Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Spain

Carrying over €10,000 in cash into Spain from Nigeria

The EU rule on declaring €10,000 or more in cash at a Spanish airport, what counts as cash, what happens if you do not declare, and the Nigerian side.

The short answer

Anyone entering the EU through Spain carrying €10,000 or more in cash, or the equivalent in other currencies, must declare it to the customs authorities on arrival under EU Regulation 2018/1672. Undeclared cash can be detained for up to 30 days, extendable to 90, and Spain sets its own penalties. Leaving Nigeria, cash above US$10,000 must also be declared to Nigerian Customs.

Families travelling from Lagos or Abuja to Madrid or Barcelona sometimes carry cash: for a deposit on a flat, to help a relative, or because a transfer felt slow. Carrying cash is not illegal. Failing to declare it above the threshold is. This guide sets out the rule on both ends of the journey.

The EU rule that applies in Spain

Since 3 June 2021 cash controls at the EU’s external borders have been governed by Regulation (EU) 2018/1672, which applies directly in Spain as in every member state. Its key provisions, from the EUR-Lex text:

Article 3(1): the threshold
A carrier entering or leaving the Union with cash of €10,000 or more must declare it to the competent authorities of the member state of entry or exit and make it available for control.
Article 2: who is a carrier
Any natural person entering or leaving the Union carrying cash on their person.
Article 2: what is cash
Currency (notes and coins), bearer-negotiable instruments such as travellers’ cheques, commodities used as highly liquid stores of value such as gold coins, and certain prepaid cards.
Article 4: unaccompanied cash
For €10,000 or more sent by post, courier or freight, authorities may require a disclosure declaration within 30 days and can detain the cash until it is filed.
Article 7: detention
Cash may be temporarily detained for no more than 30 days, extendable to a maximum of 90 days.
Article 14: penalties
Each member state sets effective, proportionate and dissuasive penalties for failing to declare.

The threshold covers all currencies combined at their euro equivalent. €6,000 in notes plus US$5,000 can take you over €10,000 depending on the rate on the day.

How to declare in Spain

The declaration is made to the Spanish customs authorities at the airport of arrival. Spain’s anti-money-laundering law, Ley 10/2010, brings people who move means of payment within its scope through its article 34. We could not open the Agencia Tributaria’s customs pages when we checked in October 2026, so this article does not name the form or the Spanish penalty scale. Before you travel, check the Agencia Tributaria’s guidance for travellers, or ask customs at the airport before you leave the baggage hall: look for the red channel or the customs office.

Leaving Nigeria

Mondaq’s summary of Nigeria’s Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 says cash and bearer-negotiable instruments above US$10,000 carried into or out of Nigeria must be declared to Customs. TheCable’s summary of the CBN FX Manual 2026 says travellers bringing in up to US$10,000 need no declaration and above that use Form TM/TE. Declare at the Nigerian airport before departure and keep the copy; Spanish customs or your Spanish bank may want to see it.

Questions you will be asked

  • Who owns the cash, and who it is for.
  • Where it came from: savings, a sale, a gift from family.
  • What it will be used for in Spain.
  • Your journey and address in Spain.

Carry documents that answer these: a Nigerian bank withdrawal slip or statement, the Nigerian customs declaration, and, for a deposit, the Spanish rental contract.

After you arrive: putting the cash in a bank

The airport is only the first check. Paying a large sum of cash into a Spanish account brings the bank’s duty under Ley 10/2010 to check the source of funds (article 6), and if it cannot it must not carry out the transaction (article 7.3). The airport declaration helps, but the bank will still want to see where the money came from in Nigeria. Many landlords and businesses prefer bank transfer for large sums anyway.

A worked example

Example only; the rate is illustrative. A couple fly Lagos to Madrid. One carries €7,000 and the other carries €4,000. The regulation is framed around each person carrying cash, so on that reading neither reaches €10,000, while one person carrying the whole €11,000 clearly must declare. Because the family is travelling together with €11,000 in total, the safer course is to declare and ask customs. If one person carries €6,000 and US$5,000, at an illustrative rate of $1.10 per euro the dollars are worth about €4,545, a total of about €10,545, which must be declared.

Alternatives to carrying cash

A bank transfer from a domiciliary account is slower but leaves the record a Spanish bank and a landlord will ask for. Our guides to sending euros from a Nigerian bank and moving savings from Nigeria to a Spanish bank cover the routes.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds EUR alongside NGN, USD and GBP, so money for a Spanish deposit can be held in euros and sent by transfer, with the fee shown before you approve on Send. Verifiable statements through receipts help show where the money came from.

Questions people ask

How much cash can I bring into Spain from Nigeria?

There is no limit, but €10,000 or more (or the equivalent in other currencies) must be declared to customs on arrival under EU Regulation 2018/1672.

What happens if I do not declare cash at a Spanish airport?

The cash can be detained for up to 30 days, extendable to 90, and Spain applies its own penalties for failing to declare.

Do I need to declare cash leaving Nigeria?

Yes, above US$10,000, according to summaries of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022. Declare at the Nigerian airport and keep the copy.

Does the €10,000 limit include dollars and pounds?

Yes. All currencies count together at their euro value, and so do travellers’ cheques, some prepaid cards and gold coins.
