Ten years, one trunk

2018OjirehPrime Card

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Can foreign nationals claim UIF in South Africa?

Contributing foreign nationals can claim UIF in South Africa. Who contributes, what you can claim, deadlines and the documents a Nigerian worker needs.

The short answer

Yes. The Department of Employment and Labour's UIF guide says "contributing foreign nationals qualify". If you worked 24 hours or more a month and UIF was deducted, you can claim unemployment, illness, maternity and other benefits with a valid passport or foreign national document, the employer's UI-19 form and your bank details, within the time limits below.

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is a short-term safety net paid for by workers and employers. For a Nigerian working in South Africa, the question is usually whether contributions taken from your payslip give you a right to claim. According to the Department of Employment and Labour's guide "Know your UIF rights and obligations", they do.

Who contributes and who can claim

  • All workers who work 24 hours or more a month must contribute, according to the guide.
  • The worker pays 1% of monthly pay and the employer adds 1%, a total of 2%. The guide gives an earnings ceiling of R17,712 a month for contributions; it is undated, so check the current ceiling on uFiling.
  • The guide answers the question "Do foreign nationals qualify?" with: "Yes, contributing foreign nationals qualify."
  • Excluded groups named in the guide include ministers, MPs, provincial legislators, municipal councillors, traditional leaders and workers paid only on commission.

The key word is "contributing". If your employer never registered you or never paid over the deductions, start by asking for proof of declarations. Check your payslip for the UIF line every month.

What you can claim and the deadlines

BenefitDeadline in the guide
Unemployment (including reduced working time)Within 12 months of the job ending
IllnessWithin 6 months of stopping work because of illness
MaternityBefore the birth or within 12 months after it
AdoptionWithin 12 months of the court's adoption order
Dependants (death of a contributor)Surviving spouse or life partner within 18 months of the death

Parental benefits also exist. The guide says a mother who gave birth claims maternity benefits rather than parental benefits.

How much you could receive

You earn one credit day for every four days worked, up to 365 days. Full credits take at least four years of contributions. Unemployment benefits are paid on a sliding scale of 38% to 60% of your average pay over the last six months, with lower earners getting the higher percentage. Maternity, illness, adoption and parental benefits are paid at a flat 66%, and maternity benefits run for up to 121 days.

Worked example from the guide: a daily benefit of R221.28, which is 38% of daily pay of R582.31. With 180 credit days, the total would be R221.28 x 180 = R39,830.40. Your own figure depends on your pay and credits.

Documents a Nigerian worker needs

  • A valid passport or foreign national document (South Africans use the 13-digit ID).
  • Form UI-19, the employer's declaration of your employment and its end.
  • A salary schedule completed by the employer.
  • Form UI-2.8 with your bank details, completed by your bank.
  • For maternity: UI-2.3, a doctor's certificate and the birth certificate. For illness: UI-3 and a medical certificate. For maternity, illness, adoption and parental claims, also UI-2.7 (remuneration declaration).

The guide says the employer must complete the employer forms; you cannot fill them in for them. If an employer refuses to issue a UI-19, go to a labour centre with your payslips and contract.

Steps to claim

  1. Ask your employer for the UI-19 and salary schedule as soon as your job ends.
  2. Keep your passport and permit valid: an expired document can stall the claim.
  3. Claim online on uFiling (ufiling.labour.gov.za) for unemployment, maternity, adoption and illness, or at a labour centre for parental and dependants claims, or if you need help.
  4. Give bank details for an account in your name. Nedbank, for example, says its standard accounts are open to people with a valid work or study permit or permanent residence; see opening a bank account with a Nigerian passport.
  5. Track payments on uFiling and keep copies of everything.

If your job and your permit end together

Many work visas are tied to a specific employer, so losing the job can affect your right to stay. The UIF guide does not say whether a claim continues if you leave South Africa, or whether benefits can be paid while your permit is being renewed. Ask at a labour centre before you travel, and take your UI-19, payslips and passport with you. Immigration questions belong with the Department of Home Affairs; this article is information, not advice.

Where Pryme fits

UIF is paid into a South African bank account. If part of it goes to family in Nigeria, you can send money through Pryme; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. For the permit side of banking, see accounts frozen after a permit expires.

Questions people ask

Can a foreigner claim UIF in South Africa?

Yes. The Department of Employment and Labour says contributing foreign nationals qualify.

How long do I have to claim UIF after losing my job?

Within 12 months of the job ending, according to the department's guide.

Can I claim UIF with a passport?

Yes. The guide accepts a valid passport or foreign national document in place of the South African ID.

Can I claim UIF if I resigned?

The guide does not say. Ask at a labour centre before you resign.
