Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Sending money to Nigeria for a relative's flight booking

Paying the airline directly from the US or sending money for a relative to book: the costs, the risks and the proof each route leaves.

The short answer

You have two broad choices: book and pay for the ticket yourself from the US, in the relative's name, or send money so they or an agent can book in Nigeria. Paying the airline directly leaves the cleanest proof, an e-ticket and a card charge from the airline, and keeps refund rights with you; sending money is simpler for the family but leaves only a transfer receipt.

Option 1: you book and pay from the US

Most airlines let you buy a ticket for someone else. You enter the passenger's details and pay with your own card. The US Department of Transportation's Fly-Rights guide, an archived page last updated in September 2025, reminds travellers that the name on the ticket should match the ID used to travel, so copy the name exactly from the relative's passport.

  • Ask the relative for a photo of the passport data page, not just their name as written in WhatsApp.
  • Check spelling, order of names and any middle names. A mismatch at the airport is a problem you cannot fix from America.
  • Add their phone number and email so they receive schedule changes directly.
  • Note the booking reference and check it on the airline's own "manage booking" page.

If you pay by card in US dollars, the airline is the merchant, so card protections and the airline's own refund rules apply to you as the buyer. The same archived DOT page says credit card refunds are generally forwarded within seven business days and that many airlines hold a booking for 24 hours or refund it if cancelled within a day. Treat that as a pointer and read the fare rules for your ticket, because the page itself says continued reliance is not advised.

Points to check before you pay

  • Whether the airline asks to see the card used at check-in. Ask the airline, or read its payment policy, before you book.
  • Whether your card charges a foreign transaction fee if the booking is processed outside the US.
  • Whether you are buying a refundable or non-refundable fare, and what a change costs.

Option 2: you send money and they book

Sometimes the relative prefers to book in naira through a local travel agent, or wants to choose dates themselves. Then you send money to their Nigerian account and they pay.

  • Your proof is the remittance receipt, which under 12 CFR 1005.31 shows the amount sent, the fee, the exchange rate and the amount received.
  • You have no direct relationship with the airline, so refunds go back to whoever paid, usually the relative or the agent.
  • A naira price quoted today may change by the time the money arrives; agree whether you are sending a fixed naira amount or a fixed dollar amount.
  • Ask for the e-ticket and the agent's receipt once booked, and check the booking on the airline's site.

Which proof each route leaves

ProofYou pay airlineYou send money
E-ticket in passenger's nameYes, emailed to youOnly if the relative or agent forwards it
Charge from airline on your statementYesNo
Remittance receiptNoYes
Who holds refund rightsYou, as buyerWhoever paid the airline
Evidence for a visa sponsor letterBooking in your name as payerTransfer receipt plus forwarded ticket

If the trip is for a visa interview or the relative is visiting you, the paper trail can matter later. Our guide to paying for parents' flights from Lagos covers that case.

Scams around flight money

Requests for "ticket money" are a common opening in family emergency and romance scams. Before you pay anyone:

  1. Call the relative on a number you already know, not one given in the message.
  2. Book directly with the airline yourself if you can. A real relative will accept a ticket in place of cash.
  3. Never pay a "travel agent" you have not dealt with through a gift card or crypto.
  4. Check any booking reference on the airline's own site before you send more money.

A middle route is to pay a known travel agent in Nigeria directly from the US, by transfer to the agency's business account. That keeps the money away from personal accounts, but you still rely on the agent to issue the ticket and pass on any refund, so ask for the e-ticket number before the full balance is paid.

Gift tax and timing

Paying for a relative's flight is a gift. The IRS gift tax FAQ (reviewed July 2026) puts the annual exclusion at $19,000 per recipient for 2026; gifts within that amount are not taxable gifts. Above it, the same FAQ explains when a return is needed; the donor, not the relative, is generally the one responsible, and the 2026 basic exclusion it gives is $15,000,000. If you are booking for a busy period, see when to book December flights to Lagos.

Where Pryme fits

If the family would rather book locally, you can send from your dollar balance with the rate and fee shown before you approve, and download a receipt for your records. A relative with a Pryme account in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt can also pay for local transport to the airport through merchants in Spaces, which covers the transport sector.

Questions people ask

Can I buy a plane ticket for someone in Nigeria from the US?

Yes. Most airlines let you book in the passenger's name and pay with your own card. Copy the name exactly from their passport and check the airline's policy on third-party card payments.

Is it better to send money or pay the airline directly?

Paying the airline leaves an e-ticket and an airline charge on your statement, and the refund comes to you. Sending money is simpler for the family but your only proof is the transfer receipt.

Do I have to report paying a relative's flight to the IRS?

Only if your total gifts to that person pass the annual exclusion, $19,000 for 2026 according to the IRS. Above that, read the IRS gift tax FAQ on when a return is needed; the donor is generally responsible.

How do I know a flight booking is real?

Enter the booking reference and surname on the airline's own manage-booking page. If it does not appear there, do not send more money.
