Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Funding Nigerian T-bills from South Africa: the money route

How rand gets to a Nigerian bank or broker to buy treasury bills, which SA allowance covers it, and the records you need to bring the money back.

The short answer

An adult South African resident can send up to R2 million a calendar year abroad under the single discretionary allowance, which the SARB says may be used for investment, and up to R10 million more under the investment allowance with a SARS Tax Compliance Status PIN. The money goes by SWIFT to your Nigerian bank or broker, is converted to naira, and the bills are bought at the CBN auction or from the bank; keep every transfer record, because Nigeria ties repatriation of naira to evidence of the original foreign inflow.

The route in five steps

  1. Set up in Nigeria first. You need a BVN (or the non-resident NRBVN), a naira account and a bank or broker that buys T-bills for customers abroad. GTBank, for example, says its NRBVN is for non-resident Nigerians, including by descent, and is issued within 72 hours of approval.
  2. Choose the account type. The CBN framework for Non-Resident Nigerian accounts, effective 1 January 2025, includes an Investment Account (NRNIA) for investing in Nigerian markets. Inflows must come from external sources via approved channels.
  3. Send from South Africa through your SA bank, under your allowance (below). The bank asks the reason and reports it under an investment category.
  4. Convert and buy. Your Nigerian bank converts the foreign currency to naira and places your order for bills at the primary auction or sells you bills it holds.
  5. Hold the records. SWIFT confirmation, conversion advice, purchase contract note and maturity advice.

Which South African allowance covers it

AllowanceAmount per calendar yearWhat you needSource
Single discretionary allowance (SDA)R2 million per adult resident (couples R4 million)ID; no SARS TCS PINSARS Budget 2026 FAQ; SARB AD Manual, 8 Oct 2026
Investment allowanceUp to R10 million moreSARS Tax Compliance Status PIN for AITSARS Budget 2026 FAQ; SARB AD Manual
Above R10 millionCase by caseApplication to SARB Financial Surveillance through your bankSARB guidelines for individuals

The SDA was R1 million until the SARB's final Budget circulars of 8 April 2026 doubled it; older bank pages may still show R1 million. Exchange Control Circular 1/2026 says the SDA may be used for any legal purpose abroad, including investment, and that capital transfers above the SDA need a SARS tax compliance status. For the application see using the investment allowance for Nigeria.

On the Nigerian side

T-bills are sold at a discount and repaid at face value. The CBN holds auctions for 91-day, 182-day and 364-day bills. At the 14 October 2026 auction, Nairametrics reported stop rates of 15.50% (91-day), 15.80% (182-day) and 15.90% (364-day). These change at every auction; check the latest results before you invest. How auctions and minimum bids work is explained in how to buy Treasury bills in Nigeria.

Ask your bank three questions before sending money: the minimum it will accept for a customer abroad, whether it charges a fee on primary auction orders, and whether bills are held in your name.

Worked example, including the currency

Example only: Tunde in Cape Town sends R300,000 under his SDA. His Nigerian bank receives the equivalent in dollars and converts it at an illustrative ₦85 per rand, giving ₦25,500,000. He buys a 364-day bill at an illustrative 15% discount rate: he pays ₦21,675,000 for ₦25,500,000 face value (₦25,500,000 × 0.85), earning ₦3,825,000 at maturity. Bank fees are ignored here.

  • If the naira holds at ₦85 per rand, the ₦25,500,000 maturity value is R300,000 plus his ₦3,825,000 left over from the original sum, which at ₦85 is R45,000.
  • If the naira weakens to ₦100 per rand over the year, ₦29,325,000 (the leftover ₦3,825,000 plus the ₦25,500,000 maturity) is R293,250, a loss in rand despite the interest.

The point: the interest is in naira, and the currency move can be bigger than the interest. See naira vs rand savings.

Bringing the money back

Lexworth's summary of the CBN framework says foreign currency balances in non-resident accounts are repatriable without restriction, while naira balances in the NRNIA are repatriable only on evidence of prior foreign inflows and related investment proceeds. Keep the SWIFT record of the money you sent in and the T-bill maturity advice together. In South Africa, your bank reports the return as disinvestment by a resident individual (515 or 516 on the inward list) and the interest under 309 08. Tax on the interest is covered in SARS tax on Nigerian T-bill interest. This is general information, not financial or tax advice.

What to check first

  • Your SDA used so far this calendar year, including travel and other transfers.
  • Whether your Nigerian bank will buy bills for an account opened from abroad, and its minimum.
  • That the account is in your own name and linked to your NRBVN or BVN.
  • How you will receive the maturity proceeds: rolled over, kept in naira or sent back.

Rolling over is where many investors abroad lose track. If you tell the bank to reinvest at maturity, the new bill is bought at the next auction's rate, which may be lower or higher, and the naira stays in Nigeria. Put the rollover instruction in writing and ask for a contract note each time, so your records for both countries stay complete.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account opened from South Africa holds naira, dollars, pounds and euros with account details for each, so dollars you send can wait in dollars until you choose to convert with Swap, with the rate and fee shown before you approve. Pryme does not sell treasury bills; you buy them through your bank or broker.

Questions people ask

Can I use my SDA to buy Nigerian treasury bills?

Yes. The SARB says the SDA may be used for any legal purpose abroad, including investment. It is R2 million per adult resident per calendar year after the April 2026 increase.

Do I need a SARS tax clearance to invest in Nigeria?

Not within the SDA. Above it, the investment allowance of up to R10 million needs a Tax Compliance Status PIN for AIT.

Can I bring the naira back to South Africa when the bill matures?

Under the CBN non-resident framework, naira in an investment account is repatriable on evidence of prior foreign inflows, so keep your transfer records.

What were Nigerian T-bill rates in October 2026?

Stop rates at the 14 October 2026 auction were 15.50%, 15.80% and 15.90% for 91, 182 and 364 days, as reported by Nairametrics.
