Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Choosing a UK company name with Yoruba or Igbo words

Companies House ignores accents, so Ọlá and Ola may clash. The same-as rule, too-like objections, sensitive words and names that imply a government.

The short answer

You can register a UK company name in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa or any language, but Companies House treats accented letters as plain ones, so "Ọ̀là Foods Ltd" counts as the same as an existing "Ola Foods Ltd" and will be refused. Names also cannot use sensitive words such as "British" or "Institute" without approval, or suggest a false link with a foreign government.

Your language is allowed; the rules are about clashes and meaning

Nothing in Companies House's guidance bans names in Nigerian languages. Names like Adunni Kitchen Ltd, Nkiruka Care Ltd or Ìrè Consulting Ltd are all possible. What the guidance on incorporation and names (updated 19 October 2026) controls is whether the name clashes with an existing one, whether it uses restricted words, and whether it is offensive or misleading.

The same-as rule and diacritics

Two names are the "same as" each other if they are so similar the public is likely to be confused. When comparing names, Companies House:

  • treats accented letters as their plain equivalents (its own example: ‘ŘEAL COFFEE CAFÉ LTD’ is the same as ‘REAL COFFEE CAFE LTD’);
  • ignores endings such as Limited, Ltd, PLC and CIC;
  • ignores some web and country terms such as "co.uk" and "UK" after a space, full stop or @;
  • reads symbols as words, so "&" is AND and "£" is POUND;
  • counts only the first 60 characters.

This matters for Yoruba and Igbo, which use tone marks and dotted letters (ẹ, ọ, ṣ, ị, ụ). Under the rule, Ọ̀ṣun Beauty and Osun Beauty are compared as the same name. Search the register for the plain spelling before you fall in love with the accented one. The rule does not apply if the existing company is in your group or consents.

Can you use the accents at all?

The guidance says names may not include certain characters, signs, symbols or punctuation, and it does not say how non-Latin scripts are handled. Check Companies House's list of permitted characters before filing, and expect that some marks may not be accepted on the register. Your logo and website can still use the full spelling.

Too-like objections

Even a name that passes the same-as check can be challenged later as "too like" an existing one, for example if it differs by only a few characters or looks and sounds the same. The Secretary of State must order a change within 12 months of registration, and Companies House allows at least 28 days to make it. Companies House says complaints about trade mark infringement, passing off, implied association or similar activities cannot be considered in this process.

Example proposed nameExisting nameLikely issue
Ọlá Foods LtdOla Foods LimitedSame as (accents and "Limited" ignored)
Olaa Foods LtdOla Foods LimitedPossible too-like objection
Ola & Sons LtdOla and Sons LtdSame as (& read as AND)
Ola Foods UK LtdOla Foods LtdSame as ("UK" ignored)

Some words need approval from the Secretary of State; Companies House gives "British", "Institute" and "Tribunal" as examples, with full lists in the annexes to its guidance. Supporting evidence, such as a letter or email of non-objection from a specified body, goes with your application. A name such as "Nigerian Institute of Catering Ltd" would therefore need approval for "Institute" even though the Nigerian part is fine.

Names that suggest a false connection with a foreign government or an international organisation are also restricted. A private company calling itself "Federal Republic of Nigeria Trade Office Ltd" or anything suggesting it speaks for a Nigerian ministry or state government would run into this rule.

The same restrictions follow a Nigerian company that registers a UK branch. Companies House's overseas companies guidance (updated 25 September 2026) says the branch can use the company's corporate name or an alternative name, subject to the rules on offensive names, sensitive words, same-as names and restricted expressions, and that changing the name later uses form OS NM01 with a £30 fee.

Meaning matters

Names cannot be offensive or include words that would be an offence. Companies House staff may not know every Nigerian word, but complaints come from people who do. Check what your chosen word means across languages and dialects, including slang, before you file.

Steps before you file

  1. Write the name in plain letters with no accents and search the Companies House register.
  2. Check spellings that sound the same or differ by one letter.
  3. Check the sensitive words annexes for every word in the name.
  4. Make sure the name ends with Limited or Ltd (or the Welsh "cyfyngedig" or "cyf" for a Welsh company).
  5. Search the trade marks register too; a company name gives no brand protection on its own.

For a shop or brand name used alongside the company name, see trading name rules. If you are forming the company from Nigeria, start with registering a UK company while living in Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

Once the company is registered, a Pryme Business Account can be opened from any country in the company's registered name, with pound and naira details. See business accounts.

Questions people ask

Can I use Yoruba or Igbo words in a UK company name?

Yes. The rules are about clashes with existing names, restricted words and offensive or misleading names, not the language.

Does Companies House accept accents and dotted letters?

For comparison it treats accented letters as plain ones, so they do not make a name different. Check the permitted characters list before filing.

Why was my company name rejected as the same as another?

Companies House ignores endings like Ltd, some words like "UK", accents and symbols, and only the first 60 characters count. Two names that match after that are the same.

Can I use "Nigeria" or "Nigerian" in my company name?

Using the country name is not listed as banned in the guidance we read, but a name that suggests a false connection with a foreign government is restricted.
