Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

US bank flagged you as a money mule: what next

Why US banks flag transfers to Nigeria as money-mule activity, what a SAR means, and the steps to take now to protect yourself and your records.

The short answer

If a US bank thinks your account moved other people's money to Nigeria, it can freeze or close the account and file a Suspicious Activity Report it is not allowed to tell you about. Stop moving any third-party money, keep every message and receipt that shows the purpose, answer the bank in writing and speak to a US lawyer before talking to law enforcement.

It usually starts with a pattern rather than a single payment. Several people paid into your US account, often by Zelle or cash deposit, and the money went out again within days to Nigeria. Perhaps you were collecting contributions for a family burial, or a friend asked you to receive money because their own account was restricted, or a new online acquaintance asked for help. To a bank's monitoring system those flows can look like the movement of other people's money, which is what the FBI calls a money mule.

What a money mule is, in the FBI's words

The FBI defines a money mule as "someone who transfers or moves illegally acquired money on behalf of someone else". Its page (last modified 19 August 2024) splits mules into three groups: unwitting (unaware they are part of a scheme), witting (ignoring obvious red flags) and complicit (knowingly taking part). It is blunt about the risk: acting as a money mule "is illegal and punishable, even if you aren't aware you're committing a crime". The charges it lists include wire fraud, bank fraud and money laundering, and it says a mule can be held personally liable for repaying victims' losses.

The warning signs on the same page will be familiar to many Nigerians abroad: unsolicited offers of easy money, an "employer" using free web email, requests to receive funds and forward them by wire, ACH or a money service business, permission to keep a cut, and online romantic contacts asking you to pass money on to strangers.

What the bank is doing behind the scenes

US banks must monitor for unusual activity and file Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs). The FFIEC examination manual says banks file on suspicious transactions aggregating $5,000 or more, within 30 calendar days of first detection, and that a bank may not tell anyone involved that a report was filed. That is why the bank's letter is often short and gives no detailed reason. Common outcomes are:

  • A hold on outgoing transfers or on the whole account while the bank reviews it.
  • Questions about who the senders are and why money went to Nigeria.
  • Closure of the account, usually with the remaining balance returned by cheque.
  • A report to a checking-account reporting company. The CFPB names Chex Systems and Early Warning Services and says banks report suspected fraud and involuntary closures.

A SAR is not a criminal charge. Still, you cannot see what the bank reported or whether anyone will follow it up, so act as if your records will be read.

How to respond, step by step

  1. Stop moving third-party money at once. Do not receive or forward any further payments for anyone, including relatives, until this is settled.
  2. Answer the bank's questions in writing, accurately. If the money was family contributions, say so and offer evidence: a WhatsApp message asking for contributions, a funeral programme, a hospital bill, receipts from the provider in Nigeria.
  3. Do not delete messages or close chats. They are your evidence of innocent purpose. Deleting them looks worse.
  4. If you were deceived, report it. The FBI says to report money mule scams to IC3 at ic3.gov. IC3 says to file "even if you are unsure".
  5. Talk to a US lawyer before giving any statement to law enforcement, and before signing anything the bank sends that admits wrongdoing. This guide is information, not legal advice.
  6. Request your ChexSystems report once the account is closed. The CFPB says you can get one free report a year from each nationwide checking-account reporting company and dispute errors with both the company and the bank.

The licensing trap many people do not see

Collecting cash from neighbours and sending it home for them, especially for a small fee or a better rate, can amount to running a money transmitting business. Under 18 U.S.C. 1960 it is a federal offence to run an unlicensed money transmitting business, punishable by a fine and up to five years in prison, and a business can be "unlicensed" whether or not the person knew a licence was required. If people want to send money to Nigeria, the safe answer is to point them to a licensed provider rather than pass the money through your own account.

Sending money home after a flag

If the account is closed, you will need a new account before you can fund most transfers. Our guide to sending money after a US bank closes your account covers the interim options. For future family collections, have each relative send directly to the person in Nigeria from their own account, or use a licensed provider each time; read the risks of using someone else's account before agreeing to any shortcut. The cross-border view of these scams is set out in money transfer scams targeting the diaspora.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account is a personal account in your own name, so it is not a way around a bank's concerns and should never be used for other people's money. What it does offer is a clear record: each transfer through Send shows the rate and fee before you approve, and you can produce a verifiable statement through receipts and statements powered by VerifyDoc.ai if you ever need to show where your own money went.

Questions people ask

Can a US bank close my account for sending money to Nigeria?

A bank can close an account when it sees activity it considers suspicious, and it is not allowed to tell you whether it filed a Suspicious Activity Report. Sending your own money to Nigeria through a licensed channel is legal; the concern is usually money from other people passing through your account.

Will I be arrested if my bank thinks I am a money mule?

A bank flag is not a criminal charge. The FBI says acting as a mule is illegal even if you did not know, so stop all third-party transfers, keep your records and speak to a US lawyer before giving any statement.

Is collecting family contributions for a funeral illegal?

Receiving gifts from relatives for a family purpose is not itself unlawful, but the pattern can be flagged. Keep evidence of the purpose, and avoid charging anyone a fee or rate for sending, which can look like unlicensed money transmission.

How do I get off ChexSystems after an account closure?

Request your free report, check what the bank reported, and dispute anything inaccurate with both ChexSystems and the bank. The CFPB says most negative information cannot stay longer than seven years.
