Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Bank account frozen because my permit expired in SA: what now

Why SA banks restrict accounts when a visa or permit expires, what to bring to get it lifted, and how to keep paying rent and sending money meanwhile.

The short answer

South African banks open accounts for foreign nationals on the basis of a valid passport and a valid visa or permit, so when the permit on file expires the bank's records no longer meet its own requirements and it may restrict the account. To get it lifted, take your renewed visa or permit and passport to a branch; if your renewal is still pending, ask whether the bank will accept proof of the pending application, and get its answer in writing.

Why banks restrict accounts

When a South African bank opens an account for a Nigerian, it verifies identity under FICA using a valid passport and a valid visa or permit. Capitec's foreign national page, for example, lists both as requirements. Once the permit on file expires, the bank holds an expired document for a client it must keep verified. Banks deal with this in different ways: some send reminders and restrict the account after a deadline; others place a hold on debits or on international payments while still allowing salary to come in. None of the bank pages we opened set out the exact process, so ask your own bank how it handles expiry.

A restriction is an administrative step, not an accusation. It usually lifts once the bank has a valid document on file.

What a restriction can look like

  • Card declined, or app login works but payments fail.
  • International payments and forex blocked first, local transfers later.
  • Incoming salary credited but withdrawals stopped.
  • A message or email asking you to visit a branch with updated documents.

What to bring

Your situationWhat to take to the branchWhat to ask
Renewed visa or permit issuedPassport and new visa or permit (originals)Update my profile and lift the restriction today
Renewal applied for, not yet decidedPassport, expired permit, proof of your submitted application and paymentWill you accept proof of a pending application, and for how long?
New passport as wellNew and old passports, permitUpdate both passport and permit details
Changed permit typePassport and new permit, new proof of incomeDo my account features change with this permit?

If you applied through VFS Global, the visa application centre that handles Home Affairs applications, keep the submission receipt and any appointment or tracking confirmation. Whether a bank accepts these while an outcome is pending is the bank's decision, and we found no bank page that states its policy, so ask, and ask for the answer in writing or by email.

Steps to unfreeze

  1. Phone the bank or check the app message to confirm the reason for the restriction.
  2. Book a branch visit if the bank offers it, and bring originals plus copies.
  3. Ask the consultant to note on your profile what you submitted and the date.
  4. Ask how long the update takes to reach the system, and test the card before you leave.
  5. If it is not lifted, ask for a reference number and use the bank's complaints process; keep the written reply.

Keeping your life running meanwhile

A restricted account is most painful when rent, school fees or a family payment to Nigeria is due. Practical ways to cushion it:

  • Ask your employer whether salary can be paid to a second account for a month, if you have one.
  • Tell your landlord early, with proof of your renewal application.
  • Pause debit orders that would bounce, and reinstate them after the account is restored.
  • Do not move large sums through friends' accounts; it can raise more questions later.
  • Keep a copy of your pending application on your phone for police or employer queries.

If the bank decides to close the account

Occasionally a bank closes rather than restricts an account, for example when a permit has been expired for a long time or the bank's records cannot be updated. If that happens, ask for the closure notice in writing and for the date it takes effect. Ask how the remaining balance will be paid out: normally to another account in your own name. Get a closing statement for your records, because you may need it for SARS, a landlord or a visa application. Move debit orders, salary and any card subscriptions to the new account before the closure date so payments do not bounce. If you think the closure is wrong, use the bank's complaints process first and keep the reference number.

Avoiding it next time

  1. Diary your permit expiry date at least three months ahead.
  2. Apply for renewal early; the earlier you have an outcome, the less time the account sits with an expired permit.
  3. Update the bank the week your new permit is issued, not when it chases you.
  4. Keep your Nigerian passport valid too; our guide to passport renewal at the Johannesburg consulate explains the steps.
  5. Read FICA documents for foreign nationals so you know what each institution holds on file.

For Capitec specifically, see our Capitec foreign national guide.

Where Pryme fits

Having money split across more than one account helps when one is restricted. A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from any country with your Nigerian identity documents and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, so family support to Nigeria can continue with Send, showing the rate and the fee before you approve. It does not replace a rand account for SA bills. Outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Why did my bank freeze my account when my permit expired?

Banks verify foreign nationals with a valid passport and a valid visa or permit. When the permit expires, the bank may restrict the account until it has a valid document on file.

Will my bank accept a VFS receipt?

It is up to each bank, and none of the bank pages we checked states a policy. Ask your bank whether it accepts proof of a pending application and get its answer in writing.

How long does it take to unfreeze an account after updating my permit?

No bank page we checked gives a time. Ask the branch to update your profile while you are there and test your card before leaving.

Can I still receive my salary if my account is restricted?

It depends on the bank and the type of restriction. Ask what is blocked; some restrictions stop withdrawals but not deposits.
