Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Running a money service business in the UK: HMRC registration

A UK remittance firm to Nigeria needs HMRC money laundering registration and FCA authorisation or registration. What each covers and the order.

The short answer

A UK business that transmits money, runs a bureau de change or cashes customers' cheques must register with HMRC for money laundering supervision, pass a fit and proper test, and must not trade until HMRC confirms the application. Money transmitters also need to be registered or authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority under the Payment Services Regulations 2017, so a Nigeria remittance start-up deals with two regulators, not one.

What counts as a money service business

HMRC's guidance on money service business (MSB) registration, last updated 18 August 2023, says you must register if your business acts as a bureau de change or currency exchange office, "transmits money, or any representation of money", or cashes cheques payable to your customers. It also lists intermediary payments made through telecoms or IT devices and utility and household bill payment services. A cash courier that only collects and delivers money does not need to register.

A business that takes pounds from customers in London and arranges for naira to be paid to families in Nigeria is transmitting money. So is a cargo or travel business that starts "helping" customers send funds on the side. If that is your plan, read the rules before you take the first payment; our guide to starting a cargo-to-Nigeria business is a separate activity with its own rules.

Public recordHMRC supervised business registerFinancial Services Register

HMRC's page says money transmitters "also have to be registered or authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority", and that a business already supervised by the FCA does not need to register with HMRC. The FCA's consumer guidance describes authorised payment institutions, which include firms providing money remittance abroad, and small payment institutions, which are subject to value limits. Which route suits you depends on your expected volumes; check the FCA's own application pages for the current thresholds rather than relying on an adviser's summary.

The HMRC registration

Do not trade before approval

HMRC says that if you applied after 10 January 2020, "you must not run a money service business until HMRC has confirmed that your application has been successful". Taking customer money while your application is pending is trading without registration.

Fit and proper test

Registration includes a fit and proper test unless you are only a bill payment service provider or a telecommunication, digital and IT payment service provider. Expect HMRC to look at the people who own and run the business. A criminal record or a history of regulatory problems can block an application.

Fees

HMRC charges registration fees and an annual fee on all premises you list. The amounts are on HMRC's separate money laundering supervision fees page; check it on the day you apply, as we have not quoted a figure here.

The public register

Once registered, your business appears on HMRC's supervised business register, a downloadable spreadsheet showing registration number, business name, trading name, first part of the postcode, date supervised and sector. GOV.UK (updated 19 October 2026) notes applicants are not shown until registered and that listing is not an endorsement. Banks and partners will check it.

Customer money and safeguarding

Payment firms must protect customer funds. The FCA announced on 7 August 2025 that new safeguarding rules take effect on 7 May 2026, with daily checks that the right amount is safeguarded, monthly reporting and annual audits (firms holding less than £100,000 of customer funds are exempt from the audit). The FCA also said funds held by payment and e-money firms are not directly protected by the FSCS. Build reconciliation into your operations from day one.

Worked example: the order of steps

Example: Adaeze plans a London remittance company sending pounds to naira payouts.

  1. Incorporate the company and register it for Corporation Tax (see registering a new company for Corporation Tax).
  2. Write anti-money laundering policies, customer due diligence steps and a safeguarding plan.
  3. Apply to the FCA for the payment services permission that fits her volumes.
  4. Register with HMRC for money laundering supervision unless the FCA supervises her for it, and wait for confirmation.
  5. Agree payout arrangements in Nigeria and confirm what licence her Nigerian partner holds.
  6. Only then take the first customer payment.

Accountancy firms face a similar supervision question; our guide to AML supervision for a new accountancy practice explains how that differs.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is not a remittance licence and cannot stand in for HMRC or FCA approval. For the business's own money, a Pryme Business Account holds pounds and naira with local details and keeps every action on record. The Compliance agent prepares checklists and reminders for renewals and reporting dates, for a person to review.

Questions people ask

Do I need to register with HMRC to send money to Nigeria as a business?

Yes, if your business transmits money for customers. HMRC says MSBs that transmit money must register for money laundering supervision unless the FCA already supervises them.

Is HMRC registration enough to run a remittance business?

No. HMRC's page says money transmitters also have to be registered or authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Can I start trading while my HMRC application is processed?

No. For applications made after 10 January 2020, HMRC says you must not run an MSB until it confirms your application has been successful.

How do I check if a money transfer business is registered?

Use HMRC's supervised business register on GOV.UK and the FCA Financial Services Register.
