Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to start a spa in Nigeria: setup, staff and pricing

Choosing services, registering, fitting out treatment rooms, hiring therapists, hygiene and pricing for a new spa or wellness studio in Nigeria.

The short answer

To start a spa in Nigeria, choose a short list of services you can deliver well, register the business with the CAC and get a tax ID, then fit out private, clean treatment rooms with reliable power and water. Hire trained therapists, write hygiene and client-consultation routines, and price each treatment from its time, products and share of rent.

Decide what your spa offers

A spa can mean a massage studio, a beauty spa offering facials and nails, a day spa with steam and sauna, or a mobile service that visits clients at home or in hotels. Each needs different space and staff. Most new spas do better with a focused menu of six to ten services than with a long list they cannot staff.

ModelSpace neededTypical servicesWatch out for
Massage studioTwo to four private roomsSwedish, deep tissue, couplesTherapist training and client privacy
Beauty spaTreatment rooms plus nail stationsFacials, waxing, manicure, pedicureProduct stock and hygiene of tools
Day spaLarger space with steam or saunaPackages and day passesWater, power and maintenance costs
Mobile spaStorage and transportHome and hotel visitsSafety of staff and reliable transport

Register the business

  • CAC: register a business name or a private company. CAC charges ₦10,000 for a company with ₦1 million issued share capital, plus stamp duty at 0.75% of issued share capital.
  • Tax: get a tax ID. Since 1 January 2026, a CAC-registered small company with turnover below ₦100 million and assets below ₦250 million is exempt from companies income tax, capital gains tax and the development levy. Keep records to show you qualify.
  • Local permits: ask your local government which trading permit and signage charges apply to your premises.
  • Products: buy creams, oils and cosmetics that carry NAFDAC registration numbers. If you plan to make and sell your own branded products, those need NAFDAC registration.

Fitting out treatment rooms

Clients pay for calm, clean and private. Spend on what they will feel: comfortable treatment beds, good ventilation, soft lighting, steady air conditioning and hot water. Cut corners on décor before you cut corners on these.

  1. Treatment rooms that lock or close fully, with space to move around the bed.
  2. A reception and relaxation area away from the rooms so noise does not carry.
  3. Changing space and lockers, or at least a secure place for clients' belongings.
  4. Laundry: enough towels and sheets for a full day, with a washing and drying plan.
  5. Power backup sized for air conditioning, hot water and steamers.
  6. Clean toilets and showers if you offer body treatments.

Therapists, consultation and hygiene

A spa is only as good as its therapists. Hire people who can show training and test them with a treatment before you offer a job. Set a clear code of conduct, especially for massage: client consent, draping, who can be present and how complaints are handled. Write it down and make sure every therapist signs it.

Client consultation

Before a first treatment, ask clients about allergies, pregnancy, skin conditions, recent surgery and medication, and record the answers. Some treatments are not suitable for some clients, and a short form protects both the client and your staff.

Hygiene routine

  • Fresh linen and towels for every client.
  • Disinfect beds, tools and surfaces between clients.
  • Single-use items, such as nail files and wax spatulas, used once and thrown away.
  • Hands washed before and after every treatment.
  • Products stored closed, dated when opened and discarded when past their use-by date.

Pricing treatments and packages

Price each treatment from three numbers: the therapist's time, the products used, and the cost of the room for that time. Then decide what margin you need.

Worked example (illustrative): a spa's rent, power, laundry and reception cost ₦600,000 a month. With three rooms open 10 hours a day for 26 days, that is 780 room-hours, about ₦770 a room-hour. A 60-minute massage uses ₦1,500 of oils and towels, and the therapist earns ₦4,000 per session. The cost is about ₦6,270, so a price of ₦15,000 leaves around ₦8,700. If rooms are only half full, the room cost per treatment doubles to about ₦1,540, which is why filling weekday slots matters as much as the headline price.

Packages, gift vouchers and memberships bring cash in ahead of time and fill quiet days. Set expiry dates on vouchers and record them carefully, because each sold voucher is a treatment you still owe. Take a deposit for bookings of more than an hour and keep a list of regular clients to invite back when they are due. A short follow-up message after a first visit, asking how the client felt, often turns a one-off visit into a regular booking.

For taking deposits and payments, see how to get paid in Nigeria. If you also offer hair services, read how to start a salon or barbershop.

Where Pryme fits

Spas and salons are a supported Spaces sector. A spa that opens a Pryme Business Account can join Spaces and reach customers who hold Loans on Spaces, credit lent by Solid Allianze MFB that can only be spent with Spaces merchants, which suits packages and longer treatments. Our article on pay-later for salons, spas and gyms covers the merchant view. Bank-transfer checkout takes booking deposits. For merchant terms, contact Pryme.

Questions people ask

What do I need to open a spa in Nigeria?

CAC registration, a tax ID, any local government trading permit, private and clean treatment rooms with reliable power and water, trained therapists and products that carry NAFDAC numbers.

Do I need NAFDAC approval for spa products?

Products you buy should already carry NAFDAC registration numbers. If you make and sell your own branded creams or oils, they need their own NAFDAC registration.

How should I price spa treatments?

Add the therapist's pay, the products used and the room's cost per hour, then set a price that leaves your margin. Recheck it when rooms are not full.

Is a mobile spa business a good way to start?

It avoids rent and fit-out, but you need reliable transport, portable equipment and clear safety rules for staff visiting homes and hotels.
