Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to start a salon or barbershop in Nigeria

Registration, choosing a shop, equipment, chair rental versus salaried staff, hygiene and pricing for a new hair salon or barbershop in Nigeria.

The short answer

To start a salon or barbershop in Nigeria, register a business name or company with the CAC, check with your local government which trading permit and signage fees apply, and choose a shop with reliable power or budget for backup. Decide early whether stylists will be salaried or rent chairs, set hygiene routines for tools, and price each service from its real cost.

Choose the model

A barbershop, a ladies' hair salon and a unisex studio share many costs but differ in customers and spend. Barbing is quick and frequent. Braiding, weaving and treatments take hours and cost more per visit. Many owners start with one strength and add services once the chairs are busy.

ModelHow staff earnOwner's risk
Salaried staffMonthly pay, sometimes with commissionYou carry wages in slow weeks
Commission onlyA share of each serviceLower fixed cost, higher turnover of staff
Chair rentalStylist pays you a fixed rent and keeps their takingsSteady income, less control over service

Register and get permits

  • CAC: a business name is common for a single shop; a private company suits several branches. CAC charges ₦10,000 for a company with ₦1 million issued share capital, plus 0.75% stamp duty.
  • Tax: register for a tax ID. Under the laws in force since 1 January 2026, a CAC-registered small company with turnover below ₦100 million and assets below ₦250 million is exempt from companies income tax.
  • Local government: ask your local government secretariat which trading permit and signage charges apply before you put up a sign, so you are not caught by surprise later.

Set up the shop

Location matters more than size. A small shop on a busy street or inside an estate with no nearby competition will outperform a large one hidden away. Before signing, check water supply, power and drainage; salons use more water than most shops.

Starter equipment list

  1. Chairs and mirrors for each station.
  2. Clippers, trimmers, blades and a steriliser for barbing.
  3. Dryers, washing basins and steamers for a hair salon.
  4. Storage for products, towels and capes.
  5. Inverter, solar or generator backup so clippers and dryers keep running.
  6. A reception area with seating and a way to take bookings.

Hygiene and customer trust

Customers notice clean tools. Clean and disinfect clippers and combs between clients, change blades as recommended by the manufacturer, use fresh towels and capes, and keep the floor swept between cuts. Display your hygiene routine. It reassures new customers and becomes a habit for staff.

  • Disinfect tools between every client.
  • Use a clean neck strip or towel for each customer.
  • Store clean and used towels separately.
  • Patch-test chemical treatments such as relaxers and dyes, and record any reactions.

Pricing services

Price each service from the time it takes and the products it uses, not from what the shop across the road charges. A braiding job that takes five hours ties up a stylist and a chair for most of the day.

Worked example (illustrative): a shop's rent, power and other fixed costs are ₦450,000 a month and it opens 26 days, so each day costs ₦17,300 before any service. With three chairs open nine hours, that is about ₦640 per chair-hour. A one-hour treatment using ₦3,000 of products and a stylist's commission of ₦2,000 costs ₦5,640, so a price of ₦9,000 leaves about ₦3,360. A five-hour braiding job carrying ₦3,200 of fixed cost needs a much higher price to earn the same margin per hour.

Building a regular client base

Salons and barbershops live on repeat visits. A customer who has their hair cut every two weeks is worth far more over a year than one who comes for a single big occasion. Some habits that keep chairs full:

  • Record each client's name, phone number, service and stylist, and note when they are likely to be due again.
  • Send a polite reminder when a regular is due, and offer a weekday slot if Saturdays are full.
  • Keep a waiting area that is comfortable and clean, with a clear queue or booking order so walk-ins know how long they will wait.
  • Offer packages for weddings and events, booked and paid in advance.
  • Sell the products you use, at a fair mark-up, so clients can maintain their style at home.

Watch staff turnover. When a popular stylist leaves, their clients often follow them. Fair pay, clear commission rules and a good working environment are the best protection. Review every month which services, stylists and days bring in the most, and set rotas around that.

Take bookings for long services with a deposit, and keep a list of regular clients to remind them when they are due. For payment collection, see POS vs bank transfer.

Where Pryme fits

Spas and salons are a supported Spaces sector. A salon or barbershop that opens a Pryme Business Account can join Spaces and reach customers who hold Loans on Spaces, credit lent by Solid Allianze MFB that can only be spent with Spaces merchants, which suits higher-value services such as braids and treatments. See pay-later for salons, spas and gyms for the merchant side. Bank-transfer checkout handles deposits for bookings. For merchant terms, contact Pryme, and if you plan to add treatments, read how to start a spa.

Questions people ask

Do I need to register my barbershop with CAC?

Registration with the CAC as a business name or company lets you open a business account, sign leases in the business's name and qualify for small company tax rules.

Is chair rental better than paying stylists a salary?

Chair rental gives you steady income with lower wage risk, while salaried or commission staff give you more control over service quality. Many shops mix the two.

How do I price braiding in my salon?

Count the hours a chair and stylist are tied up, add product costs and a share of rent and power, then set a price that leaves a margin per hour similar to quicker services.

What equipment do I need to start a barbershop?

Chairs, mirrors, clippers, trimmers, blades, a steriliser, storage and power backup, plus a way to take bookings.
