Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to buy NGX shares from South Africa

Opening a Nigerian stockbroking and CSCS account from South Africa, the identity steps, funding legally under SA exchange control, and the costs.

The short answer

Open an account with a Nigerian stockbroker licensed to trade on the NGX; the broker opens your CSCS account and gives you a Clearing House Number (CHN). You need a BVN or NRBVN, a Nigerian bank account and ID, and CSCS says investors outside Lagos and Abuja can provide notarised ID through the broker. Fund it from South Africa under your R2 million single discretionary allowance, sent by bank transfer, and keep the records so you can bring the money back.

How buying NGX shares works

Shares listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) are bought and sold through stockbrokers who are trading licence holders on the exchange. Ownership is recorded electronically at the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) against your CHN, your unique investor number. Dividends are paid by each company's registrar into the bank account on your file.

Step by step from South Africa

  1. Get a BVN or NRBVN. If you never enrolled in Nigeria, the NRBVN is the non-resident version. GTBank's page says it is registered online with ID, biodata and a liveness check, and issued within 72 hours of approval.
  2. Open a naira bank account in your own name. This is where dividends and sale proceeds will be paid.
  3. Choose a broker that onboards clients abroad. Ask for its NGX licence and its fees in writing.
  4. Complete the broker's KYC. CSCS lists a valid ID (NIN card, international passport, driver's licence or voter's card), contact details, BVN and bank account number. CSCS says that outside Lagos and Abuja, a notarised ID can be provided through the broker.
  5. The broker opens your CSCS account and gives you the CHN.
  6. Fund the broker account and place orders.

Funding from South Africa legally

Under South African exchange control, adult residents can send up to R2 million per calendar year under the single discretionary allowance (SDA) without a SARS tax compliance PIN, and the SARB says it may be used for investment abroad. Up to R10 million more needs a Tax Compliance Status PIN for the investment allowance. See the investment allowance and Nigeria. Send through your SA bank and give the investment as the reason. Do not fund a broker account by swapping rand with a private dealer; see why informal swaps are risky.

In Nigeria, the CBN framework for non-resident accounts lets an investment account hold foreign currency and naira for equity investments, with naira repatriable on evidence of prior foreign inflows. Keep the SWIFT record for every amount you send.

What it costs: an example of a fee schedule

Brokers set their own commission. As one published example, Bamboo's Nigerian stocks fee page (3 September 2026) lists for a purchase its own 1% commission, an SEC fee of 0.3%, stamp duty of 0.08%, a brokerage commission of 0.75% to 1.35%, a ₦4 trade alert and VAT of 7.5% on the brokerage and SEC fees. Sales add NGX and CSCS fees of 0.3% each. A direct broker without the platform layer will differ.

Example only: buying ₦2,000,000 of shares at a broker charging 1.35% brokerage plus the 0.3% SEC fee and 0.08% stamp duty costs ₦27,000 + ₦6,000 + ₦1,600, plus VAT of 7.5% on ₦33,000 (₦2,475), a total of ₦37,075, about 1.85% before any platform fee.

Tax in Nigeria

  • Dividends: 10% withholding tax deducted before payment; the treaty with South Africa gives a lower rate in some cases. See how SARS taxes Nigerian dividends.
  • Gains: Bamboo's June 2026 tax guide says that from 1 January 2026 share gains are taxed at personal income tax rates, with an exemption where disposal proceeds are ₦150 million or less and gains ₦10 million or less in 12 months. Check the current rules before selling.

South Africa may tax the same gains or dividends in your hands as a resident, with credit for Nigerian tax. This is general information, not tax or investment advice.

What to check first

  • The broker's NGX licence and whether it accepts clients living in South Africa.
  • Whether your CHN and bank details match your BVN or NRBVN exactly; mismatches stop dividends.
  • How much of your SDA you have used this calendar year.
  • How you will get dividends and sale proceeds back to South Africa, and which records your SA bank will ask for.

If you already hold Nigerian shares from years ago, for example bought before you moved or received as a bonus issue, check first whether they are still on paper certificates or already in a CSCS account. CSCS says it can run a global search for lost holdings, through your broker or at its offices in Lagos and Abuja.

Keep a single file for each holding: the broker's contract notes, the CSCS statement or portal view, each dividend advice and the SWIFT record of the money you sent. SARS can ask for the base cost of shares when you sell, and the Nigerian bank can ask for the original inflow before it will release naira for repatriation.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account opened from South Africa holds naira with Nigerian account details, alongside dollars, pounds and euros. Ask your broker and registrars whether they accept it for funding and dividends. Conversions use Swap, which shows the rate and fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

Can I buy Nigerian shares while living in South Africa?

Yes, through a Nigerian stockbroker that onboards clients abroad. You need a CSCS account, a BVN or NRBVN and a naira bank account.

Do I need to travel to Nigeria to open a CSCS account?

Not to open one. CSCS says investors outside Lagos and Abuja can give notarised ID through the broker, but biometric capture is needed later for broker transfers and stock position statements.

How do I send money from South Africa to buy NGX shares?

By bank transfer under your R2 million SDA, or the investment allowance with a SARS TCS PIN above that.

What fees do Nigerian brokers charge?

They vary. One published 2026 schedule lists 0.75% to 1.35% brokerage, 0.3% SEC fee, 0.08% stamp duty and VAT on fees for a purchase.
