Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

Does Ghana tax my Nigerian dividends if I live in Accra?

If you are resident in Ghana, Nigerian dividends are in scope there, with a credit for Nigeria's 10% withholding capped at your average Ghana rate.

The short answer

If you are tax resident in Ghana, your Nigerian dividends are foreign-sourced income, and Ghana taxes residents on worldwide income, so they are in scope. Nigeria first withholds 10% on dividends, and Ghana allows a resident a credit for that foreign tax, capped at the average rate of Ghanaian income tax. How the GRA rates foreign dividends, at graduated rates or otherwise, is not set out in the summaries we checked, so confirm with the GRA before filing.

Nigerians in Accra often keep shares on the Nigerian Exchange bought years ago, or hold dividend-paying stakes in family businesses back home. Dividends arrive in a Nigerian bank account with tax already taken off, and it is easy to assume that settles it. If you are resident in Ghana, it may not. This guide sets out what is clear, what is not, and how to keep the double tax to a minimum. It is information, not tax advice.

First: are you resident in Ghana?

For a Nigerian, Ghana residence usually turns on presence: 183 days or more in any 12-month period that starts or ends in the year, according to PwC's Ghana summary. If you are not resident, Ghana taxes only income derived in Ghana, and Nigerian dividends are outside its reach. Our guide to when a Nigerian becomes tax resident in Ghana explains the test.

The Nigerian side: 10% withheld

PwC's Nigeria withholding tax table lists dividends at 10% for residents and non-residents, companies and individuals. The paying company or registrar deducts it before the dividend reaches you. There is no Ghana-Nigeria treaty in force to reduce this rate; see the treaty status. Ask the registrar for a withholding tax receipt or credit note each time; you will need it to claim relief in Ghana.

The Ghana side: what is clear and what is not

PointWhat the sources say
ScopeResidents are taxed on worldwide income; foreign-sourced income is taxable (PwC Ghana)
Dividend tax in GhanaDividends are subject to a final withholding tax of 8% for residents and non-residents (PwC Ghana)
Foreign dividendsNot addressed separately in PwC's summary; no GRA guidance found
ReliefCredit for foreign tax, limited to the foreign income's share and to the average Ghanaian rate (PwC Ghana)

The 8% final withholding tax works where a Ghanaian company pays the dividend and deducts the tax. A Nigerian company does not deduct Ghanaian tax, so it is not clear from the summaries whether Ghana treats a foreign dividend as subject to the same 8% or adds it to your chargeable income at the graduated rates, which reach 35%. That difference matters, so ask the GRA in writing how it wants foreign dividends reported.

Leaving the money in Nigeria does not change it

PwC's Ghana summary describes residents as taxed on worldwide income and does not mention a remittance basis. So keeping the dividends in a Nigerian account, or reinvesting them on the NGX, does not on its own take them out of Ghana's reach. What counts is whether you were resident in the year you received them.

Dividends from a family company

If you own shares in a private Nigerian company run by relatives, the same rules apply: the company withholds 10% and should give you a receipt. Ask for board minutes or a dividend voucher showing the date and amount declared. Without those, proving the Nigerian tax for a Ghana credit is difficult, and a payment from the company without paperwork may be hard to explain to either tax authority.

Can Nigeria also treat you as resident?

If you keep a home available in Nigeria or have substantial economic or immediate family ties there, Nigeria may treat you as resident too, and then tax your worldwide income. The dividends are Nigerian-source either way. See whether Nigeria taxes a Ghana salary for the Nigerian tests.

Practical steps

  1. Settle your Ghana residence status for the year.
  2. Collect every dividend voucher and withholding tax receipt from the registrar.
  3. Record the cedi value of each dividend and the exchange rate and date you used.
  4. Ask the GRA how foreign dividends are taxed and reported, and keep its answer.
  5. Check that your registrar has your current bank details so dividends are not left unclaimed.

If you are still building your Nigerian portfolio from Ghana, read buying NGX shares from Ghana.

Where Pryme fits

Registrars pay dividends into Nigerian naira accounts. A Pryme account opened from Ghana has Nigerian naira account details, with naira deposits held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, and Swap converts to dollars when you choose; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. You can also generate verifiable statements for your records.

Questions people ask

Are Nigerian dividends taxed in Ghana?

If you are tax resident in Ghana, they are in scope because residents are taxed on worldwide income. Non-residents are taxed only on Ghana-derived income.

What is the withholding tax on Nigerian dividends?

PwC's Nigeria table lists 10% on dividends for residents and non-residents.

Can I claim the Nigerian 10% against Ghana tax?

Yes, as a Ghana resident, up to the average Ghanaian tax rate on that income.

Does Ghana's 8% dividend tax apply to Nigerian dividends?

PwC lists 8% as a final withholding tax on dividends, but does not say how foreign dividends are treated. Ask the GRA.
