Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

ACH or debit card: which funds a Nigeria transfer faster?

Why a bank-account (ACH) payment can hold a Nigeria transfer for days while a debit card moves it in minutes, and what you pay for speed.

The short answer

A debit card usually funds a Nigeria transfer faster. Wise, for example, says card payments reach it in 0 to 30 minutes, while ACH payments from a bank account can take up to 4 working days, because ACH moves in batches on business days only. Providers often price the two differently, so compare the fee and rate on each quote.

The short answer

When you send money to Nigeria through an app, the provider normally waits until it has your dollars, or is confident it will get them, before it pays out in Nigeria. How you pay therefore sets the first part of the clock. A card payment is authorised in seconds through the card network. An ACH payment is an instruction for your bank to send money in a batch, and the provider may wait for that batch to settle and for the risk of a reversal to pass.

Wise's USD transfer help page puts figures on it. It lists payment by debit or credit card as taking 0 to 30 minutes, a wire as same day or next day, ACH debit and ACH bank transfer as up to 4 working days, and Swift as 1 to 6 working days. Other providers will differ, but the order is similar.

Why ACH can take days

ACH itself is not always slow. Nacha, which runs the ACH Network's rules, said in August 2023 that about 80% of ACH volume settles in one banking day or less, with Same Day ACH offering three settlement times each banking day for payments up to $1 million. The delay you feel usually comes from three other places:

  • Business days only. Wise's ACH page says transfers are processed only on business days, a request on a weekend or holiday waits for the next one, and non-business days in the middle extend delivery.
  • Cut-off times. A request that reaches your bank after its daily cut-off is processed the next business day.
  • Checks on larger amounts. Wise says bigger transfers may face extra security checks from the bank or the provider, which add time.

There is also a reason providers are careful. An ACH debit can be returned after the fact, for example if the account lacks funds. A provider that paid out in naira before the dollars cleared would carry that loss, so many hold ACH-funded transfers until the money has arrived.

Why the card is usually faster, and what it can cost

A debit card payment is approved or declined in real time, so the provider knows straight away that the money is there. That is why card-funded transfers can be paid out within minutes when the Nigerian side credits over NIP, the real-time system NIBSS describes. Remitly's US Nigeria page, for instance, refers to using Express "with a debit or credit card, where available".

Speed is not always free. Providers can charge a different fee, or apply a different rate, depending on how you pay; Remitly's page says promotional and standard rates depend on payment type. Credit cards can add a separate risk: your card issuer may treat the payment as a cash advance, with its own fee and interest. Our page on credit card cash-advance fees covers that.

Worked example (illustrative figures only)

Say you need to send $400 for a family bill due on Monday, and it is Friday evening. A provider quotes two options:

OptionTransfer feeRate you getNaira deliveredLikely arrival
ACH from checking$0₦1,400 per $1₦560,000Tuesday or later (ACH waits for business days)
Debit card$4₦1,400 per $1₦560,000 (fee paid on top: $404 total)Friday night, if no checks

Here the card costs you $4 more to get the money there before Monday. If instead the card quote applied a weaker rate, say ₦1,390 per $1, the naira delivered would drop to ₦556,000, a ₦4,000 difference. The figures are examples; check the real quote on screen.

How to choose: what to check first

  1. Look at the expected delivery time on the quote for each payment method. Under the CFPB remittance rule, a covered provider must disclose when the money will be available before you pay.
  2. Compare the amount the recipient gets, not only the fee. The exchange rate is where most of the cost can sit.
  3. If you use ACH, start early in the week and before your bank's cut-off, and avoid the days around a Federal Reserve holiday.
  4. Check whether your debit card has a foreign transaction fee or a daily spending limit that could cause a decline.
  5. For a first ACH transfer, expect extra verification; repeat transfers are often smoother.

Where Pryme fits

With a Pryme account you can receive USD into local account details and keep it there, then use Swap to convert to naira when you choose and send to a Nigerian account. Because the dollars are already in the account, the transfer to Nigeria does not depend on a fresh card or ACH pull. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. More on the account itself: multicurrency account.

Questions people ask

Why is my Remitly or Wise transfer to Nigeria pending for days?

If you paid by bank account (ACH), the provider is usually waiting for the money to arrive. Wise says ACH payments can take up to 4 working days to reach it; weekends and holidays add time.

Is it cheaper to pay by bank account than debit card?

Often, but not always. Providers can price payment methods differently through the fee or the rate, so compare the amount your recipient receives on both quotes.

Can I use a credit card to send money to Nigeria?

Many providers accept credit cards, but your card issuer may treat it as a cash advance with its own fee and interest. Check with your issuer first.

Is a wire faster than ACH for sending to Nigeria?

For paying a provider, Wise lists a wire as reaching it the same day or next day, faster than ACH. A wire usually carries a bank fee, which you should add to the comparison.
