Ten years, one trunk

2018OjirehPrime Card

2023Multicurrency

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Spain

My Spanish bank blocked a payment to a transfer app

Why Spanish banks stop card or bank payments to money transfer apps, how to get the payment released, and what to check before trying again.

The short answer

Spanish banks run fraud checks on card and bank payments, and payments to money transfer apps, especially first ones, large ones or ones to Nigeria, are more likely to be stopped for confirmation. Usually you unblock it by confirming the payment in your banking app or calling the bank's fraud line, then retrying. If the transfer app rejected it instead, its own help pages say why: Ria lists card billing address mismatches among its reasons.

You press "send" in a transfer app, and the payment fails, or your bank texts you to call. It is frustrating, but a blocked payment usually means a check is working, not that you have done something wrong. The first job is to find out who stopped it: your bank, your card scheme, or the transfer app.

Who stopped the payment?

Western Union shows On hold, "Your bank is reviewing your transfer"Your bank, seen through the providerContact your bank, then the provider

Western Union's UK track FAQ lists "Your bank is reviewing your transfer" as one reason a transfer is on hold, which shows how often the delay sits with the sender's bank rather than the provider.

Why banks flag these payments

  • New payee or merchant. A first payment to a transfer firm looks different from your usual card use.
  • Size. A large amount compared with your history.
  • Destination and scams. Payments that move money abroad quickly are what scammers ask victims to make, so banks look twice. Western Union's own questionnaire asks customers whether they have been a victim of fraud or a scam.
  • Card settings. Some cards have online or international payments switched off, or low daily limits.
  • Credit cards. Remitly notes that card issuers may treat money transfers as cash advances; some issuers restrict them.

Why the transfer app may reject it

Ria's help centre lists reasons it cancels or rejects transfers, including non-personal use, unknown recipients, fraud patterns, a card billing address that does not match, payment not received, and missing information. It says a rejected transfer means no payment is taken and "We won't charge you the fees", although a card hold may take a few business days to clear. Ria also offers an appeal route.

Steps to get it through

  1. Check your banking app for a pending confirmation or a message. Use only the bank's own app or the number on the back of your card; do not call numbers from unexpected texts.
  2. Confirm the payment was yours and ask the bank to allow payments to that provider if it can.
  3. Check that online and international card payments are switched on and the limit covers the amount.
  4. Make sure the billing address in the transfer app matches the address your bank holds.
  5. Retry once. If it fails again, try another payment method the provider accepts, such as a bank transfer instead of a card.
  6. Check the first attempt did not go through before sending again, to avoid paying twice.

Bank transfer instead of card

If card payments keep failing, a provider that accepts bank payments may work better. Remitly lists "Easy Bank Transfers" for senders in Spain and other EEA countries. A bank transfer can be slower, because the provider may wait for your money to arrive, but it avoids card authorisation checks and any cash-advance treatment by a credit card issuer. Your bank can still stop a bank transfer it considers unusual, so the same confirmation step may apply.

If it keeps happening

Ask your bank directly why payments to the provider are stopped and whether a note on your profile would help. Keep salary and transfers in one account so your pattern is consistent. If a bank closes or restricts your account after transfers to Nigeria, it should give you its reasons where it can; see accounts closed after transfers.

Where Pryme fits

Moving euros into an account you already hold, and paying Nigeria from there, can avoid repeated card checks. A Pryme account holds euros and naira; Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve, and security uses an authenticator app and a transaction PIN rather than SMS codes. See Send.

Questions people ask

Why did my bank block my Remitly payment?

Banks flag new, large or unusual payments, including first payments to transfer apps. Confirm it in your bank app and retry.

How do I unblock a card payment to Western Union?

Confirm the payment with your bank through its app or official number, check card limits and online payments, then retry.

Will I be charged if Ria rejects my transfer?

Ria says no payment is taken on a rejected transfer and it does not charge the fees, though a card hold can take a few business days to clear.

Is it safe to call the number in the SMS about my blocked payment?

Use only the number on your card or in your bank's app. Scammers send fake bank messages.
