Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Visiting family from Nigeria: getting spending money in Canada

Naira cards may be limited or blocked abroad, and carrying cash has rules. How visiting parents and relatives can pay their way in Canada safely.

The short answer

Check the visitor's naira card before travel: some banks raised international limits in 2026 (Nairametrics reported GTBank at $40,000 a quarter on its naira card), but Fidelity's FAQ says individual naira cards are not permitted for international transactions. A dollar card linked to a domiciliary account, the host paying and being repaid at home, or declared cash are the usual backups. Cash of C$10,000 or more must be reported to the CBSA on arrival.

Start with the visitor's own cards

The first question is whether the visitor's Nigerian cards work in Canada, and up to what amount. That is set by each bank and has changed a lot. Nairametrics reported on 7 September 2026:

BankReported international limit
GTBank naira card$40,000 a quarter
FirstBank naira Mastercard$10,000 a quarter (POS and web), ATM $1,000 a day
Zenith naira cardsUp to $50,000 a year
Stanbic IBTC Mastercard$8,000 a quarter
UBA World USD cardUp to $20,000 POS, $10,000 online

Not every bank allows it. Fidelity Bank's FAQ (undated) says "Individual Naira Cards are not permitted for international transactions across all channels as mandated by CBN" and points customers to its dollar cards. Ask the visitor to call their bank before travel to confirm the current limit, that the card is enabled for international use, and which channels (shops, ATMs, online) it covers.

Options, from simplest to most work

  1. A working naira card. Simplest if the limit is enough. The bank converts at its own rate; the visitor sees the naira cost on their statement.
  2. A dollar card from a domiciliary account. If the visitor has a USD domiciliary account, a linked dollar card avoids the naira limit. Fidelity, for example, lists a 3% charge on dollar-card spending in other currencies, so Canadian-dollar spending is not free.
  3. The host pays, the visitor repays at home. The host covers costs in Canada and the visitor repays in naira to the host's Nigerian account or to family. Keep it within the family and record what was agreed.
  4. A prepaid card bought by the host. A reloadable prepaid card in the host's name, given to the visitor for day-to-day spending, caps the risk if it is lost.
  5. Cash. Useful as a backup, not as the plan. See the reporting rule below.

Cash rules both ways

The CBSA's memorandum D19-14-1 says anyone importing or exporting currency or monetary instruments of C$10,000 or more (foreign currency is valued at the Bank of Canada rate) must report it, and unreported currency may be seized. Nigeria's Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022, as summarised on Mondaq, requires cash over US$10,000 carried out of Nigeria to be declared. Declaring is not a penalty; it is the step that keeps the money safe. See declaring cash arriving from Lagos.

Before the trip

  • Visa paperwork. If the visitor is applying with a letter of invitation, IRCC says the letter should state how the trip will be paid for. Make sure the money plan in the letter matches what actually happens.
  • Card checks. Call the bank, confirm limits and international use, and note the bank's number for lost cards.
  • Two payment methods. Carry at least two (a card and some cash, or two cards) in case one is declined.
  • Phone access. If the bank sends one-time codes to a Nigerian number, keep that SIM working on roaming or arrange another way to receive codes.

A simple money plan for a three-week visit (example)

One way families set it up, using example roles rather than figures:

Big costs
The host pays changes to flights, accommodation and medical insurance directly from Canada.
Everyday spending
The visitor uses a working naira or dollar card for shopping and transport, within the bank's limit.
Backup
A modest amount of declared cash, kept separate from the cards.
Repayment
The visitor repays the host in naira at home after the trip, at a rate agreed in advance.

Agreeing the rate before the trip avoids arguments later, and keeps the arrangement a family matter rather than an informal currency deal.

Common problems in Canada

  • Card declined at the till. Often the international limit is used up or online and in-store limits differ. Try a different channel or the backup card.
  • Currency choice at the terminal. If asked whether to pay in naira or Canadian dollars, choosing Canadian dollars usually avoids the merchant's conversion markup.
  • Pre-authorisations. Hotels and car hire may hold a larger amount than the bill, which can use up a limited quarterly allowance.

If family at home also needs money during the visit, see keeping a naira balance for family costs.

Where Pryme fits

A visitor can open a Pryme Personal Account before travelling and hold USD alongside naira, converting with Swap, which shows the rate and the fee first. The host can send naira to family at home from their own account, which keeps the repayment side simple.

Questions people ask

Will my Nigerian naira card work in Canada?

It depends on your bank. Some raised international limits in 2026, while Fidelity's FAQ says its individual naira cards cannot be used internationally. Call your bank before travel.

How much cash can a visitor bring to Canada?

There is no limit, but amounts of C$10,000 or more must be reported to the CBSA on arrival, and Nigeria requires cash over US$10,000 to be declared on departure.

Is a dollar card better than a naira card in Canada?

It avoids naira-card limits, but spending in Canadian dollars still carries a conversion charge; Fidelity lists 3% on its dollar cards for other currencies.

Should I pay in naira or Canadian dollars at the terminal?

Choosing Canadian dollars usually avoids the merchant's own conversion, letting your bank convert instead.
