Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Your transfer arrived as dollars, not naira: what now?

Why money you sent can land in a Nigerian domiciliary account in dollars, what the recipient can do with it, and how to send naira next time.

The short answer

A transfer usually lands in dollars because it went bank to bank by SWIFT to a domiciliary account, or because the account number given was the recipient's dom account; since 2024, and firmly from 1 May 2026, licensed transfer firms must pay retail remittances in naira. The recipient can keep the dollars, sell them to naira through their bank, or transfer them on; under the CBN FX Manual 2026 ordinary dom account holders have unrestricted access to their funds.

You expected your relative to receive naira; the bank shows dollars in their domiciliary (dom) account instead. Nothing is lost. This page explains why it happens and what the recipient can do, as at October 2026. It is information, not financial advice.

Why it happens

  • You sent a SWIFT wire to a dom account. A dollar wire from your bank to a Nigerian dom account arrives in dollars. The CBN's naira-only rules apply to remittances paid by licensed transfer firms (IMTOs), and the March 2026 circular summary is silent on bank-to-bank SWIFT (Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie, March 2026).
  • You used the dom account number. Nigerian banks give dom accounts their own account numbers. If the recipient gave you that number by mistake, a dollar payment lands there.
  • An older transfer. Before 2024, IMTOs could credit domiciliary accounts. A CBN directive reported in February 2024 moved IMTO payouts to naira only (TheCable), and from 1 May 2026 dollar dom credits were removed for retail IMTO transfers (Techeconomy, March 2026).

What the recipient can do

Keep the dollars

The CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, as reported by TheNigeriaLawyer (2 June 2026), gives ordinary dom account holders "unfettered and unrestricted access" to their funds, with no withdrawal cap stated, and no need to disclose source of funds for deposits. Dollars can be held for a future payment abroad, such as school fees.

Sell them for naira

The recipient can ask their bank to convert the dollars and credit their naira account. The bank applies its own rate, so ask for the rate before agreeing, and compare it with the official NFEM rate on the CBN website. See NFEM rate vs app rates.

Transfer the dollars on

Dom account holders can make telegraphic transfers of up to $10,000 a day under the 2026 manual (TheCable, 3 June 2026; Pavestones, June 2026). Bank charges for outward transfers apply.

Withdraw dollar cash

For an ordinary dom account, cash access is unrestricted under the 2026 manual as reported, though banks set their own branch arrangements and charges. Cash withdrawal from export-proceeds accounts is not permitted. The Nigeria library covers dollar cash withdrawals in detail.

Is the money safe in a dom account?

A domiciliary account is a normal bank account held in foreign currency, and the money is the account holder's. The NDIC pages checked for this guide do not say how foreign-currency deposits are treated for deposit insurance; ask the bank, and read NDIC cover and dom accounts before leaving a large balance there.

What to tell the recipient's bank

If the dollars were meant as naira support, the recipient should explain that to the bank when asking for conversion, and keep your transfer confirmation in case the bank asks about the source or purpose. Under the 2026 manual as reported, deposits into ordinary dom accounts need no source-of-funds disclosure, but banks still ask questions on larger or unusual credits as part of their own checks.

Keeping records

Keep the SWIFT confirmation, any MT103 your bank provides, and the recipient's statement showing the credit and the conversion. If the money was a gift, school fees or support for a dependant, a short note of its purpose made at the time is easier than reconstructing it later, for example if a tax office or a court asks.

Choosing between them

If the recipient needsUsually best
Naira for rent, food or school in NigeriaConvert at the bank, after checking the rate
To pay something abroad laterKeep the dollars
To pass money to another person's dom accountTransfer, noting charges
Cash dollars for travelWithdraw, after checking the branch's rules

Worked example

Example only, with round rates that are not today's. You wired $1,000 to your father's dom account. His bank offers ₦980 per dollar when the NFEM rate is ₦1,000: ₦980,000, or ₦20,000 below the official rate. A remittance app quoting ₦990 after its fee would have delivered ₦990,000 straight into his naira account. Next time, sending through a licensed transfer firm to the naira account avoids the second conversion.

Sending naira next time

  1. Ask the recipient for their naira account number, not the dom number.
  2. Use a licensed IMTO or your provider's naira payout, which must pay in naira.
  3. If you need to send dollars, say so explicitly, and use the dom account details; see sending dollars to a dom account.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme holds USD and NGN side by side, so you can choose: Swap to naira first, with the rate and the fee shown before you approve, or send dollars. See the multicurrency account. Outside Nigeria, these activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Why did my transfer to Nigeria arrive in dollars?

Most often because it was a SWIFT wire to a domiciliary account, or the dom account number was used. Licensed transfer firms must now pay retail remittances in naira.

Can my relative convert dollars in a dom account to naira?

Yes, through their bank at the bank's rate. Ask for the rate first and compare it with the CBN's NFEM rate.

Can dollars in a dom account be withdrawn in cash?

For ordinary dom accounts, the 2026 FX Manual as reported gives unrestricted access; banks set branch arrangements. Export-proceeds accounts cannot pay cash.

Can Western Union pay dollars into a dom account in 2026?

Not for retail remittances. From 1 May 2026, IMTO retail transfers are paid in naira only.
