Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Secured credit cards for newcomers: how they work

You pay a deposit, it sets your limit, and your payments build a credit file. How secured cards work, what to ask before applying, and the traps to avoid.

The short answer

A secured credit card is a real credit card backed by a cash deposit you pay up front; the deposit usually sets your credit limit, which the CFPB says is often around $50 to $300. You spend and repay as with any card, and if the issuer reports to the credit bureaus, those on-time payments start your credit file. Before applying, ask whether it reports to all bureaus, what the fees are, and whether it can later move you to an unsecured card.

How a secured card works

The lender takes almost no risk, because your deposit covers the limit. That is why secured cards are one of the few products open to people with no local credit history. The CFPB's checklist for people with no credit file describes it this way: you pay a deposit, often about $50 to $300, which sets your line of credit. The CFPB's general guidance gives an example of a $500 deposit, where you can spend up to that amount and paying the bill restores what you can spend.

  1. You apply and pay the deposit.
  2. The issuer sets your limit, usually equal to the deposit.
  3. You use the card and receive a monthly statement.
  4. You repay, in full or at least the minimum, by the due date.
  5. The issuer reports the account and your payments to the bureaus.
  6. After a period of good use, some issuers return the deposit and move you to an unsecured card.

The deposit is not used to pay your bill. If you miss payments, the account is reported as late like any other card, while the deposit sits as security against the account; the card agreement says when it can be used.

Secured cards around the world

Secured cards are most common in the US and Canada. In the UK, the usual starter product is a credit-builder card, which is normally unsecured; Experian UK says these usually have low limits and high interest rates. The habits that make them work are the same everywhere.

Secured, prepaid and debit cards are not the same

CardWhose moneyBuilds a credit file?
Secured credit cardThe issuer's credit, backed by your depositYes, if the issuer reports
Prepaid cardYour money loaded in advanceGenerally no; there is no borrowing to report
Debit cardYour money in a current accountGenerally no; the account may show on some files, but the spending is not borrowing

The difference matters because some products marketed to newcomers look like credit cards but are prepaid. If there is no credit limit and no monthly statement with a minimum payment, it is probably not building your credit file. Ask the issuer directly whether the account is reported as credit.

What to ask before you apply

QuestionWhy it matters
Does it report to all the main bureaus?A card that does not report does nothing for your file. The CFPB says to ask
What are the fees?Annual or monthly fees reduce what the deposit is worth to you
What is the interest rate?Matters only if you carry a balance; aim never to
Can it graduate to an unsecured card, and when? The CFPB notes some cards move you on; this returns your deposit
How and when is the deposit returned? On closing or upgrading; get it in writing
Is there a foreign transaction fee?Relevant if you use it on trips home

Pitfalls to avoid

  • High use. The CFPB suggests using no more than 30% of your limit. On a $300 limit that is about $90 a month.
  • Paying for transfers home with the card. Card issuers can treat money transfers as cash advances, with a separate fee and interest from day one; Asda Money's guide says credit card cash advance fees are usually 2% to 3%. See card-funded transfers and cash advance fees.
  • Foreign spending. The same guide puts typical foreign transaction fees at 2.75% to 2.99%.
  • Applying for several at once. Each application is usually a hard search; space them out.
  • Cancelling too soon. Closing your only card shortens your history. Upgrade instead where you can.

Worked example

Example only. You pay a $300 deposit and get a $300 limit. Each month you put a $60 phone bill on the card (20% of the limit) and repay the full statement by direct debit, so you pay no interest. Over 12 months you spend $720 on the phone bill, all repaid. If the card has a $35 annual fee, the year's cost of building your file is $35, and the $300 deposit comes back when you close or upgrade the account.

For the wider plan, see building credit from zero, and if you were refused even a secured card, what to do after a failed credit check.

When to move on

A secured card is a starting point, not a destination. Once you have several months of on-time payments, ask the issuer whether it reviews accounts for an upgrade, and run an eligibility check for an unsecured card before applying. Keep the oldest card open if it has no annual fee, because the age of your accounts counts in your favour.

Where Pryme fits

Keeping family transfers off your new card protects your utilisation. Money for home can go from a Pryme account opened from abroad with Send, with the rate and fee shown before you approve.

Questions people ask

Do secured credit cards build credit?

Yes, if the issuer reports to the credit bureaus and you pay on time. Ask the issuer which bureaus it reports to before applying.

Do I get my secured card deposit back?

Usually, when you close the account with nothing owed or the issuer moves you to an unsecured card. Check the terms in writing.

How much deposit do I need for a secured card?

The CFPB says deposits are often around $50 to $300, and the deposit usually sets your limit.

Can I use a secured card to send money to Nigeria?

It is usually a costly way to send money, because issuers can treat transfers as cash advances with an extra fee and immediate interest.
