Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Spain

When does a Nigerian become a tax resident in Spain?

More than 183 days in Spain in a calendar year, or your main economic interests here, makes you resident. What that means for income from Nigeria.

The short answer

You become Spanish tax resident for a calendar year if you spend more than 183 days in Spain that year, or if the main base of your economic interests is in Spain; you are also presumed resident if your spouse and dependent minor children live here. Residents pay Spanish IRPF on worldwide income, including Nigerian rent and interest, with treaty relief for Nigerian tax.

The two Spanish tests

Spain decides tax residence under Article 9 of the Ley del IRPF. You are resident for a calendar year if either test is met:

  1. Days. You stay in Spain for more than 183 days during the calendar year. Sporadic absences count as days in Spain unless you prove you are tax resident in another country.
  2. Economic interests. The main core or base of your activities or economic interests is in Spain, directly or indirectly.

There is also a presumption: if your spouse (not legally separated) and your dependent minor children live in Spain, you are presumed resident unless you prove otherwise. Nationality and immigration status do not decide it. A Nigerian on a student stay, a work permit, a TIE card or no permit at all is tested the same way.

Counting the days

The count runs from 1 January to 31 December, because the tax period is the calendar year (Article 12). The line is more than 183 days, so 183 days is not enough on that test alone; 184 is.

Arrival (example, non-leap year)Days in Spain to 31 DecResident on the days test?
1 May245Yes
1 July184Yes, just
2 July183No (but check the economic test)
15 August139No (but check the economic test)

Someone who arrives in August with a Spanish job contract, a rented flat and family following can still be resident for that year if the centre of their economic interests is Spain. The days test is the clearest, not the only, route.

What being resident means for your Nigerian income

A Spanish resident pays IRPF on all their income wherever it arises (Article 2). For the year you are resident, that covers your Spanish salary and also Nigerian rent, interest, dividends, freelance fees and gains on selling Nigerian property or shares. Spain's tax period is the whole calendar year, so residence is decided for the year rather than from the day you land. Our guides on declaring Nigerian rent and filing the Renta with Nigerian income cover how it goes on the return.

When Nigeria still counts you as resident

Nigeria applies its own tests under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. PwC's summary (reviewed May 2026) says an individual is resident in Nigeria if any one applies: domiciled in Nigeria; a permanent home available for domestic use in Nigeria; a habitual abode in Nigeria; at least 183 days in Nigeria in any 12-month period; substantial economic or immediate family ties in Nigeria; or serving abroad as a Nigerian diplomat. A Nigerian who moves to Madrid but keeps a furnished family house in Enugu could meet more than one of those.

If both countries treat you as resident, Article 4 of the Spain–Nigeria treaty breaks the tie, in this order:

  1. Where you have a permanent home available. If in both, where your personal and economic relations are closer (centre of vital interests).
  2. If that cannot be decided, where you have a habitual abode.
  3. If both or neither, your nationality.
  4. If still unresolved, the two tax authorities agree it between them.

The tie-breaker decides which country is treated as your residence for the treaty, and so which one gives credit for the other's tax. It does not delete your domestic filing duties; see whether Nigeria taxes your Spanish salary.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a permit decides residence. Tax residence follows the Article 9 tests, not the type of card in your wallet.
  • Counting from your arrival date only. Days are counted for the calendar year, so a December arrival rarely meets the days test for that year but will usually meet it for the next.
  • Ignoring the family presumption. If your spouse and minor children are settled in Spain while you work rotations abroad, Spain presumes you resident unless you prove otherwise.
  • Forgetting Nigeria's side. Leaving Nigeria does not end Nigerian residence if a permanent home or close family ties remain there.

What to check first

  • Keep a day count for the year: flight confirmations, passport stamps, rental contract dates.
  • Note where your family lives and where your main income and assets are.
  • If you keep a home in Nigeria, decide whether it is available for your use; that matters to both countries' tests.
  • Register for a Spanish tax ID (NIE/NIF) if you have not, and check whether you need to file the Renta for your first year.

Where Pryme fits

Residence changes how your money is taxed, not where you may hold it. A Pryme account holds naira and euros side by side, with Swap showing the rate and the fee before you approve a conversion, and verifiable statements to show either tax authority what came in and when. See multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Is it 183 days or 184 days for Spanish tax residence?

The law says more than 183 days in the calendar year, so 184 days or more meets the days test.

I arrived in Spain in September. Am I resident this year?

Not on the days test, but you can still be resident if your main economic interests are in Spain, for example a Spanish job and your assets moved here.

Do trips back to Nigeria break my 183 days?

Short, sporadic absences still count as days in Spain unless you prove you are tax resident in another country.

Can I be tax resident in both Spain and Nigeria?

Under each country's own law, yes. The Spain–Nigeria treaty's Article 4 tie-breaker then decides which one counts as your residence for the treaty.
