Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Paying for a traditional wedding in Nigeria from the UK

How to budget for a traditional wedding in Nigeria from the UK, pay vendors directly with receipts, and handle bride price items with care.

The short answer

Pay each wedding vendor in Nigeria directly into an account in its own name, against a written quote, with a deposit first and the balance close to the date. Ask the bride's family for the bride price list in writing and keep a receipt for every payment so both families can see what was paid.

A traditional wedding in Nigeria is usually planned by two families on the ground and paid for, in large part, by a couple who live thousands of miles away. That gap creates the main risks: money sent to the wrong person, vendors paid twice, and a bride price list that grows after the money has gone. This guide sets out what is commonly paid for, how to pay vendors from the UK with a clear record, and how to handle the bride price items with respect and without confusion.

What a traditional wedding commonly costs money for

Customs differ widely between Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Edo, Efik, Ijaw and other families, and between one family and the next. Treat this as a planning list rather than a rule:

  • Bride price and list items: the bride's family usually gives the groom's family a list. It can include a token cash sum, drinks, fabrics, foodstuffs, jewellery and gifts for named relatives.
  • Introduction or knocking ceremony: often a smaller event before the main day, with its own drinks and gifts.
  • Venue, canopies and chairs.
  • Catering and drinks for the expected guest count.
  • Master of ceremonies, alaga or family spokespersons, where used.
  • Photography and video, music or a band, decor and souvenirs.
  • Outfits for the couple and, often, aso ebi for family and friends.
  • Travel and stay for the couple and any guests from abroad.

Ask the family to give you the bride price list in writing, even as a photo of a handwritten list. It protects everyone: the bride's family knows what was agreed, and the groom's side can show what was delivered.

A worked example of a naira budget

Example only. These figures are invented to show the arithmetic. Real prices vary by city, guest count and vendor, so get quotes in writing.

Item (example)Example cost (₦)
Venue and canopies2,000,000
Catering and drinks for 300 guests4,500,000
Bride price list items (bought locally)1,500,000
MC and spokespersons600,000
Photography and video900,000
Music700,000
Decor and souvenirs800,000
Contingency (about 10%)1,100,000
Total12,100,000

The items before contingency add up to ₦11,000,000; 10% of that is ₦1,100,000, giving ₦12,100,000. A contingency line matters because prices often move between the first quote and the event, and because extra guests arrive.

Paying vendors from the UK without losing track

The safest pattern is to pay each vendor directly into an account in the vendor's or business's name, rather than sending lump sums to a relative to pay on your behalf. Where a relative must handle cash on the day, give them a fixed float and ask for receipts.

  1. Get a written quote or invoice from each vendor, with the business name and the account name that will receive payment.
  2. Agree a payment schedule: a deposit, then a balance close to the date. Avoid paying in full months ahead unless there is a written refund term.
  3. Check the account name before you send. Nigerian banks show the account holder's name when the account number is entered; if it does not match the vendor, stop and ask.
  4. Pay from one account, so all payments sit in one statement.
  5. Ask for a receipt after every payment and keep them in one folder with the quotes.

From 1 January 2026, Nigeria applies a ₦50 stamp duty on electronic transfers of ₦10,000 or more, deducted from the sender, according to bank notices reported at the time. Several vendor payments will each attract it, which is small but worth knowing when you reconcile.

Handling the bride price items with care

The bride price is a family matter first, and money is only part of it. A few practical points help:

  • Ask who on the groom's side will physically present the items, and send their share to them early enough to shop.
  • Ask whether some items can be bought as a cash equivalent, which some families accept and others do not.
  • Keep the token cash sum separate from shopping money, so it is clear which is which.
  • Photograph the items before the ceremony as a record for both families.

If you are also marrying under UK law, or later applying for a UK spouse visa, a customary ceremony alone may not be enough evidence. See proof of a customary marriage for a UK spouse visa and the cost of the introduction and bride price. The Nigeria High Commission in London lists a Certificate of No Impediment to marry at £20 service plus £15 processing, as at its consular page in October 2026.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account lets you hold pounds and naira in one place, convert with Swap when you decide (the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve) and send to each vendor's Nigerian account. Every payment can produce a verifiable receipt through our partner VerifyDoc.ai, which helps when two families need to see what was paid.

Questions people ask

How do I pay a wedding caterer in Nigeria from the UK?

Get a written quote, confirm the account name shown by the Nigerian bank matches the caterer's business, pay a deposit and then the balance close to the date, and ask for a receipt each time.

Should I send all the wedding money to my mum or a sibling?

It is easier to track if you pay vendors directly. If a relative handles cash on the day, give a fixed float and ask for receipts.

Is the bride price paid in cash or items?

Both are common. The bride's family usually gives a list. Ask for it in writing and ask whether any items can be given as a cash equivalent.

Is a traditional wedding enough for a UK spouse visa?

Not always. The Home Office looks for reliable evidence of the marriage. Read our guide on customary marriage proof before you apply.
