Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Starting a trucking company as a Nigerian immigrant

The federal steps to start hauling freight for hire: USDOT number, MC operating authority, the $300 fee and the $750,000 insurance minimum.

The short answer

To haul other people's freight across state lines for pay you need a USDOT number and FMCSA operating authority (an MC number), applied for together through FMCSA's Unified Registration System. Permanent authority costs $300, non-refundable, and FMCSA says new applications take about 20 to 25 business days. Before authority is active you must file proof of insurance: for general freight in vehicles of 10,001 lbs or more, at least $750,000 of bodily injury and property damage cover.

Who needs what

FMCSA, the federal motor carrier regulator, separates two things that new owners often mix up. A USDOT number identifies your company for safety purposes. Operating authority, shown by an MC number, is permission to act as a for-hire carrier. FMCSA says you need authority, 'in addition to a USDOT number', if you transport regulated commodities owned by others for a fee in interstate commerce, or transport passengers interstate for compensation.

Your planUSDOT numberMC operating authority
Hauling customers' freight across state lines for payYesYes
Hauling your own goods only (private carrier)Usually, depending on vehicle and routeNo for-hire authority needed
Hauling within one state onlyDepends on your state's rulesNot federal authority; check your state
Brokering loads without trucksSeparate broker authorityBroker authority, with its own requirements

Being an immigrant does not bar you from owning a carrier. You will need a tax ID for the company, and drivers, including you, need the right commercial driver's licence from your state. The company structure is covered in forming an LLC in Texas and the tax ID in getting an EIN without an SSN.

The federal steps and fees

  1. Form the company and get its EIN, so the registration is in the business's name.
  2. Register in FMCSA's Unified Registration System (URS). FMCSA says first-time applicants, who have never had a USDOT number, must use URS.
  3. Request the type of operating authority you need in the same application.
  4. Pay the fee: $300 for permanent authority, according to FMCSA's page updated April 2026. Reinstating authority is $80 and a name change $14. FMCSA does not refund application fees.
  5. Have your insurer file proof of cover with FMCSA, and complete the other filings FMCSA's checklist lists, such as designating process agents.
  6. Wait for processing: FMCSA says new URS applications may take 20 to 25 business days. Do not haul for-hire interstate loads until your authority is active.

Insurance: the minimum and the real cost

FMCSA's financial responsibility table sets minimum bodily injury and property damage (BIPD) cover by what you carry:

Carrier typeMinimum BIPD coverFiling form
For-hire general freight, 10,001 lbs or more$750,000BMC-91, BMC-91X or BMC-82
For-hire, certain hazardous materials$1,000,000BMC-91, BMC-91X or BMC-82
Passengers, 15 or fewer$1,500,000BMC-91, BMC-91X or BMC-82
Passengers, 16 or more$5,000,000BMC-91, BMC-91X or BMC-82
Household goods movers, 10,001 lbs or more$750,000 plus $5,000 cargoPlus BMC-34 or BMC-83 for cargo

These are floors, not quotes. FMCSA does not publish premiums, and we have not found an official source for typical prices. What you pay depends on driver records, years in business, vehicle type, routes and cargo. Many shippers and brokers ask for more than the federal minimum, including cargo cover even where FMCSA does not require it, so ask your target customers what they expect before you buy. Get quotes from several licensed agents, as the SBA suggests for any business insurance.

Costs to plan for (illustrative budget)

Example only, for one owner-operator with one tractor-trailer. Only the authority fee is an official figure; the rest are placeholders to replace with your own quotes.

ItemExample amount
FMCSA permanent authority fee (official)$300
LLC formation and registered agent (state fees vary)$500
Insurance down payment (your quote)$6,000
Truck down payment or lease deposit$15,000
Working capital for fuel, tolls and maintenance for 60 days$12,000
Total example$33,800

Check the arithmetic on your own figures: $300 + $500 + $6,000 + $15,000 + $12,000 = $33,800. Brokers and shippers often pay 30 days or more after delivery, which is why the working capital line matters.

After authority is active

  • Keep your insurance continuous; a lapse can lead to your authority being revoked.
  • Keep driver qualification, hours-of-service and maintenance records; FMCSA's safety rules apply from the first load.
  • Check state registrations for your home state and the states you drive through.
  • Keep separate books for each truck so you know which loads make money.
  • For an SBA-backed loan to buy equipment, see our SBA loan guide.

Finding your first loads

New carriers usually find work through freight brokers and load boards, or by contracting directly with a shipper. Many brokers will not use a carrier until its authority has been active for some time and its insurance is on file, so line up your first customers while you wait. Read every broker-carrier agreement for payment terms, fuel surcharges and who pays detention.

Where Pryme fits

A trucking company is paid in US dollars and spends in US dollars, so Pryme matters mainly if you also support family or a business in Nigeria. A Pryme Business Account holds USD and NGN with local account details, and you can send to Nigeria with the rate and fee shown before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

How much does an MC number cost?

FMCSA charges $300 for permanent operating authority, and does not refund application fees. Insurance and other set-up costs come on top.

How long does it take to get operating authority?

FMCSA says new applications through the Unified Registration System may take 20 to 25 business days.

What is the minimum insurance for a trucking company?

For for-hire general freight in vehicles of 10,001 lbs or more, FMCSA requires at least $750,000 of bodily injury and property damage cover. Hazardous materials and passengers require more.

Can a green card holder or visa holder own a trucking company?

Ownership is not limited to citizens, but whether you can work in the business depends on your immigration status. That is information, not advice; check with an immigration lawyer.
