Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

FICA documents for foreign nationals in South Africa explained

What FICA proof of identity and address means for a Nigerian in South Africa, why banks still ask, and what usually counts as proof of address.

The short answer

FICA is the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, which requires banks and other institutions to identify and verify clients. For a Nigerian in South Africa, proof of identity means a valid passport plus a valid visa or permit. Proof of address is no longer always compulsory (Capitec, for example, says it is not needed to open an account), but many institutions still ask, and a recent utility bill, lease or bank statement in your name is the usual evidence.

What FICA is

FICA is the shorthand South Africans use for the Financial Intelligence Centre Act and the checks it requires. Banks, insurers, investment firms, estate agents and others must know who their clients are and keep records, to help detect money laundering and fraud. When a bank says "we need to FICA you" it means it needs to identify and verify you and keep copies of the evidence. The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) is the body that oversees this.

FICA is not one fixed list of documents. In practice each institution sets its own requirements based on how it assesses risk, which is why one bank may want proof of address and another may not, and why a broker may ask for more than a bank.

Proof of identity for a Nigerian

A South African shows a green barcoded ID, smart ID card or SA passport. A foreign national cannot, so institutions ask for:

  • A valid passport. Capitec's foreign national page asks for a valid passport; an expired Nigerian passport is not accepted as proof of identity.
  • A valid visa or permit. This shows you are lawfully in South Africa, and its type can decide what the account can do.
  • Your passport number on every form, exactly as printed, because it becomes the number institutions use to match you.

Capitec's older FICA page (May 2017) listed a valid foreign passport with valid permanent residence for foreign nationals, plus a salary slip or employer letter. Its current foreign national page lists more permit types, including work, business, study, retired person's and visitor's section 11(6). Institutions update their rules, so check the current page.

Proof of address: what has changed

For years South Africans had to bring a utility bill to open almost anything. Capitec's FICA page says you no longer need proof of address to open an account or apply for credit, though you may be asked for supporting documents. Other institutions may still ask, particularly for investment accounts, larger credit or where their risk rules require it.

When proof of address is asked for, these are commonly accepted. The institution decides, so ask before you go:

DocumentUsually acceptable ifCommon problem
Municipal or utility billIn your name, recent, showing the street addressBills often in the landlord's name
Signed lease agreementCurrent, signed by you and the landlordExpired lease or unsigned copy
Bank statement from another bankRecent and showing your addressAddress not printed on app statements
Letter from employerOn letterhead, signed, with your addressSome institutions want it recent
Affidavit with the address holder's billWhen you live with someone elseNeeds the other person's ID and bill

If you share a flat or rent a room, the affidavit route is common: the person whose name is on the bill confirms you live there, and you bring their bill and ID copy. Ask the institution whether it accepts this before you get the affidavit sworn.

Proof of income and source of funds

Many institutions also ask how you earn your money, especially for foreign nationals. Capitec makes several features depend on it, including international payments and forex. Payslips, an employer letter, a bursary letter or business records are the usual evidence. For larger transfers abroad, your bank may ask about the source of the specific funds, which is different from general proof of income; keep records of savings, property sales or gifts.

FICA requests and scams

Because everyone in South Africa is used to being asked for FICA documents, fraudsters use the word too. A message saying your account will be closed unless you "update FICA" through a link, or a caller asking for your passport scan and a one-time PIN, should be treated as suspect. Genuine requests can be checked by logging into your banking app directly, phoning the number on the back of your card, or visiting a branch. Never share a one-time PIN or app password with anyone, whoever they say they are. If you have already sent documents to a stranger, tell your bank so it can watch for accounts opened in your name.

Keeping your FICA up to date

  1. Tell each institution when your visa or permit is renewed, and bring the new document.
  2. Update your passport details when you get a new Nigerian passport.
  3. Update your address when you move; if your post goes to the old address you may miss requests to re-verify.
  4. Respond to re-verification requests from the app or by email, but check they are genuine by logging in directly, not by clicking links.
  5. Keep scanned copies of passport, permit and income documents ready.

When documents lapse, accounts can be restricted; see account frozen because a permit expired. To open your first account, see opening an SA account with a Nigerian passport and the Capitec requirements.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from any country with your Nigerian identity documents. Your money is protected in the app by an authenticator app and transaction PIN, not SMS codes (security). Outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

What are FICA documents for foreigners in South Africa?

A valid passport and a valid visa or permit for identity, often proof of income, and sometimes proof of address, depending on the institution.

Is proof of address still required for FICA?

Not always. Capitec says it no longer needs proof of address to open an account, though it may ask for supporting documents. Other institutions may still ask.

What can I use as proof of address if bills are not in my name?

A signed lease, a bank statement showing your address, an employer letter, or an affidavit from the person whose name is on the bill, if the institution accepts it.

Do I need to update FICA when my permit is renewed?

Yes. Take the renewed visa or permit to each institution so your records stay current.
