Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Visitor health insurance for parents from Nigeria

Why parents visiting from Nigeria need private health cover, what visitor policies pay for, and how pre-existing condition clauses decide claims.

The short answer

Parents visiting from Nigeria on an ordinary visitor visa are not required by IRCC to buy health insurance, unlike super visa applicants, but they will normally not be covered by a provincial health plan, so a hospital stay is billed to the family. Visitor insurance pays for emergency care, and the clause that decides most claims is the pre-existing condition or stability clause, which can exclude conditions such as hypertension or diabetes if treatment changed shortly before the trip.

A three-month visit for a christening, a graduation or a new grandchild is one of the most common reasons Nigerian parents travel to Canada. Most of these visits pass without a hospital visit. The ones that do not can produce bills that families remember for years. This page explains why visitor insurance matters, what it typically pays for and how to read the clauses that decide claims. It does not quote prices, which depend on age, health and the insurer.

Visitor visa or super visa: different rules

Visitor visaSuper visa
Insurance required by IRCCNoYes: at least $100,000, one year or more, health care, hospitalisation and repatriation
Length of stayIRCC points parents planning six months or less to the visitor visaBuilt for longer stays; IRCC sets the limits
IRCC application fee (Sept 2026 fee list)$100 per person$100 per person
Biometrics$85 per person, $170 family maximum$85 per person, $170 family maximum

IRCC's super visa page notes that a parent who plans to stay six months or less may be eligible for an ordinary visitor visa instead. That visitor visa has no insurance condition, so the decision to insure is the family's. The super visa rules are covered in super visa medical insurance.

Why it matters

Provincial health plans such as OHIP in Ontario cover residents who qualify; a visiting parent will not normally be one of them. Hospitals bill uninsured visitors directly, and emergency care for a stroke, heart attack, fall or complicated infection can run into many thousands of dollars. Families sometimes assume the hospital will settle for a Nigerian-level price or a payment plan. Some do offer plans, but the bill remains a debt.

What visitor policies typically cover

  • Emergency hospital care, doctors' fees and diagnostic tests.
  • Prescription drugs needed for the emergency.
  • Ambulance transport.
  • Return to Nigeria for further treatment, or repatriation of remains.
  • Sometimes a family member's travel to be with the patient.

They typically do not cover routine check-ups, refills of regular medication, planned treatment, or anything related to a condition excluded under the policy's pre-existing condition terms. Read the exclusions list in full.

Pre-existing condition clauses

This is where most disputes arise. Policies commonly offer two kinds of cover:

OptionWhat it usually means
Cover excluding pre-existing conditionsAnything related to a condition your parent had before the start date is not paid for, however stable it was
Cover including stable pre-existing conditionsA condition is covered only if it has been "stable" for a stated period before departure, as the policy defines stable

"Stable" is a defined term and the definitions differ between insurers. It often means no new diagnosis, no new symptoms, no change in medication or dosage and no hospital admission during the stability period. A doctor in Lagos switching your mother's blood pressure tablets six weeks before the flight can be enough to exclude a later stroke. Ask the parent's doctor for a recent medical summary, and answer every medical question on the application accurately; a wrong answer can void the policy.

If your parent falls ill during the visit

  1. Call the insurer's assistance line as soon as it is safe to do so; many policies require it.
  2. Tell the hospital at registration that your parent is a visitor with private insurance and give the policy number.
  3. Ask whether the insurer will pay the hospital directly; if not, keep every invoice and receipt.
  4. Ask the treating doctor for a written summary in case the insurer reviews whether the condition was pre-existing.
  5. If the insurer refuses, ask for the decision and the clause in writing, then use its complaints process.

Example only. Your father, 68, visits Winnipeg for 90 days on a policy that covers stable pre-existing conditions with a 90-day stability period. His diabetes medication was last changed five months before departure, so the condition met the stability test, and a diabetic emergency in week six would be assessed as covered, subject to the deductible and limits. Had the dose changed one month before travel, the same emergency could be excluded.

What to check first

  1. Is the start date the day your parent lands, not the day they leave Lagos or Abuja?
  2. Does the coverage amount match the risk? A minimum may not cover a long intensive care stay.
  3. What is the stability period, and has anything changed in your parent's treatment within it?
  4. Is there a deductible, and is it per claim or per trip?
  5. Does the insurer pay the hospital directly or reimburse you later?
  6. Can you extend the policy if the visit is extended, before it expires?
  7. What is the refund rule if your parent returns early?

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not sell insurance. When a family splits a premium between siblings in Canada and the UK and parents at home, Send and Swap show the rate and fee before you approve, and a verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai records who paid. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Is health insurance mandatory for parents visiting Canada on a visitor visa?

IRCC does not require it for an ordinary visitor visa. It is required for the super visa.

Will OHIP cover my parents when they visit?

Provincial plans cover qualifying residents. A visiting parent will not normally qualify, so emergency care is billed to the family.

Does visitor insurance cover my mother's high blood pressure?

Only if the policy includes stable pre-existing conditions and her condition meets the policy's definition of stable for the stated period.

Can we buy visitor insurance after my parents arrive?

Some insurers sell policies after arrival, often with a waiting period for illness. Check the policy terms before relying on it.
