Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Selling Nigerian food on Etsy or Shopify: compliance

Homemade or imported: how FDA labelling, state cottage food laws and sales tax apply when you sell Nigerian food on Etsy or your own Shopify store.

The short answer

Which rules apply depends on where the food is made. Packaged Nigerian food you import and resell must meet FDA rules: a registered foreign facility, prior notice and a full English label. Food you make at home falls under your state's cottage food law; in Texas that covers non-perishable foods sold directly to consumers, with a $50,000 annual sales cap in the 2019 text. On your own Shopify store, sales tax registration is yours.

Start with one question: who made the food?

Online platforms make it easy to list chin chin, puff-puff mix, pepper blends or dried fish. Whether you can legally sell them depends less on the platform and more on where the food was made and how it reaches the customer. There are three common situations:

SituationMain rules
Imported packaged food from a Nigerian factoryFDA facility registration, prior notice, FDA labelling, import alerts
Food made in your US home kitchenState cottage food law, or a licensed commercial kitchen if outside its scope
Food made in a US commercial kitchen you rent or ownState and local food permits; FDA registration for the facility unless exempt

Imported packaged food

If you buy packaged Nigerian food and resell it, the FDA rules that apply to any importer apply to you. The Nigerian manufacturer's facility must be registered with the FDA (21 CFR Part 1 Subpart H), each shipment needs prior notice before arrival, and the label must meet the FDA Food Labeling Guide: identity, net quantity in metric and US units, ingredients by weight, the responsible firm's name and address, and usually Nutrition Facts. If any other language appears on the label, all required statements must also appear in English.

The labelling guide includes a small-business exemption from Nutrition Facts, but it is lost if the label or advertising makes a nutrition claim. On a product page, a line such as "high in protein" counts. Check the exemption conditions before relying on it. For product-specific guidance, see pepper and suya spice rules and Nutrition Facts for Nigerian foods.

Food made at home: cottage food laws

Each state sets its own cottage food rules. Texas is a useful example because many Nigerians live there. Texas Health and Safety Code section 437.001, as amended in 2019, defines a cottage food production operation as an individual working from their primary residence, producing foods that do not need time or temperature control for safety, such as baked goods, candy, nuts, jams, dried produce, popcorn, pickles, roasted coffee and dry tea, dried herbs and fermented vegetables. Annual gross income must be $50,000 or less in that text, and the operation sells directly to consumers, delivering at the point of sale or to a place the consumer chooses.

  • Chin chin, plantain chips and dry pepper blends may fit a non-perishable category; check each product.
  • Moi moi, stews, jollof and anything needing refrigeration do not fit and need a licensed kitchen and permits.
  • Selling wholesale to a shop is outside the "directly to consumers" model.
  • Shipping across state lines raises questions the Texas definition does not answer; check with the state health department before shipping out of state.

The $50,000 figure comes from the 2019 statute text; the Texas limit may have changed since, so confirm the current figure with the Texas Department of State Health Services. Other states have different lists, caps and rules on online sales. For a licensed route, see starting a Nigerian catering business at home in Texas.

Platform rules and sales tax

Etsy and Shopify each have their own policies on food, which can be stricter than the law; read the current prohibited-items and food policies on the platform before listing. For sales tax, the difference matters. On a marketplace, the marketplace provider often collects tax for you; the Texas Comptroller says marketplace-only sellers whose provider certifies that it collects need no Texas permit, but must keep records for four years. On your own Shopify store, you are the seller and registration and collection in your state are your responsibility.

Worked example (illustration only)

Example: a Houston baker sells chin chin on her own Shopify site and imported Nigerian pepper soup spice alongside it. The chin chin, baked at home and delivered locally, can fall under Texas cottage food rules. The imported spice is a different matter: it needs a registered Nigerian processor, prior notice on import and a full FDA label. She collects Texas sales tax on taxable items through her own store because she is the seller.

Records to keep

  • For imported food: the supplier's FDA registration number, prior notice confirmations and a copy of each label version.
  • For home-made food: your recipes and ingredient lists, so that allergen statements stay accurate when a recipe changes.
  • Sales by channel and by state, for sales tax and, in Texas, to show you stay within the cottage food income limit.
  • Customer complaints and how you resolved them.

Good records also make it easier to move up to a licensed kitchen or wholesale customers later.

Where Pryme fits

A food seller buying Nigerian ingredients often pays suppliers at home in naira. A Pryme Business Account opened from the US holds USD and NGN with local details; Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve, and invoicing helps with wholesale customers.

Questions people ask

Can I sell homemade Nigerian food on Etsy?

Only if your state's cottage food law covers the product and the way you sell it, and Etsy's own food policy allows it. Foods needing refrigeration generally need a licensed kitchen.

Is jollof rice a cottage food in Texas?

No. It needs time and temperature control, so it falls outside the Texas cottage food definition.

Do imported Nigerian snacks need Nutrition Facts?

Usually yes. A small-business exemption exists but is lost if the label or advertising makes a nutrition claim.

Who collects sales tax on Shopify?

On your own Shopify store, you are the seller, so registering and collecting in your state is your responsibility.
