Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Roth IRA for Nigerian immigrants: who can open one

Citizenship is not the test. Earned income and your tax-return income are. The 2026 limits, income ranges and the spousal rule, explained.

The short answer

You do not need to be a US citizen to fund a Roth IRA. The IRS rules turn on taxable compensation and income: for 2026 you can put in up to $7,500 ($8,600 at 50 or over), never more than you earned, and the amount phases out between $153,000 and $168,000 of modified AGI for single filers and $242,000 to $252,000 for joint filers.

What a Roth IRA is, in one paragraph

A Roth IRA is an individual retirement account you open yourself at a bank, brokerage or other provider. You pay in money you have already paid tax on. The account then grows without further US tax, and qualifying withdrawals later in life come out tax-free. It is separate from any 401(k) at work, and you can have both.

The tests that decide whether you can contribute

None of the IRS pages on contribution limits asks about citizenship or visa type. The tests are about money:

  1. Taxable compensation. Your contribution for a year cannot be more than your taxable compensation for that year. A worker who earned $3,500 can put in $3,500, not $7,500 (IRS, IRA contribution limits, updated September 2026).
  2. The annual limit. For 2026 the combined limit across all your traditional and Roth IRAs is $7,500, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older (IRS release IR-2025-111, November 2025).
  3. Your income. Roth contributions shrink and then stop as modified adjusted gross income rises.
  4. No age limit. Since 2020 there is no upper age limit on regular contributions.
2026 filing statusRoth IRA phase-out range (modified AGI)
Single or head of household$153,000 to $168,000
Married filing jointly$242,000 to $252,000

Below the bottom of your range you can contribute the full limit. Inside it, a reduced amount. Above it, nothing directly.

Where immigration status does come in

Tax residency

Your visa does not appear in the IRA rules, but your tax status shapes your return and what counts as taxable compensation. A new arrival may be a nonresident alien for part or all of a year. If that applies to you, have the year checked before contributing; our guides to the substantial presence test and the dual-status year explain the terms.

Identification

Federal rules require a bank to collect your name, date of birth, address and an identification number before opening any account. For a non-US person that number can be a taxpayer identification number, a passport number and country of issue, or an alien identification card number (31 CFR 1020.220). In practice most IRA providers ask for an SSN or ITIN because the account reports to the IRS, so have one ready; a Nigerian passport alone may not be accepted by every provider.

The spousal rule many families miss

If one of you works and the other does not, the IRS lets you contribute for the non-earning spouse on a joint return. Each spouse can put in up to the limit, as long as the total does not exceed the taxable compensation shown on the joint return. A couple where one partner arrived on a dependent visa and has no US wages can still build two accounts this way.

Worked example

Example only. Tunde earns $62,000 in Atlanta in 2026; his wife Kemi has no US earnings. They file jointly with modified AGI well below $242,000. Together they can contribute $15,000 ($7,500 each), because their combined compensation of $62,000 covers it. If Tunde earned only $9,000 that year, their combined contributions would be capped at $9,000.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Contributing more than you earned. Excess contributions are taxed at 6% a year for each year they stay in the account, unless you withdraw the excess and its earnings by the return due date, including extensions.
  • Forgetting the income test. A pay rise or a spouse's income can push a joint return into the phase-out range.
  • Assuming a move home closes the account. Moving back to Nigeria does not end an IRA, but check whether your provider keeps servicing customers with a foreign address. Our guide on taking a 401(k) home covers the withdrawal side.

Roth or traditional IRA?

The same $7,500 limit is shared between both types, so the choice is about when you pay tax. A Roth suits someone who expects their tax rate to be the same or higher later, or who values tax-free withdrawals in retirement. A traditional IRA may give a deduction now, but for 2026 that deduction phases out for single filers covered by a workplace plan between $81,000 and $91,000 of modified AGI, and for joint filers where the contributing spouse is covered between $129,000 and $149,000 (IRS, November 2025).

For many Nigerian households in the US, a practical consideration is the possibility of moving home. Roth money has already been taxed in the US, and qualifying withdrawals are tax-free there, which can make it simpler to plan around than a traditional account whose withdrawals are taxed when they come out. How Nigeria would treat either one if you become resident there is a separate question for a Nigerian tax adviser.

Whichever you choose, the account is yours, not your employer's, so changing jobs or states does not affect it. That makes an IRA a useful home for retirement saving if you expect to move between cities, which many new arrivals do in their first few years.

Steps to open one

  1. Confirm you have taxable compensation this year.
  2. Estimate your modified AGI against the range for your filing status.
  3. Get your SSN or ITIN ready, plus ID and a US address.
  4. Choose a provider and open a Roth IRA (not a traditional IRA by mistake).
  5. Set a monthly amount you can keep up.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer IRAs. Where it helps is the rest of the budget: the Personal Assistant can set reminders for regular saving and prepare transfers you approve, and money you send to family can go through Pryme Send, with the rate and fee shown before you approve.

Questions people ask

Can a green card holder open a Roth IRA?

Yes. The IRS tests are taxable compensation and income, not citizenship. For 2026 the limit is $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 or over.

Can I open a Roth IRA on an H-1B or F-1 visa?

The IRA rules do not mention visas. What matters is whether you have taxable compensation and how your tax status is treated that year, so check the year with a tax preparer first.

Do I need an SSN to open a Roth IRA?

Federal ID rules allow other identifiers for non-US persons, but most IRA providers ask for an SSN or ITIN. Ask the provider before applying.

Can my wife contribute to a Roth IRA if she does not work?

Yes, on a joint return, as long as your combined contributions do not exceed the taxable compensation on the return.
