Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Importing Nigerian spices: pepper and suya spice rules

Pepper, suya spice and other Nigerian spices face FDA import alerts for Salmonella, colours and heavy metals. Testing, labels and the peanut problem.

The short answer

Nigerian spices, dried pepper and suya spice (yaji) can be imported for sale in the US if the producer is registered with the FDA, each shipment has prior notice and the pack has a compliant English label. The main risks are Salmonella, illegal colours, heavy metals and mycotoxins, all covered by FDA import alerts that apply to Nigeria, and suya spice usually contains groundnut, which must be declared as peanuts.

Why spices draw attention

Spices are dried, ground and often handled in the open, which is why regulators test them closely. Of the 14 FDA import alerts that apply to Nigeria (as at 21 October 2026), several match spice risks directly:

AlertSubjectSpice risk
99-19food products with Salmonellaground pepper, spice blends dried in the open
45-02foods with illegal or undeclared coloursred pepper and spice blends
99-42foods with heavy metals (toxic elements)ground spices and blends
23-14food products with mycotoxinsgroundnut in suya spice, chilli stored damp
99-46imported human foods with filthinsects, stones, foreign matter
99-39imported food that appears misbrandedlabels missing required information

Import alerts let FDA officers detain matching shipments without examining them, so the importer has to prove the goods are safe. See what FDA import alerts mean.

Suya spice and the peanut issue

Suya spice, or yaji, is commonly made with roasted groundnut, ground with chilli, ginger and other spices. Groundnut is peanut, one of the FDA's nine major food allergens. Every pack must declare it, either in the ingredient list ("peanuts") or in a "Contains: peanuts" statement next to it. An undeclared allergen is one of the reasons the FDA gives for refusing imported foods and placing them on import alert. If your supplier adds seasoning cubes, check those too: some contain wheat or soy.

Groundnut also brings an aflatoxin risk. The UK's National Monitoring Plan for 2026/27 lists suya mix (peanut powder) from Nigeria as a high priority for aflatoxin sampling. That is a UK plan, not a US rule, but it shows what regulators test this product for, and US alert 23-14 on mycotoxins applies to Nigeria.

The basic FDA requirements

  1. Registered producer: the facility that grinds, blends or packs the spice must hold an FDA food facility registration; the rules are in FDA rules for Nigerian foodstuff.
  2. Prior notice for every shipment, confirmed before arrival; see how to file FDA prior notice.
  3. Label: common name on the front ("suya spice blend", "ground dried chilli pepper"), net weight in metric and US units, ingredients in descending order by weight, allergens, distributor name and address, Nutrition Facts unless exempt, and "Product of Nigeria".

Testing before you ship

No FDA rule requires a laboratory certificate for every spice lot. But with alerts for Salmonella, colours, heavy metals and mycotoxins already applying to Nigeria, lab results are the evidence that gets a held shipment released. Ask the producer for results matched to your lot:

  • Salmonella, for any ground spice or blend;
  • non-permitted colours, for pepper and red blends;
  • lead and other heavy metals, for ground spices;
  • aflatoxins, for anything with groundnut.

Example: deciding whether to test

Example: an order of 400 kg of suya spice costs $2,400 from the producer. A private laboratory quotes, say, $500 for Salmonella, aflatoxin and colour tests on one composite sample. That adds about 21 percent to the cost of this small order, but a held shipment can cost more than the goods in storage and broker fees. On larger orders the testing cost per kilogram falls quickly: on 2,000 kg costing $12,000, the same $500 adds about 4 percent.

Spices in your luggage

Small amounts of pepper or yaji for your own kitchen are a different matter. CBP says travellers must declare all plant products, and an agriculture specialist decides whether they enter; civil penalties for failing to declare can reach $1,000 for a first non-commercial offence. Food for personal use that travels with you is excluded from FDA prior notice. Spices you bring in a suitcase to sell are not, and need a confirmed notice. See bringing egusi, ogbono and crayfish.

What to check first

  1. Is the grinding and packing facility registered with the FDA?
  2. Does the full recipe list every ingredient, including groundnut and seasoning cubes?
  3. Will the producer provide recent lab results for your lot?
  4. Is the label printed for the US market?
  5. Has your broker agreed to file prior notice?

Where Pryme fits

Spice producers are often small family businesses paid in naira. A Pryme Business Account opened from the US holds NGN and USD with local details; Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve, and a verifiable receipt records each payment against the lot. See business multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Can I import suya spice to the US?

Yes, if the producer is registered with the FDA, prior notice is filed and the label declares peanuts and meets FDA labelling rules.

Why are Nigerian spices detained by FDA?

Import alerts for Salmonella, illegal colours, heavy metals and mycotoxins apply to Nigeria, so matching products can be detained without examination.

Does yaji have to say it contains peanuts?

Yes, if it contains groundnut. Peanut is a major food allergen and must be declared on the label.

Do I need lab tests to import pepper from Nigeria?

There is no blanket requirement, but recent results for Salmonella, colours and heavy metals are what you would need if a shipment is held.
