Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Port Harcourt

Starting a cinema or screening venue in Port Harcourt

Power, late-night transport, outdoor promotion rules and NFVCB licensing: what to plan before opening a cinema or film venue in Port Harcourt.

The short answer

A cinema in Port Harcourt needs NFVCB licensing like any Nigerian exhibitor, plus RIRS registration, council approval and RISAA permits for signs and promotions. The local planning questions are power for projection and cooling, and how audiences get home after evening shows given the 10pm tricycle restriction.

The shape of the opportunity

Cinemas and screening venues in Port Harcourt range from multiplex screens in shopping centres to small halls showing Nollywood releases, football and community screenings. A smaller operator can compete on location, price and programming that larger chains overlook, but the cost base is heavy: projection, sound, seating and cooling all need steady power.

Licensing for film exhibition is national. Our guide to starting a cinema and NFVCB licences explains the federal side. This article is about running the numbers and the logistics in Port Harcourt.

Evening transport is a business issue

Rivers State Police confirmed in May 2026 that the statewide restriction on tricycle movement from 10pm remains in force, alongside restrictions on keke and motorcycle operation, and banned tinted commercial buses and tricycles with coverings that hide passengers. For a cinema, this matters directly. Many viewers rely on keke or buses, and a 9pm show that ends at 11pm leaves some of them stranded.

  • Schedule the last regular show to finish before the late restriction affects your audience, and keep later slots for premieres or events where people arrive by car.
  • If you are on a main road, check which bus and taxi routes still run late nearby.
  • Consider a matinée price for weekday afternoons, when students and shift workers are free and transport is easy.

Power, cooling and the building

PHED supplies Port Harcourt, and a screening room cannot stop mid-film when supply drops. Most operators run a generator or a hybrid solar and battery system as the main source, with grid supply as a saving when available. Air conditioning is usually the biggest load. Ask a qualified engineer to size the system for a full room on a hot afternoon, not an empty one.

If you are converting a warehouse or hall, check the building's approval status. A Rivers State town planners' leader warned in 2023 that local government documents alone are a recommendation, not building approval, which comes through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development or the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority.

Promoting shows: RISAA rules

Outdoor promotion in Rivers State runs through the Rivers State Signage and Advertisement Agency. Its published process covers:

Promotion typeWhat RISAA asks for
Building and free-standing signsAnnual first-party permit; sign sizes; photo montage if not yet installed
Branded vehiclesAdvert fee, form, vehicle photos showing half, full or door-side branding
Road showsA letter with event duration, route map, static or mobile activity, number of branded vehicles, shirts and canvassers
Posters, flyers, banners, inflatablesApproval and fees under mobile advertisement

A premiere road show through Rumuola, GRA and Trans-Amadi without a RISAA approval risks a fine and seized materials. Build the permit lead time into your marketing plan.

A worked example: weekday versus weekend

Example figures, not market prices. A 120-seat screen runs four shows a day. At weekends it averages 70% full at ₦4,000 a ticket: 336 tickets, ₦1,344,000 a day. On weekdays it averages 20% full: 96 tickets, ₦384,000 a day. Over a week that is ₦2,688,000 from weekends and ₦1,920,000 from weekdays. Raising weekday occupancy to 30% with a matinée offer adds ₦960,000 a week, even at a lower ticket price, which often matters more than another weekend show. See our guide to filling weekday seats for tactics.

State, council and tax

  1. Register with RIRS and get a Rivers State TIN for state tax and staff PAYE.
  2. Ask your council which entertainment, premises and other charges apply, and get written bills.
  3. Keep every receipt. A venue with queues and cash is a frequent target for unofficial collectors, according to research on Rivers businesses.

Programming for a Port Harcourt audience

Film supply is only part of the job. Smaller venues often fill gaps that multiplexes leave, and the calendar helps you plan:

  • Nollywood releases and local-language titles, which may draw families who rarely visit malls.
  • Live football on big match nights, subject to the broadcast rights and licences that apply to public screenings.
  • School and church group bookings on weekday mornings during term.
  • Private hire for birthdays, product launches and company events in the evenings, when guests usually come by car.
  • December and Easter holidays, when children are home and family outings rise.

Track attendance by show time and by title for the first three months. Patterns in Port Harcourt can differ by area: a venue near Rumuokoro may see a different crowd from one in GRA, and only your own numbers will tell you which slots deserve the best films. Snacks and drinks usually carry a higher margin than tickets, so plan the concession counter as carefully as the screen.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme's Business Account handles ticket income by transfer and checkout (0.5%, capped at ₦2,000), with agents preparing payouts to distributors and staff for your approval. Movies and cinema is a Spaces sector and Spaces is available in Port Harcourt: a venue that joins can welcome customers holding Loans on Spaces, credit that can only be spent with Spaces merchants. Ask Pryme about terms through contact.

Questions people ask

Do I need a licence to show films in Port Harcourt?

Yes. Film exhibition is licensed nationally by the NFVCB. You also need state tax registration, council clearance and RISAA permits for signs and promotions.

Can I do a road show to promote a movie in Port Harcourt?

Yes, with RISAA approval. Write to the agency with the event duration, route, whether it is static or mobile, and the number of vehicles, shirts and canvassers.

Is there a keke curfew in Port Harcourt?

Rivers State Police have kept a statewide restriction on tricycle movement from 10pm. Plan late show times with that in mind.

What power setup does a small cinema need?

Usually a generator or solar and battery system as the main supply, sized by an engineer for full-room cooling, with PHED grid supply as a cost saver.
