Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Selling Nigerian black soap in the US: FDA labelling

Black soap can be true soap, a cosmetic or a drug in the US, depending on what it is made of and what you claim. How to label each one.

The short answer

Under US rules, black soap is regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission if it is true soap (mostly alkali salts of fatty acids) and is labelled and sold only as soap. If you sell it to moisturise or perfume skin it is a cosmetic under the FDA, and if you claim it clears acne, eczema or bacteria it is a drug. Your label and your claims decide which.

Three possible categories

African black soap, ose dudu in Yoruba, is commonly described as made from the ash of plantain skins, cocoa pods or palm leaves mixed with oils such as palm kernel oil and shea butter. Ash and oil in that kind of recipe is how soap is made in the chemical sense. But US law does not classify a product by chemistry alone. It looks at two things: what the product is mostly made of, and what you say it does.

The FDA definition is in 21 CFR 701.20. A product is "soap" only if both of these are true:

  1. the bulk of its nonvolatile matter is an alkali salt of fatty acids, and its cleansing comes from those compounds; and
  2. it is labelled, sold and represented only as soap.

The FDA explains that true soap meeting this definition is regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, not the FDA. Body cleansers that do not meet the definition are cosmetics. And a product intended to treat or prevent disease, or to affect the body, is a drug, whatever it is called.

How you sell itCategoryRegulator
"Black soap", cleansing only, traditional saponified recipetrue soapCPSC
"Moisturising black soap with shea and fragrance"cosmeticFDA
Liquid "black soap" made mainly from synthetic detergentscosmetic, even if labelled soapFDA
"Clears acne, fades dark spots, cures eczema, antibacterial"drug, or drug and cosmeticFDA

Why claims matter most

Online shops for black soap often repeat what market sellers say: it clears acne, treats eczema, removes dark spots, kills bacteria. The FDA gives antibacterial cleansers and acne cleansers as examples of products that are drugs or both drugs and cosmetics. It also notes that a soap-like cleanser with claims such as moisturising or deodorising is a cosmetic, not a true soap, because true soap must be represented only as soap.

So the same bar from the same supplier in Abeokuta can be three different products in law, depending on your label and your Instagram captions. If you want the simplest route, sell a traditional bar as soap, for cleansing, and nothing more.

Labelling each category

True soap

FDA cosmetic labelling rules do not apply to true soap, since the CPSC regulates it. CPSC rules on consumer product labelling are outside the scope of the sources we checked, so ask your broker or an adviser what applies to your product.

Cosmetic black soap

A black soap sold as a cosmetic must follow the FDA's cosmetic rules. Section 701.20 gives one concrete example: a bar must carry an accurate statement of weight in avoirdupois pounds and ounces, displayed prominently. For cosmetics, MoCRA also applies: the manufacturing facility registers and renews every two years, the responsible person named on the label lists the product and its ingredients and updates the listing yearly, keeps safety records, and reports serious adverse events within 15 business days, unless a small business exemption applies.

Drug and cosmetic black soap

Where a product is both, the FDA says the label follows the combined over-the-counter drug and cosmetic format: drug ingredients listed as "Active Ingredients" in alphabetical order, then cosmetic ingredients as "Inactive Ingredients" in order of predominance. Drug status also brings drug rules. A Nigerian black soap sold with acne claims is unlikely to meet them without considerable work.

Practical checklist

  1. Ask the supplier how the soap is made and what is in it. A traditional saponified bar is a candidate for true soap; a liquid blend may be a cosmetic.
  2. Write a label and product description that make only the claims you intend.
  3. Remove disease, acne, eczema and antibacterial claims unless you are prepared for drug rules.
  4. For cosmetics, show net weight in pounds and ounces, and check MoCRA registration and listing.
  5. Keep your social media consistent with the label; the FDA counts promotional material when judging intended use.

For shea butter, which is almost always a cosmetic, see importing shea butter. For how alerts lead to detention, see FDA import alerts.

Where Pryme fits

Selling to boutiques and salons means invoices and steady supplier payments. A Pryme Business Account opened from the US holds USD and NGN with local details, invoicing handles your US customers, and Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve a payment to the soap maker in naira. See verifiable receipts for proof of what you paid.

Questions people ask

Is black soap regulated by the FDA?

Only if it is a cosmetic or a drug. True soap, mainly alkali salts of fatty acids and sold only as soap, is regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Can I say black soap clears acne?

That makes it a drug, or a drug and cosmetic, in the FDA's view. Acne cleansers are one of the FDA's own examples.

Does black soap need an ingredient list in the US?

If it is a cosmetic or drug, FDA labelling rules apply. If it is true soap, FDA cosmetic rules do not apply and CPSC rules govern.

Do I need to register black soap under MoCRA?

Only if it is a cosmetic, and not if a small business exemption applies. True soap is outside the FDA's cosmetic rules.
