Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Sending money to Nigeria from Chicago: in-person options

Agent counters or a bank branch wire: in-person ways to send money to Nigeria from Chicago, what each costs and how to check an Illinois licence.

The short answer

In Chicago you can send money to Nigeria in person by paying cash at a Western Union or MoneyGram agent, or by sending an international wire from your bank branch. Compare the naira that will arrive, not just the fee. To check a licence, search the company's NMLS number on NMLS Consumer Access for Illinois; your receipt must also name its state regulator.

Chicago gives you two kinds of in-person option for sending money to Nigeria: a transfer company's agent counter, often inside a shop, and your own bank's branch, where you can send an international wire. They work differently, cost differently and suit different amounts. Here is how to choose, how to prepare, and how to confirm the company is licensed in Illinois.

Option one: a transfer company's agent

Western Union and MoneyGram both say on their US pages for Nigeria that you can pay cash at an agent. The agent takes your money and details, and the company delivers to a Nigerian bank account or, with some services, for cash pickup. MoneyGram lists Nigerian banks it pays into, among them UBA, Union Bank, Sterling and FCMB.

  • Good for: cash, smaller amounts, people without a US bank card.
  • Bring: photo ID, and the recipient's exact name, bank and 10-digit account number.
  • Ask for: the printed disclosure before paying, showing fee, rate and naira to be delivered.

Option two: a wire from your bank branch

A bank wire goes from your US bank through the SWIFT network to the Nigerian bank. Bank of America's wire page, as one example, lists an outgoing international wire in USD at $45, says international wires typically arrive in one to five business days, gives a 5 p.m. ET cut-off, and notes that consumer international remittances can be cancelled within 30 minutes. It also says wires sent in a foreign currency carry no wire fee but include an exchange rate markup. Other banks set their own terms. A wire suits larger amounts paid into an account, and it needs the Nigerian bank's SWIFT code as well as the account details.

SpeedShown on the disclosureBank of America cites 1 to 5 business days
Cost to compareFee plus exchange marginWire fee, exchange markup if converted, intermediary deductions

Our guide to exchange rate margins shows how to compare the two on equal terms.

Preparing before you go

  1. Get the recipient to send their account details as a screenshot from their banking app.
  2. For a wire, ask the Nigerian bank for its SWIFT code and any intermediary bank it uses, in writing.
  3. Decide whether the recipient needs naira or dollars, and ask the Nigerian bank how it will credit an incoming wire.
  4. Check your daily card or account limits if you will pay by card or from your account.
  5. Take the reference number home and send it to the recipient separately from the account details.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Paying at a counter without reading the printed disclosure first.
  • Choosing a bank with a similar name because the right one is not on the list.
  • Sending a wire without asking the Nigerian bank how it will credit it.
  • Handing the reference number to anyone other than the recipient.
  • Paying someone who offers a better rate outside a licensed company; if it goes wrong you have no federal remittance rights.

Checking an Illinois licence

Money transmitters need a licence in each state where they serve customers. We could not open the Illinois regulator's own page when writing this, so use the two checks that work in every state:

  1. Search the company's NMLS number on NMLS Consumer Access, the free lookup CSBS describes for state-licensed money services businesses, and look for Illinois among its state licences.
  2. Read your receipt. 12 CFR 1005.31 requires it to give the name, phone number and website of the state agency that licenses the provider, plus the CFPB's details. That tells you which Illinois body to contact if something goes wrong.

At a counter, the shop is normally the agent and the transfer company is the licensee, so check the company. See what a money transmitter licence means for your transfer.

Nigerian services in Chicago

NIBSS lists a diaspora BVN enrolment centre in Chicago at 7128 North Ridge Boulevard. Its page, modified 25 June 2026, shows a fee of $45 at most centres; check the current fee when you book.

Where Pryme fits

If you prefer not to queue, a Pryme Personal account can be opened in the app from Chicago. It holds USD and NGN in your own name, and Send shows the rate and the fee before you approve. See how it works.

Questions people ask

Where can I send money to Nigeria in person in Chicago?

At a Western Union or MoneyGram agent, which both companies say accept cash, or at your own bank's branch by international wire. Use each company's location finder for agents.

Is a bank wire or an agent better for large amounts?

Compare the naira that will arrive. A wire has a fixed fee, such as Bank of America's $45 for an outgoing international USD wire, while an agent's cost sits in its fee and rate.

How do I check a transfer company is licensed in Illinois?

Search its NMLS number on NMLS Consumer Access and look for Illinois. Your receipt must also name the state agency that licenses it.

Can I do my BVN in Chicago?

NIBSS lists a diaspora BVN enrolment centre at 7128 North Ridge Boulevard, Chicago. Book through its diaspora page.
