Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Buying from a Nigerian exporter: the NXP form and your payment

The NXP is filed by your Nigerian supplier, but it decides where your payment must land. How the form links to the money, and the deadlines.

The short answer

Your Nigerian supplier files the electronic Form NXP through its bank before the goods leave, and the export proceeds must then come back into the exporter's own domiciliary account in Nigeria. Pay the foreign currency to that export account, quote the NXP number, and pay within the repatriation window, which the CBN FX Manual 2026 puts at 90 days for non-oil exports according to Pavestones Legal (June 2026).

What the NXP is

Form NXP is the Nigerian exporter's declaration for commercial goods. The CBN replaced the paper form with an electronic one from 31 October 2019, filed on the Trade Monitoring System, with a valid TIN as a condition, according to Deloitte's summary of the circular on Mondaq. Deloitte reported a fixed processing fee at the time, separate from bank charges; check today's charge with the exporter's bank.

As the buyer, you do not file anything in Nigeria. But each NXP records what is leaving, its value and the currency expected back, and the exporter's bank tracks whether that money arrives. Your payment closes the loop.

What the exporter needs before the NXP

Banks set out what they want from an exporter. Sterling Bank's export financing page, for example, lists:

  • A registered company with CAC documents.
  • An NEPC Exporter's Certificate, obtained before the NXP is filed on the trade system.
  • An export domiciliary account, plus a naira current account for NXP-related charges.
  • A TIN, the export contract, packing list and invoices.

So if a supplier says it has no company and no NEPC certificate, it cannot normally file an NXP for a commercial shipment. That is a reason to pause before you pay.

Where your payment must go

The CBN's rules route export proceeds into the exporter's domiciliary account. TheNigeriaLawyer's June 2026 summary of the FX Manual 2026 adds that cash withdrawals from export proceeds accounts are no longer permitted and that transfers of export proceeds to third parties must state their purpose. In practice that means:

  • Pay in the foreign currency on the invoice, by bank transfer, to the account named on the exporter's company letterhead.
  • Put the invoice number and NXP number in the payment reference.
  • Do not pay a director's personal account, a relative or an agent. That breaks the link between the NXP and the proceeds (see when a supplier asks for a personal account).
  • Do not pay naira for an export the supplier has declared on an NXP, unless its bank confirms in writing how that will be treated.

The repatriation deadline

Under the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, effective 1 June 2026, non-oil export proceeds must be repatriated within 90 days (180 days for oil and gas), with a 1% penalty for late repatriation, according to Pavestones Legal. The manual replaced a January 2025 circular, explained by Stren & Blan on Mondaq, that had suspended extensions and set 180 days for non-oil exports. If you buy on credit, agree terms that fall inside the 90 days, and let the supplier's bank confirm the date.

Worked example

Example only. A Lagos exporter ships 40 cartons of dried pepper to you with a bill of lading dated 1 March. Under the 90-day rule, proceeds are due by about 30 May. If you agreed 60 days from invoice, you pay around 30 April and the exporter is inside the window. Terms of 120 days would push it past and expose the exporter to penalties and its bank to questions.

Common problems, and how to avoid them

  • Bank charges eat into the proceeds. If intermediary banks deduct fees, less arrives than the NXP value. Agree in the contract who bears charges and choose the charge option on your transfer to match.
  • Currency mismatch. If the NXP and invoice are in dollars and you pay in pounds, the exporter's bank has to reconcile two currencies. Pay in the invoice currency.
  • Paying from someone else's account. If a relative or a different company pays, the remitter will not match the buyer named in the export documents and the exporter's bank may ask questions. Pay from the business that is buying.
  • Part payments with no reference. Several small transfers without the NXP number are hard to match. Agree instalments in writing and reference each one.
  • Late changes to the order. If quantity or price changes after the NXP is filed, ask the exporter to amend its documents before you pay the new amount, so the proceeds match.

None of these breaks the law on your side, but each one delays the exporter's bank in closing the NXP, and that can delay your next shipment.

What to check first

  1. Ask for the NXP number and the exporter's bank before shipment.
  2. Confirm the beneficiary name matches the exporter's company name on the CAC register (see checking the CAC register).
  3. Confirm bank details by phone on a number you already hold, not one in the email that sent the invoice.
  4. Agree a payment date inside the repatriation window.
  5. Keep the invoice, NXP number, bill of lading and your payment confirmation together.

For the exporter's side in full, see Form NXP and export proceeds rules. For the account the money should land in, see a Nigerian exporter's dom account.

Where Pryme fits

From a Pryme Business Account you can send USD, GBP or EUR to a supplier's account. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve, and the payment reference carries your invoice and NXP numbers.

Questions people ask

Does the buyer abroad fill the NXP form?

No. The Nigerian exporter files the e-Form NXP through its bank on the CBN's trade system. Your part is to pay the right account, in the right currency, on time.

Can I pay a Nigerian exporter in naira?

For a commercial export declared on an NXP, the rules expect foreign currency proceeds into the exporter's domiciliary account. Ask the exporter's bank before paying any other way.

How long does a Nigerian exporter have to receive payment?

90 days for non-oil exports under the CBN FX Manual 2026, effective 1 June 2026, according to Pavestones Legal; oil and gas exports have 180 days. The 180 days for non-oil in a January 2025 CBN circular is superseded. Confirm the date with the exporter's bank.

Can I pay the director personally to save charges?

Avoid it. The proceeds will not match the NXP, the exporter's bank may query it, and you lose a clean record of paying the company.
