Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Shoe selling business: Aba-made vs imported, margins

Starting a shoe business in Nigeria: Aba-made versus imported stock, the footwear import rules, pricing tiers, and selling online or from a stall.

The short answer

A shoe selling business buys pairs from local makers, such as Aba's shoe clusters, or from wholesalers of imported stock, and resells at a markup by size and style. Aba-made shoes are usually cheaper to buy and easier to reorder, while imported shoes can sell at higher prices but carry legal risk: most footwear is on Nigeria's import prohibition list. In the labelled example below, 12 Aba-made pairs bought at ₦9,000 earn about ₦76,000 after transport.

Shoes are a steady retail line: everyone needs them, styles change each season, and buyers will pay more for a good fit and finish. The business can be a market stall, a small shop or an online page with deliveries. Before you choose stock, it helps to understand where shoes in Nigerian markets come from and what the rules say.

Aba-made shoes

Aba in Abia State is commonly reported as a major centre of leather and shoe-making clusters, where makers are said to produce men's and women's shoes, sandals and slippers in volume. Buying there, or from wholesalers who stock Aba-made pairs, has clear advantages for a reseller:

  • Lower unit cost and the chance to order your own designs or colours in small runs.
  • Faster reordering: you can restock popular sizes in days rather than weeks.
  • No customs exposure, since the goods are made in Nigeria.
  • Room to build a brand, with your own label on the insole if the maker agrees. If you do, register the name: the Corporate Affairs Commission's fee schedule gazetted on 29 May 2025 lists business name registration with certified copies at ₦20,000.

The trade-offs are uneven finishing between makers and buyers who assume local means low quality. Inspect stitching, glue lines and soles on every pair, and work with makers whose sample matches what they deliver. For buying trips and wholesale tips, see buying Aba-made goods wholesale.

Imported shoes and the law

Imported shoes, new and used, are common in Nigerian markets. Resellers should know that, according to the US International Trade Administration's summary of Nigeria's rules (updated April 2025), most footwear and bags are on the import prohibition list, and counterfeit goods and second-hand clothing are on the absolute prohibition list. Goods brought in against those lists can be seized, including from warehouses and shops. If you buy imported stock from a wholesaler, ask how it entered the country and keep invoices; this is information, not legal advice. Check the current lists before buying any imported line.

Pricing tiers

TierTypical stockHow it sells
EntrySlippers, sandals, simple canvasHigh volume, small margin per pair, price-led buyers
MiddleAba-made leather shoes, office and casual stylesSteady repeat buyers, margin from fit and finish
UpperBranded or premium imported pairsFewer sales, higher margin per pair, authenticity questions

Worked example

  • 12 pairs of men's leather shoes at ₦9,000 each: ₦108,000.
  • Transport from Aba and packaging: ₦8,000.
  • Total cost: ₦116,000, or about ₦9,667 per pair.
  • Sell all 12 at ₦16,000: ₦192,000.
  • Gross profit: ₦192,000 − ₦116,000 = ₦76,000, before rent, adverts and delivery you absorb.

Shoes have a sizing problem that clothes do not: you need several sizes of every style. A common approach is to buy a size run weighted to the middle sizes (for example 41 to 44 for men) and only one pair each at the ends. Unsold extreme sizes are where shoe margins disappear.

Storage, care and dead stock

Shoes lose value on the shelf faster than many traders expect. Leather dries and cracks in heat, glue softens, white soles yellow and boxes get crushed. A few habits protect your margin:

  • Store pairs in their boxes, off the floor, out of direct sun and away from damp walls.
  • Stuff toes with paper so shapes hold, and wipe leather with a little polish every few weeks.
  • Rotate older stock to the front and sell it first.
  • Track how long each style has been in stock. Anything unsold after about three months is a candidate for a clearance price before it becomes unsellable.
  • Keep a notebook or spreadsheet of sizes sold per style, so your next order follows real demand rather than guesses.

Clearance is not failure. Selling a slow pair at cost frees money for a style that sells, which is better than holding it at full price for a year.

Online or stall

A stall or shop lets buyers try pairs on, which cuts returns. Online selling reaches more buyers but brings exchanges for size. If you sell online:

  • Give exact sizes in EU and UK numbers and the insole length in centimetres.
  • Photograph each pair from the side, sole and top in daylight.
  • State your exchange policy before payment: who pays delivery for a size swap, and in how many days.
  • Use a catalogue so buyers see what is in stock (see selling on WhatsApp Business and confirm every payment has landed before dispatch (see fake payment proof checklist).

What to check first

  1. Which tier your customers buy, by visiting nearby shops and pages.
  2. Two or three makers' or wholesalers' samples, worn for a week.
  3. How imported stock entered the country, if you buy any.
  4. Your size run and your exchange policy.
  5. Your monthly fixed costs and how many pairs cover them.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Business Accounts include bank-transfer checkout free of charge, and invoicing for wholesale buyers who order on credit terms. Shoe shops in the retail sector can apply to join Spaces in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

Questions people ask

Is it profitable to sell shoes in Nigeria?

It can be, if you price from your full cost and avoid dead sizes. In the labelled example, 12 Aba-made pairs bought at ₦9,000 and sold at ₦16,000 earn about ₦76,000 gross after transport.

Where can I buy shoes wholesale in Nigeria?

From makers and wholesalers in Aba's shoe clusters, and from wholesale markets in major cities. Buy samples first, inspect finishing, and confirm the maker can repeat the same quality.

Is importing shoes into Nigeria banned?

According to the US ITA summary updated April 2025, most footwear is on Nigeria's import prohibition list, and second-hand clothing and counterfeit goods are absolutely prohibited. Check the current list for your exact product.

How much capital do I need to start a shoe business?

Enough for a size run of a few styles plus display and rent. A first order of 12 pairs in the example cost ₦116,000 including transport; a small stall needs several styles.
