Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Student hostel near a Nigerian university: investing from the UK

Investing in a private student hostel near a Nigerian university from the UK: demand, land and planning approvals, rent by session and management.

The short answer

Private hostels near Nigerian universities can fill well because campus bed spaces are limited and allocated by first-come portals. The investment works only if the land title is clean, the building has state planning approval, and someone local manages rent collection, rules, power and repairs each session. Treat any yield as a naira return with a clear allowance for empty beds and wear.

Student housing is a popular diaspora idea: thousands of students, too few campus rooms, and parents willing to pay for safety and steady power. The idea is sound in many university towns. The execution is where hostels succeed or fail, and running one from the UK adds a layer of distance to every problem.

Reading the demand

Universities ration their own rooms. UNIZIK's Student Affairs guide (April 2026) describes a portal where students create an account, pay a service charge, reserve a hostel, floor, room and bed, and pay through Remita on a first-come, first-served basis, with unpaid reservations released. TheCable reported in February 2026 that students at UNN faced reported hostel fee rises and that the university's consolidated service charges had to be paid before a bed space. Rationing like this pushes many students to private hostels off campus.

That does not mean every hostel fills. Before buying land, find out:

  • how many students the university admits and how many campus beds exist (ask the Student Affairs office or check university bulletins);
  • which areas students actually live in, and how they get to campus;
  • what existing private hostels charge per bed per session, and how full they are at the start and the end of the session;
  • whether the university plans new hostels through partnerships, which could add supply;
  • whether strikes or calendar changes have left hostels empty for months in recent years.

Land, title and approvals

A hostel is a commercial use in many planning systems. Check that the land is zoned for it and that the title is in order before paying. Approval routes differ by state:

  • Lagos: Nairametrics reported that from 1 April 2026 planning permits are handled online through the Electronic Planning Permit Processing System.
  • Kano: the state government's building permit and property registration guide (December 2022) names KNUPDA for building permits and lists C of O processing fees of ₦10,000 for residential and ₦20,000 for commercial property, and a search report at ₦5,000.
  • Elsewhere: ask the state ministry of lands or physical planning agency for its current permit process and fees, in writing.

For title checks, the Nigeria library covers land title checks in detail, and the same principles apply in any university town.

Design choices that affect income

  • Rooms for two students usually earn more per square metre than singles, but parents of first-year students often prefer fewer roommates.
  • Reliable power and water are what students and parents ask about first. Budget for solar or generator backup and a borehole.
  • Separate kitchens or cooking areas reduce fire risk. Some universities have rules on cooking in their own hostels; ask what private hostels nearby do.
  • A fence, gate and caretaker's room are the basics of security.

A worked example of the returns

Example only: 24 bed spaces in 12 twin rooms, built for ₦120,000,000 on land already owned, charging ₦500,000 per bed per session.

Line (example)Amount per session
Full rent: 24 beds × ₦500,000₦12,000,000
Collected at 90% occupancy₦10,800,000
Caretaker, ₦100,000 a month−₦1,200,000
Shared power and water, ₦150,000 a month−₦1,800,000
Repairs and replacements−₦600,000
Security, ₦80,000 a month−₦960,000
Net income₦6,240,000

That is about 5.2% net on build cost in this example, before tax, land value or any long closure. A session-long strike that leaves half the beds empty would roughly halve collected rent while most costs carry on.

Running it from the UK

  1. Appoint a manager or agent with a written contract covering rent collection, tenant rules, repairs and reporting.
  2. Collect rent into a business account, never the manager's personal account, and issue a receipt for every payment.
  3. Use a written tenancy for each student, signed by a parent or guardian where the student is young.
  4. Set clear house rules on visitors, noise and cooking, and say how breaches are handled.
  5. Review occupancy, arrears and repairs every month, and visit or send someone independent each session.

Records and tax

Keep the hostel's money separate from your personal funds from the first day. A company or registered business name, its own bank account, a tenancy file per student and a receipt for every payment make the business easier to manage, value and eventually sell. Rental income from Nigerian property is taxable in Nigeria, and if you are UK resident it must also be reported in the UK, with credit for Nigerian tax under the treaty where it applies; see UK tax on Nigerian rental income. This is information, not tax advice.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account can be opened from the UK. Virtual accounts can give each tenant or room its own account number for rent, so payments match themselves, and invoicing sends session bills. Every payment can carry a verifiable receipt via VerifyDoc.ai. For a comparison with ordinary flats, see running a Lagos rental from the UK.

Questions people ask

Is a student hostel a good investment in Nigeria?

It can be where campus beds are scarce and the hostel is close, safe and well run. Check demand, title, approvals and management before building, and allow for empty beds during strikes.

How much do students pay for private hostels?

It varies by town and standard. Ask existing private hostels near the university for their per-bed, per-session charges and how full they are.

Do I need approval to build a hostel near a university?

Yes. You need a building or planning permit from the state agency, and the land use should allow it. Lagos now handles permits online.

How do I collect hostel rent from the UK?

Through a business account in the hostel's name, ideally with a separate account number per tenant, and a receipt for every payment.
