Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Name mismatch on a Nigerian account: why UK transfers fail

How Nigeria’s name enquiry check works, why surname order, middle names and nicknames trip it, and what to do when a UK transfer is held or returned.

The short answer

Transfers into Nigerian accounts run over NIBSS Instant Payment, where the sending institution looks up the account by number and checks the beneficiary’s name before paying. If the name you entered in the UK app does not match the name on the Nigerian account closely enough, the payout partner may hold, reject or return the transfer. Use the name exactly as the bank or wallet shows it.

How the check works in Nigeria

Nigeria’s instant interbank system, NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP), is account-number based. NIBSS says its name enquiry lets the sending institution check the beneficiary’s details by account number before the money is sent. When you send from the UK, your provider passes the transfer to a Nigerian payout partner, which runs that lookup. What comes back is the name registered on the account, which is tied to the holder’s BVN.

Each provider then decides how close a match it needs. Some show you the looked-up name and let you confirm; others compare it automatically and stop the payout if it differs too much. Our Nigeria library explains name enquiry in more detail.

The usual causes

What you typedWhat the account showsWhy it fails
Tunde BakareBAKARE BABATUNDE OLUWASEUNShort form of the first name, and surname-first order
Ngozi OkaforNGOZI CHIOMA EZEMarried name on your side, maiden name on the account
Mama ChineduADAEZE NNENNA OBIA family name, not the legal name
Ibrahim Musa LtdMUSA IBRAHIMPersonal account entered as a business

The examples are invented, but each pattern is common. Nigerian bank records usually follow BVN records, and BVN names are often surname first, with middle names included.

Getting it right before you send

  1. Ask the recipient for a screenshot of their account details page in their banking or wallet app, showing name and number together.
  2. Enter the name in full, in the order the bank shows, including middle names if your provider has room.
  3. If the app shows a looked-up name before you pay, compare it with the screenshot. If it is different, stop and ask.
  4. Never “fix” the mismatch by sending to a different person’s account. That creates a third-party payment that can trigger reviews on both sides.

If the transfer is held or returned

A held transfer usually shows as pending or under review. Providers commonly email or message you to confirm or correct the recipient. WorldRemit’s Nigeria page lists inaccurate recipient information as one cause of delay. If the payout partner rejects it outright, the money normally comes back to you, sometimes minus a fee and at a different rate if it was converted; the provider’s terms say which.

  • Reply to the provider through its app, not by calling numbers sent in messages.
  • Give the correct name exactly as the account shows it.
  • Ask whether the original exchange rate will be honoured if they resend.
  • If it has been returned, check the refund amount against what you paid.

For a transfer stuck for days, see what to do when a transfer is pending, and for a returned one, why transfers are reversed.

When the problem is on the recipient’s side

Sometimes the account name itself is wrong, for example a misspelt name carried over from a BVN record. That needs fixing in Nigeria, with the bank and the BVN record, not by you. Our Nigeria library covers how BVN name corrections work. Until it is fixed, send using the name exactly as the bank shows it, misspelling and all.

Sending to a business account

A business account in Nigeria carries the registered business name, for example the name on its CAC certificate, not the owner’s personal name. If you are paying a school, landlord’s company or supplier, ask for an invoice that shows the account name and number together and copy the name exactly, including “Ltd” or “Enterprises” where it appears. Paying a business into a personal account, or the reverse, is a common reason for a review, and for larger sums the provider may also ask about the purpose of the payment.

Worked example (illustrative only)

You send £300 to your brother, entering “Emeka Nwosu”. The payout partner’s lookup returns “NWOSU CHUKWUEMEKA PAUL”. Your provider’s automatic check treats “Emeka” and “Chukwuemeka” as different and holds the transfer. You get a message asking you to confirm the recipient; you reply in the app with the full name as the bank shows it, the provider resends, and the account is credited. Had you typed the full name from a screenshot at the start, there would have been no hold.

Cash pick-up is stricter

For cash, the name must match the recipient’s ID rather than an account. Ria’s US Nigeria page, for example, says the name must match the government-issued photo ID shown at pick-up. Our guide to cash pick-up covers the counter side.

What to check first

  • The full legal name, in the bank’s order.
  • The ten-digit account number, digit by digit.
  • The bank or wallet chosen in the list is the right one; several have similar names.

Where Pryme fits

With Pryme you can send to Nigerian accounts from a balance in pounds or naira. Your Personal Assistant can prepare a transfer to a saved recipient, but nothing moves until you approve it, which is the moment to check the name against the screenshot your recipient sent.

Questions people ask

Why did my transfer to Nigeria fail because of the name?

The payout partner checks the account name by account number. If what you typed differs too much from the registered name, the transfer can be held or returned.

Does the middle name matter on a Nigerian bank transfer?

It can. Nigerian account names often include middle names and put the surname first. Entering the full name as the bank shows it avoids most rejections.

Will I get my money back if the name was wrong?

If the payout is rejected, the provider normally refunds you. The amount can differ if conversion happened or a fee applies; check the provider’s terms.

Can I send to my relative using a nickname?

No. Use the legal name on the account. Family names and short forms are a common cause of failed payouts.
