Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Sending money to a Nigerian account in a business name

Can Canadian remittance apps and banks pay into Nigerian corporate or business-name accounts, and what checks apply when the receiver is a business?

The short answer

Some Canadian remittance apps and all Canadian banks can pay into a Nigerian account held in a business name, but many personal remittance services are designed for transfers between people and may limit, query or cancel payments to businesses. Expect to be asked what the payment is for and how you are connected to the business. A bank wire with an invoice reference is usually the clearest route for paying a Nigerian supplier, builder or school.

Two kinds of business account in Nigeria

In Nigeria, a business can be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission as a business name (a sole trader or partnership trading under a name) or as a limited company. Banks open accounts in that registered name. Access Bank's corporate account page, for example, asks for the certificate of incorporation or business registration, the memorandum and articles, CAC forms, a board resolution, a TIN and the BVN of each signatory. So a business account in Nigeria is tied to CAC records and named people, which is what a Canadian provider is checking against.

For the difference between the two forms, see the Ledger's guide to business name or limited company.

Will a Canadian app pay into a business account?

It depends on the app, and the public pages are often silent. Remitly's Canada-to-Nigeria page, for instance, asks for the recipient's name, contact details and bank or pickup information and does not say whether the account may belong to a business; it points businesses to a separate Remitly Business product. Western Union's UK tracking FAQ lists "sent to a business account instead of a personal account" among the reasons a transfer can be cancelled. That is the UK page, but it shows how some consumer services treat business receivers. Check your own app's terms or ask support before sending.

  • Consumer remittance apps: built for family and personal support. Some allow business receivers, some do not.
  • Business versions of the same apps: designed for paying suppliers; may ask for invoices.
  • Canadian bank wires: will pay a business account if you give the correct name, account, bank and Swift code.

The checks applied to business receivers

Canadian providers follow FINTRAC rules on electronic funds transfers. FINTRAC's EFT guidance says that when a business owner requests a transfer, the business is the requester; when an employee requests it, the employee is the requester and the business is a third party. The same logic leads providers to ask who is really behind a payment.

FINTRAC's indicators for money services businesses include "wire transfers to or from unrelated parties" and a client who "appears to be or states they are acting on behalf of another party". A personal sender paying a company in Nigeria is not suspicious in itself, but it is outside the family pattern a remittance app expects, so it may trigger questions such as:

  1. What is the payment for? (goods, building work, school fees, rent)
  2. What is your relationship to the business? (customer, owner, family member's business)
  3. Can you provide an invoice, contract or quotation?
  4. Is the money yours, and where did it come from?

Get the account name exactly right

A business account's name is often long: "Okoro & Sons Building Services Ltd" rather than "Okoro Building". Enter it as the bank holds it. A name that does not match is one of the commonest reasons an app rejects or holds a transfer; see why an app rejects a receiver's name.

Example

Example: you are paying a builder in Enugu ₦3,200,000 for roofing. The builder gives a personal account. You ask for the business account instead, get an invoice on the business letterhead with the CAC registration number, and send by bank wire with the invoice number in the payment details. If the work goes wrong, you can show who you paid, for what and when.

If the receiver is a family member's business

If you are sending family support to a sibling who happens to bank through their shop's business account, say so when asked. The honest description, "support for my sister, paid into her shop account", is better than labelling it a business payment. If you can, ask them for a personal account instead.

What to check first

  1. Does your app allow business receivers? Check its terms or ask support.
  2. Do you have the exact registered account name and the CAC number?
  3. Do you have an invoice or agreement you can upload if asked?
  4. Would a bank wire be clearer for a large supplier payment? See Canadian bank wire steps.

Paying small traders who only have personal accounts

Many small businesses in Nigeria, from tailors to mechanics, trade through the owner's personal account. Paying them that way is common and not wrong, but your record then shows a payment to a person, not a business. If you need to show what the money was for, ask for a simple invoice or a WhatsApp message stating the job and the price, and keep it with your receipt. For larger jobs, it is reasonable to ask whether the trader has a registered business name and an account in that name; registration with the CAC is the step that gives a business its own banking identity.

Where Pryme fits

If the business in Nigeria uses a Pryme Business account, it holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details and can send invoices you pay against. From a personal Pryme account you can send to it and see the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

Can I use Remitly to pay a Nigerian company?

Remitly's Canada-to-Nigeria page does not say whether business accounts are accepted and points businesses to a separate product. Check the app's terms or ask support before sending.

Why did my app cancel a transfer to a business account?

Some consumer services only allow person-to-person transfers. Western Union's UK FAQ, for example, lists sending to a business account instead of a personal one as a cancellation reason.

Is it safer to pay a Nigerian supplier's business account?

It gives you a clearer record that the business, not a person, received the money. Ask for an invoice in the business's registered name.

What will my bank ask before wiring to a Nigerian company?

Usually the purpose, the exact account name, the bank's Swift code, and sometimes an invoice. Large transfers may also bring a source-of-funds question.
