Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

SIC codes for a UK company importing Nigerian goods

The Companies House SIC codes that fit importers of Nigerian food, drinks, fabrics and cosmetics, for wholesale, shops and online selling.

The short answer

A UK company importing Nigerian goods usually picks wholesale codes in the 46 group, such as 46380 (wholesale of other food, including fish), 46390 (non-specialised wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco), 46420 (clothing and footwear) or 46450 (perfume and cosmetics), and retail codes such as 47110, 47290 or 47910 if it also sells to the public. Companies House lets you choose up to four codes and change them on your confirmation statement.

When you register a UK company, Companies House asks for at least one Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code describing what the company does. For a business bringing in egusi, garri, palm oil, stockfish, ankara or shea butter, the right codes depend less on the product's origin than on how you sell it: to other businesses (wholesale), to the public from a shop or stall (retail), or online. This guide lists the codes that fit, taken from Companies House's condensed SIC list.

How SIC codes work at Companies House

  • GOV.UK says you choose a SIC code when you register the company, alongside the registered office.
  • A Companies House blog post says you can select up to four codes, and must give at least one.
  • You change them through your next confirmation statement, which you can file early if needed.
  • Dormant and non-trading companies still need a code (99999 Dormant Company, 74990 Non-trading company).

The code is a description, not a licence. Choosing 46380 does not register you as a food business; that is a separate step with your council (see registering a food business as an importer).

Wholesale codes: selling to shops and caterers

CodeDescription (Companies House)Fits
46310Wholesale of fruit and vegetablesYams, plantain, peppers, fresh produce
46330Wholesale of dairy products, eggs and edible oils and fatsPalm oil, groundnut oil
46341Wholesale of fruit and vegetable juices, mineral water and soft drinksMalt drinks, zobo, soft drinks
46342Wholesale of wine, beer, spirits and other alcoholic beveragesBeer, palm wine, spirits
46370Wholesale of coffee, tea, cocoa and spicesSpices, seasoning blends, cocoa
46380Wholesale of other food, including fish, crustaceans and molluscsStockfish, dried fish, crayfish, flours, egusi, beans
46390Non-specialised wholesale of food, beverages and tobaccoA mixed food range
46410Wholesale of textilesAnkara, aso-oke, lace by the yard
46420Wholesale of clothing and footwearReady-made clothing and shoes
46450Wholesale of perfume and cosmeticsShea butter, black soap, hair and skin products
46900Non-specialised wholesale tradeA mix of food and non-food goods

If you act as an agent rather than a buyer

If you find buyers for Nigerian exporters and earn commission without owning the goods, the agent codes fit better: 46170 (agents involved in the sale of food, beverages and tobacco), 46160 (textiles, clothing, fur, footwear and leather goods) or 46190 (a variety of goods).

Retail and online codes

CodeDescription (Companies House)Fits
47110Retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominatingAn African grocery shop
47290Other retail sale of food in specialised storesA specialist food shop
47230Retail sale of fish, crustaceans and molluscs in specialised storesA shop focused on fish and stockfish
47710Retail sale of clothing in specialised storesA fashion boutique
47750Retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised storesA beauty supply shop
47810Retail sale via stalls and markets of food, beverages and tobacco productsA market stall
47820Retail sale via stalls and markets of textiles, clothing and footwearA fabric stall
47910Retail sale via mail order houses or via InternetAn online shop or marketplace seller

Choosing your four

Pick the codes that describe where most of your revenue will come from, in that order. Some examples:

Food importer supplying shops
46380, 46390, and 46341 if you bring in drinks.
Importer with its own shop and website
46380, 47110, 47910.
Fabric and fashion importer
46410, 46420, 47910, 47710 if you open a boutique.
Cosmetics importer
46450, 47750, 47910.

Avoid choosing a code only because it looks impressive. Your SIC codes are public on the register, so banks, insurers and suppliers may look at them, and a mismatch with what you actually do can prompt questions. If you add food manufacturing, such as packing or blending spice mixes, 10890 (manufacture of other food products not elsewhere classified) may also apply.

After registration

  1. Register as a food business with your council if you handle food.
  2. Get an EORI number before your first import; see EORI numbers for importers.
  3. Check import rules for each product; importing Nigerian foodstuff covers the controls.
  4. Update your SIC codes on the confirmation statement as the business changes.

If you plan to supply other African grocers, wholesaling to African grocery shops covers that market.

Where Pryme fits

Importers often pay suppliers in Nigeria and get paid in pounds. A Pryme Business Account holds GBP and NGN together, and Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve a conversion. This page is general information.

Questions people ask

What SIC code should I use for importing African food?

Usually 46380 (wholesale of other food, including fish) or 46390 (non-specialised wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco) if you sell to businesses, plus 47110 or 47910 if you sell to the public.

How many SIC codes can a UK company have?

Up to four, according to Companies House, and you must give at least one.

Can I change my SIC code later?

Yes. Update it on your next confirmation statement, or file one early if you need the change sooner.

Does my SIC code register me as a food business?

No. Food business registration is a separate step with your local council.
