Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Does Confirmation of Payee work for payments to Nigeria?

Confirmation of Payee checks names on UK payments only. What that means for money sent to Nigeria, and how to check a Nigerian account name yourself.

The short answer

No. Confirmation of Payee is a UK name-checking service for domestic payments by Faster Payments, Bacs and CHAPS, so it does not check the name on a Nigerian bank account. It can check the UK leg, such as a payment to a money transfer firm's UK account, but the name on the Nigerian account has to be checked another way: with the recipient, and through any account-name check your provider shows.

When you pay a new UK payee, your banking app now tells you whether the name you typed matches the account. Many people assume the same check runs when they pay a Nigerian account. It does not, and knowing where the check stops is the difference between catching a typo and sending money to the wrong person.

What Confirmation of Payee is

Pay.UK, which runs the service, describes Confirmation of Payee (CoP) as an account name checking service designed to reduce misdirected payments. It covers domestic UK payments: Faster Payments, Bacs and CHAPS. More than 140 banks, building societies and payment firms offer it. The check returns one of four answers:

CoP resultWhat it meansWhat to do
YesThe name matches the accountCarry on
Close matchNearly matches; the actual account name is shownCorrect the name, or check with the payee
NoThe name does not matchContact the person or business you are paying before going further
UnavailableThe name could not be checked, for example the firm does not offer CoPTreat the payment with extra care

Why it stops at the UK border

CoP queries the receiving UK bank's records about its own account. A Nigerian bank is not part of the UK schemes, so there is nothing for the UK system to ask. When you send to Nigeria, the payment either goes by SWIFT from your bank, or you pay a money transfer firm in the UK which then pays out in Nigeria. In both cases, the Nigerian account name is outside CoP.

Where CoP still helps you

  • Paying a money transfer firm by bank transfer. If an app asks you to pay into its UK collection account, CoP checks that you are paying the firm's account and not an impostor. A "no" here is a serious warning.
  • Paying a relative's UK account before they send on to Nigeria.
  • Topping up your own multicurrency account through its UK account details.

A "no match" on any of these is worth stopping for. Scammers often ask victims to pay a UK account in a different name, then move the money abroad.

How to check a Nigerian account name

  1. Ask the recipient for the account name exactly as their bank shows it, the bank name and the 10-digit NUBAN. A screenshot from their banking app is better than a typed message.
  2. Use your provider's account check, if it shows one. Some money transfer apps display the account holder's name after you enter a Nigerian account number. If yours does, compare it carefully with what the recipient sent.
  3. Confirm by a second channel. If the details arrived by WhatsApp or email, confirm them by a call to a number you already know. Hacked accounts and changed details are common; see hacked WhatsApp money requests.
  4. Send a small amount first to a new account, and ask the recipient to confirm it arrived before sending the rest.

Example: where each check applies

An illustration. Tunde in Leeds sends £400 to his sister's account in Ibadan. He pays the money transfer firm by bank transfer from his UK bank: CoP checks that the UK collection account belongs to the firm, and returns "Yes". The firm then pays his sister's Nigerian account in naira: CoP plays no part. If Tunde had typed one digit of her NUBAN wrong, nothing in the UK system would have caught it. What protects him there is the screenshot of her account details, the name the app displays (if it displays one) and a small test transfer the first time.

  • UK bank to firm's UK account: CoP applies.
  • Firm to Nigerian account: CoP does not apply; your own checks do.

What this means if something goes wrong

Because CoP does not apply to the Nigerian account, its protections stop where the international payment begins. The PSR's reimbursement rules for APP scams also cover only UK payments by Faster Payments or CHAPS, not international payments, according to Nationwide's summary of the rules. So for money sent to Nigeria the checks you do before sending matter more than anything a UK bank can do afterwards. If you paid the wrong Nigerian account by mistake, see what to do after sending to the wrong account.

Where Pryme fits

When you top up your Pryme account from a UK bank, the payment to your UK account details is an ordinary domestic payment. From there Send pays a Nigerian account in naira, and the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Does Confirmation of Payee check Nigerian bank accounts?

No. It covers only domestic UK payments by Faster Payments, Bacs and CHAPS. A Nigerian account name has to be checked with the recipient and through any account-name check your provider offers.

What does 'close match' mean on Confirmation of Payee?

The name you typed nearly matches and the app shows the actual account name. Correct it or check with the person you are paying before you continue.

My money transfer app's UK account gave a 'no match'. Should I pay?

Stop and check with the provider through its official app or website. A no-match on a firm's collection account can mean you are paying an impostor.

How can I confirm a Nigerian account name before sending from the UK?

Ask the recipient for a screenshot from their bank app, compare it with any name your provider displays, confirm by a call and send a small test amount first.
