Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Opening a Nigerian account for a Canada-born child

What Nigerian banks ask for to open a child's account: the child's NIN and birth certificate, the parent's BVN and ID, and how to sort them from Canada.

The short answer

Nigerian children's accounts are opened and run by a parent or guardian, and the banks we checked ask for the child's birth certificate (or passport), the child's NIN at some banks, and the parent's BVN and ID, rather than a BVN for the child. For a Canada-born child, that means getting the child a NIN (NIMC enrols minors with a parent's NIN slip and the birth certificate) and making sure the parent has a BVN or NRBVN.

Grandparents in Ibadan want somewhere to put birthday money. You want a naira account that will grow with the child and be useful for school fees or a gap year at home. A Canada-born child can have a Nigerian account if at least one parent is Nigerian, but the paperwork sits mainly on the parent's side. This guide sets out what the banks ask for and the order to do things in.

What Nigerian banks ask for

Three children's products, from the banks' own pages as read in October 2026:

Bank and productChild's documentsParent's documents
GTBank Smart Kids Save (0 to 12; teens 13 to under 18)Birth certificate, NIN, one passport photographNIN, BVN and/or NIN of each signatory, utility bill, photograph
Access Bank Early Savers (0 to 18)Birth certificate or international passport, photograph, KYCID (NIN, voter's card, international passport or driver's licence), BVN, TIN, proof of residence
UBA Kiddies Dom (USD, GBP, EUR)Birth certificate, photographsID, BVN, utility bill

The pattern is clear. The account is opened in trust for the child and operated by the parent, and the BVN asked for is the parent's. GTBank also asks for the child's own NIN. Products, opening balances and rates change; check the bank's page before applying. Our Nigeria guides to GTBank Smart Kids Save and Access Bank Early Savers go into each product.

Step one: the child's NIN

NIMC enrols children under 16 as minors. Its NIN issuance page says a minor must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, the parent or guardian's NIN slip is mandatory, proof of guardianship is needed if a guardian applies, and a birth certificate or statutory declaration of age is required. Enrolment is free. Minors do not get an e-ID card until 16. The Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa also requires a NIN for every passport application, including children's, so you will need it anyway. See getting a NIN for a child born in Canada.

Step two: the parent's BVN

The CBN's BVN page says that from December 2023 Tier 2 and Tier 3 individual accounts need both a BVN and a NIN. The signatory parent therefore needs a BVN that is active and matches their NIN. If you never had one, or have lived abroad for years, the Non-Resident BVN is designed for Nigerians outside Nigeria; GTBank's page says it is registered at nrbvn.com with ID and a liveness check, and issued "within 72 hours" after approval. Our Nigeria explainer on the NRBVN covers it. Note that a child's account does not usually need the child to have a BVN; see getting a BVN for a Canada-born child for when one is needed later.

Step three: documents for a Canada-born child

  • Birth certificate: the Canadian provincial certificate. Ask the bank whether it must be authenticated; the Ottawa mission authenticates documents for C$50 per document plus a C$50 administrative fee, but check what the bank actually requires before paying.
  • Passport: Access accepts the child's international passport in place of a birth certificate. A Nigerian passport also requires the child's NIN.
  • Photographs and forms: the bank's account-opening form, signed by the parent.
  • Proof of address: some banks want a Nigerian utility bill; ask whether a Canadian address is accepted for a diaspora parent.

Order of steps, in brief

  1. Check the parent's BVN is active and linked to their NIN; if there is no BVN, apply for an NRBVN.
  2. Enrol the child for a NIN, with the parent present and the birth certificate.
  3. Choose the product: a naira savings account for a child, or a domiciliary kiddies account if the money is in dollars or pounds.
  4. Ask the bank whether the Canadian birth certificate needs authentication and whether a Canadian address is accepted.
  5. Open the account, then share the account number with family who want to contribute.

Running the account from Canada

Grandparents and relatives can pay in by transfer to the account number. You, as signatory, need online access to see the balance and give instructions. Check whether the bank lets you open the account remotely or needs a visit by you or a representative; some banks let diaspora customers open accounts online, but children's products may need a branch. Keep a copy of every document you submit, and set a reminder for when the child turns 18, when GTBank says the account converts to an adult savings or current account.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme's naira Savings Boxes sit in a parent's own account and are for naira held in Nigeria; a Flexible or Fixed Box can be set aside for a child's goal, with rates shown in the app. A Pryme account can be opened from Canada and holds Canadian-earned money alongside naira.

Questions people ask

Does my child need a BVN to open a Nigerian bank account?

Not at the banks we checked. GTBank, Access and UBA children's products ask for the parent's BVN; GTBank also asks for the child's NIN.

Can a child born in Canada get a NIN?

NIMC enrols minors with a parent's NIN slip and a birth certificate or declaration of age, with the parent present. Enrolment is free.

What documents do I need for a GTBank kids account?

GTBank lists one passport photo each of signatory and child, the child's NIN and the guardian's NIN, BVN and/or NIN of each signatory, a utility bill and the child's birth certificate.

Can I open my child's Nigerian account from Canada?

Ask the bank. Online account opening for diaspora customers exists at some banks, but children's products may need a branch visit or representative.
