Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Codes & registration

TIN for foreigners and foreign companies in Nigeria

When a non-resident person or foreign company needs a Nigerian Tax ID, how a foreign-owned subsidiary gets one, and what NIPC adds.

The short answer

A foreign company needs a Nigerian Tax ID if it supplies goods or services to Nigerian customers or is managed from Nigeria; one earning only passive income may not. A foreign-owned company incorporated in Nigeria gets its TIN from its CAC registration, and must also register with NIPC (₦150,000 as at 2026). Foreign individuals earning income in Nigeria register as taxable persons, usually with their state tax authority.

Who needs a Nigerian Tax ID under the 2025 rules

The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 requires every taxable person, meaning anyone carrying on a trade, business or other economic activity to earn income, to register and obtain a Tax ID. Explainers on the Act published in November 2025 set 1 January 2026 as the date by which taxable persons should be registered. The Act also brings government bodies into the net, while individuals who earn nothing are not required to register.

For foreigners the question is not nationality but activity and residence. Three situations come up again and again, and each has a different answer.

  • A non-resident company that supplies goods or services to customers in Nigeria must register, even if it has no office here.
  • A foreign entity earning only passive income from Nigeria (dividends, interest, royalties or rent) may not need to register, but it must still provide the information the tax authority asks for. Tax on such income is usually handled through withholding.
  • A foreign company that is effectively managed or controlled from Nigeria is treated as resident and must comply as a Nigerian company would.

The federal tax authority is now the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), which replaced the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Many guides, forms and older certificates still say FIRS, and the Joint Tax Board (JTB) and state internal revenue services also issue and validate tax identities. Registration is free; anyone asking a foreign investor to pay for a TIN itself is selling a service, not the number.

Foreign-owned companies incorporated in Nigeria

Most foreign investors operate through a Nigerian subsidiary. The Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 (section 78) requires a foreign company that wants to carry on business in Nigeria to incorporate a local entity, unless it obtains an exemption. Once that company is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), its TIN is generated from the CAC registration details, so the RC number effectively becomes its Tax ID.

Being on the CAC register is only the first step for a company with foreign shareholders. The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) says every enterprise with foreign participation must register with it under section 20 of the NIPC Act. As at its 2026 fee schedule, NIPC charges ₦150,000 (non-refundable) and states a 48 working-hour turnaround, with annual renewal. NIPC's FAQ also notes that a business permit from the Ministry of Interior is needed for any enterprise with foreign equity, and points companies to the NRS for their TIN.

Corporate bank accountYour chosen bankAccount in the company's name; bank asks for the Tax ID

See our guide to CAC rules for foreign-owned companies for the share capital debate. In December 2023 the CAC announced a ₦100 million fully paid-up capital requirement for companies with foreign participation and then paused implementation pending a revised notice, so check the current CAC position before you incorporate.

Non-resident companies with no Nigerian entity

A foreign company that sells to Nigerian customers without a local subsidiary still falls within the registration duty if it is supplying goods or services into Nigeria. In practice this covers digital services sold online as well as consultancy billed from abroad. The registration is made with the NRS rather than with the CAC, because there is no Nigerian company to register. The NRS portal and help desk set out the current form and the documents it expects; typically these include the foreign certificate of incorporation, details of directors and an authorised contact. We could not confirm the full non-resident document list on an official page in October 2026, so check it with the NRS before you file.

Foreign individuals living or working in Nigeria

For individuals, the 2025 approach is that the National Identification Number (NIN) serves as the Tax ID, and any TIN you already hold stays valid. A foreign national who is resident in Nigeria and earns income here, for example as an employee or consultant, is a taxable person in the same way as a Nigerian. Personal income tax is administered by the state where you are resident, so your employer's payroll team or the state internal revenue service is usually the first stop.

Foreigners also meet the Tax ID question when opening a bank account. A 2023 Mondaq review of bank requirements found that foreigners must be resident to open an account, with a residence permit and proof of a Nigerian address, and that all account holders at Nigerian banks need a BVN, foreigners included. Since banks must now ask taxable persons for a Tax ID before they can operate accounts, expect the bank to request it during onboarding. Our guide on BVN for foreigners living in Nigeria covers the identity side.

What to check first

  1. Decide which situation you are in: Nigerian subsidiary, non-resident supplier, passive income only, or resident individual.
  2. For a subsidiary, finish CAC incorporation and confirm the TIN appears against the company (see how to check a TIN).
  3. Register with NIPC and apply for the business permit if the company has foreign shareholders.
  4. For a non-resident supplier, contact the NRS for the current non-resident registration process before you invoice Nigerian customers.
  5. Keep certificates and the Tax ID together; banks, customers and government buyers will ask for them.
  6. Treat this as information, not tax advice; a Nigerian tax adviser should confirm your position.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Personal and Business accounts can be opened from any country. A Pryme Business Account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each, and money stays in the currency it arrived in until you choose to convert with Swap. Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN. You will still need your company's Tax ID for onboarding, as with any Nigerian account.

Questions people ask

Can a foreigner get a TIN in Nigeria?

Yes. A foreign individual who earns income in Nigeria is a taxable person and registers like anyone else; a foreign company gets a TIN through its Nigerian subsidiary's CAC registration or, if it supplies Nigeria from abroad, by registering with the NRS.

Does a foreign company need a TIN if it only receives dividends from Nigeria?

Possibly not. Explainers on the 2025 Act say entities earning only passive income may not need to register, though they must still provide information, and withholding tax is usually deducted at source.

How much does it cost to get a TIN for a foreign-owned company?

Tax registration itself is free. Separate costs include CAC incorporation and NIPC registration, which was ₦150,000 as at NIPC's 2026 schedule.

Is FIRS TIN the same as NRS TIN?

Yes in practice. The NRS replaced FIRS, and TINs issued before the change remain valid.
