Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

US wire to Nigeria returned: why and when you get it back

The usual reasons Nigerian banks send US wires back, what US rules say about refunds and errors, and why the amount returned can be less than you sent.

The short answer

Nigerian banks most often return US wires because the account name or number does not match, the account is in the wrong currency or is restricted, or the routing details are outdated. The money comes back through the same chain of banks, often less any charges taken along the way. Where the provider made the error, US rules require correction within one business day of your instructions or as soon as reasonably practicable; where you gave a wrong account number, the provider must still try to recover the funds and refund what it can within three business days of reporting.

Why Nigerian banks return wires

  • Name does not match the account. The beneficiary name on the wire differs from the name on the account, which comes from the holder's BVN record.
  • Wrong or non-existent account number. Nigerian account numbers are 10 digits; one wrong digit fails the check.
  • Wrong currency. US dollars sent to a naira account number, or the other way round.
  • Restricted account. The CBN directed in 2023 that funded accounts without a BVN or NIN be placed on "Post No Debit or Credit" from March 2024, as reported by TheCable. A restricted account may not accept the credit.
  • Outdated correspondent. Dollar wires reach Nigerian banks through US correspondent accounts, and an old correspondent may no longer accept them.
  • Unanswered compliance query. If a bank in the chain asks about the purpose and no answer comes, the wire can be returned.

How long a return takes

No rule fixes how long a Nigerian bank takes to send a wire back, and no bank page we read gives a figure. The return travels through each bank the payment passed through, so it can take as long as the outbound wire or longer. Citi, for example, says an outgoing international wire may take 2 to 5 business days; a return makes a similar journey in reverse, plus the time the Nigerian bank takes to decide.

What US law does fix is what your provider must do once you report a problem. Under 12 CFR 1005.33, you have 180 days from the disclosed date of availability to give notice of an error. The provider must investigate and decide within 90 days, and report the result within three business days of finishing.

What you get back

SituationWhat the federal rule says
Provider's error, or money not delivered by the disclosed dateRefund or resend at no extra cost, within one business day of your instructions or as soon as reasonably practicable; fees refunded for a late-delivery error
You gave an incorrect account number or bank identifierCan fall outside the error rule if the provider warned you, verified the bank identifier and tries to recover the funds; any refund due within three business days of the report
You cancel within 30 minutes and funds not yet picked up or depositedFull refund including fees, within three business days of your request

These rights apply to consumer remittance transfers from providers that make more than 500 a year, which includes most banks and money transfer companies. A returned wire can still come back short. Correspondent charges taken on the way out are rarely refunded, and banks may charge for handling the return. If the payment was converted to naira, it is converted back at the rate on the day it is returned, so you can gain or lose on the exchange.

Worked example

Example only; fees and rates are illustrative. Bola wires $1,500 to her brother's Zenith dollar account but uses his naira account number. Her bank charged $40 to send. The wire is returned. A correspondent kept $15 on the way out and the Nigerian bank deducts $20 for the return, so $1,465 comes back. Her loss is $40 + $15 + $20 = $75. Because she gave the wrong number, her bank does not have to refund its own fee.

Preventing the next return

Most returns trace back to details gathered in a hurry. Ask the recipient to send their bank's own instruction sheet for the currency you are sending, rather than typing details from memory, and confirm whether the account is naira or dollar. Check the account is active and not restricted. For a large amount, send a small test payment first. Our guide to SWIFT codes for Nigerian banks covers the bank identifiers.

Steps when a wire comes back

  1. Ask your bank for the reason code or explanation from the returning bank.
  2. Fix the cause first: name as the bank holds it, correct 10-digit number, right currency, current correspondent.
  3. Check the amount credited back against what you sent and ask for a breakdown of deductions.
  4. If you believe the provider was at fault, report an error in writing and keep the date.
  5. If the provider does not resolve it, you can escalate; see how to file a CFPB complaint.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account opened from the US holds US dollars and naira, with local details for each, and Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners. Payments to Nigerian accounts with Send use the account number and bank name, and the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. See also name mismatches with BVN records.

Questions people ask

Why was my wire to Nigeria returned?

The most common reasons are a name or account number that does not match, dollars sent to a naira account, a restricted account, or outdated correspondent details. Ask your bank for the returning bank's reason.

How long does it take to get a returned wire back from Nigeria?

No rule sets the time; the money travels back through each bank in the chain. Once you report an error, your provider has 90 days to investigate under federal rules.

Will I get the full amount back?

Often not. Correspondent charges and return fees may be deducted, and any currency conversion is reversed at the rate on the day of return.

Is my bank responsible if I gave the wrong account number?

Not fully. Under 12 CFR 1005.33(h), it must have warned you and must try to recover the funds, but it does not have to treat it as its own error.
