Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Visitor health insurance for parents visiting the US

Why visitor medical cover matters for parents coming from Nigeria, what EMTALA does and does not do, and the exclusions to read in any policy.

The short answer

Visitor health insurance matters because parents visiting the US from Nigeria have no public cover, and a hospital stay can cost more than the whole trip. Under EMTALA, emergency departments at Medicare-participating hospitals must screen and stabilise anyone with an emergency condition regardless of ability to pay, but that is not free care; bills follow. Visitor policies commonly limit pre-existing conditions, set a maximum, and exclude routine care, so read the exclusions before buying.

Why it matters for visiting parents

Your parents will usually not be covered by your employer plan, and the US has no general public health service that short-term visitors can turn to. The State Department's visitor visa page does not list health insurance as a requirement for a B-2 visa, so many families skip it. The risk is the bill: a fall, a heart problem or a stroke during a visit can lead to emergency care, admission and follow-up that the family must pay for.

What EMTALA does, and what it does not

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act requires hospitals that take part in Medicare and offer emergency services to give a medical screening examination to anyone who asks for treatment of an emergency condition, and to stabilise them or arrange an appropriate transfer, regardless of ability to pay (CMS, page modified March 2026). It means your parent will not be turned away from an emergency department for lack of insurance. CMS's page says nothing about charges, and treatment is billed. After stabilisation, further care, such as surgery that is not urgent, is not covered by the EMTALA duty.

Common exclusions and limits

Visitor policies differ by insurer and plan. Features that are common, and worth checking line by line in the policy wording:

  • Pre-existing conditions. Many plans exclude them, or cover only a sudden, unexpected flare-up ("acute onset") up to a lower limit. For parents with diabetes, high blood pressure or heart conditions, this is the clause that matters most.
  • Age bands. Premiums usually rise with age, and some plans reduce the maximum benefit for older travellers.
  • Policy maximum. The most the plan will pay in total. A low maximum can be used up by a single admission.
  • Deductible and coinsurance. What you pay before the plan pays, and the share you pay after.
  • Routine and chronic care. Check-ups, regular medicines and management of existing conditions are usually excluded. Bring enough medication from Nigeria.
  • Dental and eye care. Often emergency-only, with low limits.
  • Waiting periods if the policy is bought after arrival.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation, which may be included or extra.

Worked example (illustrative figures)

A parent is admitted after a fall and the hospital bills $40,000. The policy has a $250 deductible, then pays 100% up to a $100,000 maximum within its network. The family pays the $250 deductible and the plan pays $39,750. If the policy instead paid 80% after the deductible, the family would pay $250 plus 20% of $39,750, which is $7,950, a total of $8,200. If the fall were linked to an excluded pre-existing condition, the plan might pay nothing. All figures are examples.

Buying a policy: what to check

  1. Buy before travel, covering the full stay including any extension.
  2. Disclose medical history in full; a claim can be refused if conditions were not declared.
  3. Read the pre-existing condition clause and the acute onset limit.
  4. Check the provider network and whether the insurer pays hospitals directly or you pay and claim back.
  5. Note the claims phone line and keep the policy number with your parents' passports.
  6. Check whether the insurer is regulated in a US state or abroad, and where complaints go.

If something happens during the visit

  1. Call the insurer's assistance line as soon as possible, ideally before non-emergency treatment, to confirm cover and find an in-network provider.
  2. In an emergency, go to the nearest emergency department first; call the insurer afterwards.
  3. Keep every bill, discharge summary and receipt, and ask the hospital for itemised bills.
  4. If the hospital bills you directly, ask about its financial assistance policy and whether it will wait for the insurer to pay.
  5. Do not let your parent fly home before you have all the paperwork the claim needs.

If your parent is coming for treatment

Visitor insurance is for the unexpected. If the purpose of the visit is medical treatment, the State Department says applicants should show a diagnosis, a letter from the US provider about the treatment, and proof that the costs will be paid. See medical treatment in the US for a parent from Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

Visitor insurance is usually paid in dollars before travel. A Pryme multicurrency account holds the dollars you set aside for your parents' trip separately from your day-to-day money, and the Personal Assistant can remind you when cover starts and ends. For the rest of the trip budget, see bringing parents to visit the US.

Questions people ask

Do my parents need health insurance to visit the US?

The State Department's visitor visa page does not list it as a requirement, but US medical bills are high and visitors have no public cover.

Will a US hospital treat my parent without insurance?

Emergency departments at Medicare-participating hospitals must screen and stabilise emergency patients regardless of ability to pay under EMTALA, but treatment is billed.

Does visitor insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Often not, or only a sudden flare-up up to a lower limit. Read the pre-existing condition clause before buying.

How much visitor insurance do my parents need?

Enough maximum cover for a hospital admission, with a deductible you can afford. Compare policy maximums, coinsurance and exclusions, not only price.
