Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Saving for a house deposit while sending money home

How to split income between a deposit abroad and family support, use LISA or FHSA bonuses, and avoid deposit sources lenders reject.

The short answer

Treat the deposit and family support as two fixed monthly lines, set the family amount first at a level you can sustain, and push the deposit savings into a tax-advantaged account where you qualify, such as a UK Lifetime ISA (25% bonus, up to £1,000 a year) or a Canadian FHSA ($8,000 a year, $40,000 lifetime). Keep deposit money in a traceable bank account, because lenders check where it came from and some refuse money from community savings schemes.

Many Nigerians abroad reach the same point a few years in: rent is high, a mortgage would cost less each month, but the deposit feels impossible while money goes home every month. Both goals can move forward together if you plan them as separate commitments rather than letting one eat whatever the other leaves.

Set both amounts, then protect them

Start from your take-home pay and fixed costs. From what is left, decide a family figure you can keep up for at least two or three years (our guide on how much of your income to send home sets out a working rule). Then fix a deposit figure. Both leave your account on payday, by standing order, before discretionary spending starts. A deposit that is saved from "whatever is left" rarely grows.

A worked example

Example only. Tunde wants a 10% deposit on a £250,000 home in England: £25,000. He pays £333 a month into a Lifetime ISA (£4,000 a year), which attracts a 25% government bonus of £1,000 a year. After three years he has £12,000 of his own money plus £3,000 of bonus, £15,000 in total, before any interest. The remaining £10,000 comes from about £278 a month into ordinary savings over the same 36 months. His total deposit saving is about £611 a month, and he keeps sending £300 home.

LineMonthly (example)After 3 years
Lifetime ISA contributions£333£12,000
LISA bonus (25%)-£3,000
Ordinary savings£278£10,000
Deposit total£611£25,000
Family support£300-

Use the schemes you qualify for

UK: Lifetime ISA

GOV.UK says you can open a Lifetime ISA if you are 18 or over but under 40, and you must be UK resident to open it and keep paying in. You can save up to £4,000 a year until 50, within the overall £20,000 ISA allowance, and get a 25% bonus of up to £1,000 a year. A penalty-free withdrawal for a first home requires a property costing £450,000 or less, bought at least 12 months after your first payment, with a mortgage, with the money paid to your conveyancer. Other withdrawals face a 25% charge, which takes back more than the bonus.

Canada: First Home Savings Account

The CRA allows an FHSA for residents of Canada aged 18 (19 in some provinces) to 71 who are first-time buyers, with $8,000 of room a year and a $40,000 lifetime limit. Contributions are generally tax-deductible and a qualifying withdrawal to buy a home in Canada is tax-free. Other countries have their own schemes; check the official tax authority page before you rely on one.

The first-time buyer trap for people who own land in Nigeria

Many diaspora savers already own a plot or a flat at home. That can matter. For UK Stamp Duty first-time buyer relief, HMRC's manual (SDLTM29845) says a buyer must never have held a major interest in a dwelling "anywhere in the world", including through inheritance or gift. Canada's FHSA uses its own test: not having lived, in the current or previous four calendar years, in a home you or your spouse owned as your principal residence. The rules differ, so check each definition against what you own in Nigeria before counting on a relief.

Where lenders will and will not accept the money from

Lenders check the source of every part of a deposit. Nationwide's intermediary criteria are a useful example of how detailed this gets:

  • Savings held outside the UK and EEA need three months of statements plus a UK statement showing the transfer.
  • A gift from a donor outside the EEA needs a gifted deposit form and six months of the donor's bank statements.
  • Money from "community saving plans" is listed as unacceptable, as are crypto, credit cards and gifts from overseas companies.

The last point matters for anyone who has been saving through an ajo or esusu. Move your deposit savings into a bank or building society account in your own name well before you apply, so the trail is clear. If family in Nigeria are helping, read gifted deposits from parents in Nigeria, and for visa-related lending rules, your first mortgage abroad on a visa.

When family needs spike

A hospital bill or school fees will arrive mid-plan. Decide in advance which pot pays: ideally an emergency fund, not the deposit. If you do pause deposit saving, pause it for a set number of months and write down the restart date. Pausing a Lifetime ISA is usually better than withdrawing from it, because of the 25% charge.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account lets you keep your family allowance in a separate currency balance from your own savings, and send to Nigeria with Send; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. If family hold naira in Nigeria for their own goals, Savings Boxes are available for naira held there (Boxes). Statements can be generated as verifiable documents through VerifyDoc.ai, which helps when a lender asks for a clear record.

Questions people ask

Can I use a Lifetime ISA if I own land in Nigeria?

The LISA first-home rules and Stamp Duty relief use first-time buyer tests; HMRC's Stamp Duty test covers property anywhere in the world. Check the LISA provider's rules and HMRC's definition before relying on either.

Will UK lenders accept ajo money as a deposit?

Some lenders list community saving plans as unacceptable. Move the money into a bank account in your name well before applying.

How much deposit do I need as a migrant?

It depends on the lender and your visa. Many ask for more than the minimum from people on time-limited visas.

Can my parents in Nigeria give me money for a deposit?

Often yes, with a gifted deposit form and the donor's bank statements; Nationwide asks for six months of statements from donors outside the EEA.
