Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Should you invest in Nigeria or pay off US debt first?

Weighing a certain cost against an uncertain one: average US card rates of about 21% a year versus naira yields that depend on the exchange rate.

The short answer

If you carry a US credit card balance, paying it off is usually the stronger first move: the Federal Reserve's October 2026 release puts the average card rate at 21.19% for all accounts and 22.36% on accounts charged interest, a cost you pay for certain, while a naira yield of around 15% only reaches you in dollars if the naira holds. Low-rate debt such as a fixed mortgage is a closer call and depends on your goals in Nigeria.

Compare like with like

Paying off a debt is a return you know in advance: every dollar you repay stops charging the debt's rate. An investment in Nigeria is a return you hope for, in naira, which you then have to bring back to dollars. To compare them, put both in dollars and allow for risk.

US debt typeWhat it costsSource
Credit cards, all accounts21.19% APR (August 2026, preliminary)Federal Reserve G.19, 7 Oct 2026
Credit cards, accounts assessed interest22.36% APR (August 2026, preliminary)Federal Reserve G.19, 7 Oct 2026
Car loans, student loans, mortgagesYour own statement shows the rateYour lender

On the Nigerian side, the 364-day Treasury bill stopped at 15.85% on 7 October 2026 (Nairametrics), and a 10% withholding tax applies to interest on short-term securities including T-bills (Reuters via Bizcommunity, October 2025). That leaves a net naira return of about 14.3% on that example, before any currency move and before US tax on worldwide income.

Worked example: a card balance

Example only. Ifeanyi in Chicago has $5,000 on a card at 22% and $5,000 of savings he could send to a naira T-bill earning a net 13.5% after withholding tax.

ChoiceOne year laterCertain?
Pay off the cardSaves about $1,100 of interest ($5,000 × 22%)Yes, if he stops using the card
Invest in naira, naira unchangedGains about $675 ($5,000 × 13.5%), card still costs about $1,100No
Invest in naira, naira 10% weakerGains about $159, card still costs about $1,100No

Even with the naira unchanged, keeping the card balance costs him about $425 more than the investment earns. The naira return would have to beat 22% in dollar terms just to break even, and US tax on the Nigerian interest makes that harder. (Figures rounded; the 10% weaker case uses ₦16,457,500 per ₦14,500,000 invested, divided by a rate 10% weaker.)

When investing first can make sense

  • The debt is cheap and fixed. A mortgage or student loan at a low fixed rate is a different decision from a 22% card. Here a naira investment may be reasonable if you accept the currency risk.
  • You need naira anyway. If the money will be spent in Nigeria on a known date, for school fees or a building stage, currency risk matters less because you are not converting back.
  • Your employer matches retirement contributions. Many people put enough into a workplace plan to get the full match before anything else, because the match is an immediate return. Check your plan's terms.
  • You have no emergency cushion. Neither a T-bill in Lagos nor extra card payments help if your car breaks down next month. Cash you can reach in the US often comes first.

A sensible order to think it through

  1. List every debt with its rate and minimum payment.
  2. Keep a small US emergency fund in an account you can reach quickly.
  3. Clear high-rate debt, cards first, starting with the highest rate.
  4. Take any employer retirement match.
  5. Then decide how much to put into Nigeria, and in what: naira savings for naira goals, or investments you accept may lose dollar value.
  6. Write down why. A family request, a land offer or a scheme promising monthly returns should go through the same test.

Avalanche or snowball

Two common ways to clear several debts: the avalanche pays the highest rate first, which costs least in interest; the snowball clears the smallest balance first, which some people find easier to stick with. On numbers alone the avalanche wins. If a quick win keeps you going, the snowball can still beat a plan you abandon. Either way, keep paying at least the minimum on every account so no balance goes late.

While you are clearing debt, you can still keep a small naira plan running if you have a definite naira expense coming, such as a parent's rent or a sibling's school fees. Paying those on time is not investing; it is meeting a commitment.

Family pressure is real

Many diaspora Nigerians are asked to fund opportunities at home: land, a relative's business, a cooperative. Saying "I am clearing a debt first, then I will plan this properly" is a complete answer. Our guides on paying off Nigerian debts from the US and investing in a family business cover the other side.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not lend in the US. Once your debt is under control, a Pryme account lets you hold USD and NGN side by side and convert with Swap when you choose, with the rate and fee shown before you approve. Naira goals can sit in a Savings Box, Naira-only and held in Nigeria. Information only, not financial advice.

Questions people ask

Should I pay off my credit card before investing in Nigeria?

Usually yes. Average US card rates were about 21% to 22% in the Federal Reserve's October 2026 release, and that cost is certain, while naira returns depend on the exchange rate.

Can a Nigerian T-bill beat my credit card interest?

Rarely in dollar terms. A 15.85% bill is about 14.3% after 10% withholding tax, before any naira fall and US tax, which is below a 22% card rate.

What about a low-rate mortgage?

That is a closer decision. If the rate is low and fixed, some people invest instead of overpaying, accepting the currency risk.

Is it a good idea to borrow in the US to invest in Nigeria?

It doubles the risk: you pay the US interest for certain and carry the naira risk too. Most people avoid it.
