your UK bank, which will raise a dispute with the card scheme. More on cards in using Monzo or Starling in Nigeria and the Barclays non-sterling fee.

Cash or transfer?

Cash is still needed for some things, such as small traders, tips and some transport. But many payments in Nigeria can be made by bank transfer, so the amount of cash you need may be less than you expect. Taking out only what you will spend in cash keeps all three layers of cost down.

Where Pryme fits

If you need naira for transfers rather than cash, converting pounds once with Swap and paying by local transfer avoids ATM charges altogether. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. See Send.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to withdraw naira with a UK card?

Your UK bank's fee (2.99% at Barclays, free at Starling, free within allowance at Monzo), the scheme exchange rate, and any charge set by the Nigerian ATM owner.

How much can I withdraw at a Nigerian ATM with a foreign card?

Each machine sets its own per-withdrawal amount; Access Bank lists ₦20,000 per transaction for other banks' cards. Your UK bank also has a daily limit.

Should I accept the ATM's conversion to pounds?

Usually not. Choose naira so your card scheme sets the rate.

Do CBN weekly cash limits apply to UK cards?

The limits are written for accounts in Nigeria. Withdrawals on a Nigerian account count against them.
