Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Updating your Nigerian passport after UK naturalisation

You have become British. Do you need to tell Nigeria, change your Nigerian passport or give it up? What the law says and the records worth updating.

The short answer

If you are Nigerian by birth, naturalising as British does not end your Nigerian citizenship and there is no step to update your Nigerian passport because of it. Keep it valid and renew it as normal; when you next apply at the High Commission, bring your British passport too, since its list asks dual nationals for their current passport.

The citizenship ceremony is done and the British passport has arrived. The next question many people ask is what happens to the green passport in the drawer. The answer depends on how you became Nigerian, and then on a handful of practical records, not on any formal notice to Nigeria.

Does becoming British end your Nigerian citizenship?

Section 28 of the 1999 Constitution says a person who is a Nigerian citizen otherwise than by birth forfeits Nigerian citizenship on acquiring or retaining another nationality of which they are not a citizen by birth. A citizen by birth is outside that rule. GOV.UK says the UK allows dual citizenship and tells applicants to check the other country's rules with its embassy.

How you are NigerianEffect of naturalising as British
By birth (born in Nigeria to a Nigerian parent, or abroad to a Nigerian parent)No forfeiture under section 28. Your Nigerian passport stays valid.
By registration, for example through marriageSection 28 can apply. Take advice before relying on the Nigerian passport.
By naturalisationSection 28 can apply, in the same way.

Our guide on whether Nigeria allows dual citizenship goes through these cases in detail. Everything below assumes you are Nigerian by birth.

Is there anything to update on the Nigerian passport?

Neither the NIS passports page nor the High Commission's pages list a procedure for recording a foreign naturalisation in a Nigerian passport. There is nothing to fill in because you became British. What does change is the paperwork at your next renewal:

  • The High Commission's list for fresh applications asks a dual national for the current passport, original and copy. Bring your British passport to any Nigerian passport appointment so the question does not hold you up.
  • Your NIN details must still match your Nigerian passport, so leave the Nigerian record in the same name.
  • If you took a new name when you naturalised, for example by deed poll, the High Commission says deed poll is not accepted for Nigerian passports, which accept name changes only through marriage or divorce.

That last point creates a real mismatch for some people: a British passport in one name, a Nigerian passport in another. It is legal on each side, but plan for it when booking flights and banking. See deed poll and Nigerian documents.

Travelling with two passports

GOV.UK's travel advice for Nigeria says British visitors need a visa obtained before travel, because visa on arrival is no longer available, and that British citizens returning to the UK need a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement. It does not say which passport a dual national should present to Nigerian immigration. In practice, a valid Nigerian passport means travelling as a Nigerian and not applying for a visa as a British visitor, which is why many dual nationals keep it renewed.

Leaving and entering the UK
Use the British passport, according to GOV.UK's requirement for returning British citizens.
Entering and leaving Nigeria
A valid Nigerian passport; otherwise a Nigerian visa in the British passport.
Booking flights
Use the name on the passport you will show at check-in.

Our guide to which passport to use when leaving the UK has the airline side.

If you are Nigerian by registration

A spouse who registered as Nigerian and then naturalises as British is the case section 28 was written for. Section 28(1) describes forfeiture as immediate for a non-birth citizen who acquires another nationality, with no grace period. If that is you, do not keep using the Nigerian passport on the assumption that nothing has changed; ask a Nigerian lawyer, and the High Commission, what your position is before you next travel on it.

Records worth updating after naturalisation

  1. UK side: GOV.UK's eVisa guidance asks people to keep their UKVI account details up to date while they rely on it. Once you are British, ask your employer, bank and landlord which document they now want to see on file.
  2. Nigerian banks: tell them about the new passport only if they ask for your current foreign ID; your BVN and NIN do not change.
  3. Nigerian passport: diary the expiry date and renew in good time; the diaspora fee is US$150 or US$230, as at NIS's August 2025 notice, plus the High Commission's £20 charge.
  4. Documents folder: keep the naturalisation certificate, both passports and your Nigerian birth certificate together.

The Home Office fee for adult naturalisation from 8 April 2026 is £1,709, with the £130 ceremony fee added, per its fees table; our citizenship cost guide covers the full budget. This page is information, not legal advice.

Where Pryme fits

A change of nationality does not change how you bank across the two countries. A Pryme account can be opened from any country, holds GBP and NGN with local details for each, and keeps your money in the currency it arrived in. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do I lose my Nigerian passport when I become British?

Not if you are Nigerian by birth. Section 28 of the Constitution removes citizenship only from people who are Nigerian otherwise than by birth.

Do I need to tell the Nigeria High Commission I am now British?

No official page lists any such notification. Bring your British passport to your next Nigerian passport appointment, since dual nationals are asked for it.

Can I travel to Nigeria on my Nigerian passport after naturalising?

Yes, if it is valid and you are Nigerian by birth. On a British passport you would need a Nigerian visa, GOV.UK says.

My British passport has a new name. Can I change my Nigerian passport to match?

Only if the change came through marriage or divorce. The High Commission does not accept deed poll.
